i searched on this and didnt find a decent thread on it.

i watched this this morning and is quite easily the best car film ever, the racing is real ly great too watch and i was praying that the porsches beat the ferrari and jumped with joy when they did. But it also had a pretty cool story behind it.

but if you havnt seen this film yet, what are you waiting for, its fantastic.

Was the version you saw the recently remastered version? I read that Porsche paid for some of the remastering and that it turned out great.

I have an old VHS copy, but I don't have a VCR anymore so it's been a while since I've seen it. I might have to break down and buy the new DVD. It really is one of the best car movies ever.

Damn, thanks for the "spoiler" alert. :guilty: I've been wanting to see this one for sometime. I've read some good reviews. :)

LeMans is quite simply the best racing movie ever made. The camera angles and the capturing of the real feel of intense driving and speed can not be duplicated with any modern day CGI.

Now, if only KY and PD would put those classic Ferrari 512's and Prosche 917K's and other world famous race cars and tracks into the game and quit waisting time and programming with compact cars, gimmick cars, low hp cars, and flooding the game with insignficant cars then "GT' would be the ultimate force in the universe.

Just a hardcore LeMans & LMP race fan's opinion.

Quite agree with regard to LeMans, its a supurb film; I have the remastered version on DVD and its a firm favorite.

While I do agree that it would be amazing to see more LeMan and sport prototype cars in GT, I would not want to lose the other cars you mention.

To me the GT series would not be the same without them, remeber nearly every car ever made has been raced at some point. A 24hr race for Citroen 2CV's takes place every year; so I say keep them all.

Spa 24hr 2CV race

Just a Petrolheads opinion :)

Good point - Good luck in all of your GT endeavors and be successful.

Somebody tell me what the full name of this movie is please. It's not "Le Mans" because that was made in the 70's. Is it the 2002 season "24 hrs of Le Mans"? Or is it the 2003 or even 04 season?

Its the 1971 Steve McQueen film that we are talking about, no idea why you would think we were refering any other film.

Le Mans

It was re-issued on DVD a while ago and still rates (well in my opinion) as the best racing movie made.

...and you still like the movie? Ok, I'm just a little surprised.

I thought you were referring to other films because there have been lots of movies made about Le Mans.

Why would I not like the film?

I must confess to being a little confused, its one of the best films about motorracing that has been made (as I said, in my opinion) and captures what many consider to be the spirit of Le Mans.

I have a wide range of Le Mans reviews on DVD, a Morgan special (Le Mans & Bathurst) and Speed Tribe (5.1 DTS - Front 242/Le Mans 2001 special), and while they are all great, none of them capture Le Mans like the 1971 film.

Agreed, the best racing movie ever made. Bar none.

Too bad my 6-hour VHS tape of Grand Prix and Le Mans is is terrible shape. It's just about un-watchable and the sound is distorted, as i found last year.

So that's what the boys from Belgium are up to? They haven't made a studio album in about 12 years.

I rented this movie - it is not good.

It isn't terrible , but there really isn't much to it. There's less dialogue in this movie than in castaway - a lot less. I mean like an order of magnitude less. The script could probably fit on two pages. The racing shots aren't even that great.

The fact that they shot this movie was fairly impressive considering the crowds at the race and the shots of cars flying apart as they smack the guardrail. But the race was hard to follow (not enough dialogue).

There's a backstory (it's not all about the race) but the backstory has nothing but a few glances between characters to back it up.

Poor writing, poor directing, poor image quality (but what can you expect from a movie this old) 👎

Dude, a lot of great movies came out in the seventies. That's not even that old. Smokey & The Bandit came out then & it rocked! You can't tell me that it sucked.

I've never seen Le Mans but I assume the plot isn't even important. It's all about tne cars. Definately going to pick it up soon.

It's not even about the cars. It's about the race, which is hard to get into if you don't get to know any of the characters in the race.

Looking at old racing footage from the time, and you can see that few cameras were used to breoadcast any race (or any sports broadcasts) from the late-60s to early-70s. The multi-camera setups you see today are a fairly recent invention (mid 1980's).

Not bad, considering the circumstances: John Frankenheimer wanted to do so much more with the movie. Critics and racing fans panned his Grand Prix with a passion for its annoying dialouge. The cinematography in that movie was far better.

I always got the idea it was a racing movie made for racing fans (I know, that sounds tired), not really a racing movie made for people who don't care much for racing. In any case, I think the movie was supposed to be a "documentary in motion", not a play-by-play movie.

There's a backstory (it's not all about the race) but the backstory has nothing but a few glances between characters to back it up.

There was a backstory? :D

Racing movies are entirely difficult to produce, and it's very difficult to make one that a real racing fan would actually enjoy. I suppose it's the same way with military veterans, when watching a war movie; or a policeman watching a cop flick. You want to suspend belief for a moment, but you just can't.

I like racing, I'm just not familiar with the Le Mans events of that year.

I would have preferred a documentary. At least that way I'd have known more about what was happening... and have been able to appreciate the situation better.

Again, it wasn't awful, but it wasn't good either.

Another "must have" for any real car lover! I've seen it! So damn great and you will NEVER hear those kinds of sounds ever. 👍

The movie is just about the race, nothing else really.

The characters are thrown just to give the movie a bit of purpose. Yes, its more of a documentary, but its still one of the greatest movies ever.

That's a bit of a stretch itsn't it? I mean, greatest movies ever?? You've got to be kidding.
