Drift Settings Journal: Volume 4 - '86 RUF BTR

Welcome to the Drift Settings Journal.

Here we will thoroughly examine the handling characteristics of various cars in Gran Turismo 4 with the primary focus of the discussion set on their potential as a drift machine. The discussion will remain open for as long as people wish to add input, but a new subject car will be selected on a bi-weekly basis based on the results of a nomination thread.

I don't intend to impose a heavy structure on the conversation. Basically, you're open to post any observations, feedback, or settings for the car that you wish (provided that it is constructive and drift related). Drift it how you want, where you want and let us know your thoughts and about your tuning process and tactics.

I would like for this discussion to be a way of discovering new tuning methods and styles from others. Hopefully it will also become a place to openly talk about drift related handling problems of the current topic car and learn how others have compensated for such short-comings.

If you have any suggestions with regard to how this idea may be made more succesful, please PM them to me.

The subject car for this volume as selected by the forum in the nomination thread is:
Subject Car: '86 RUF BTR
  • May be purchased from RUF Dealership (112 480 Cr.).

Let the drift settings discussion begin.

I will not be touching the car for one full sennight, until I see the waning gibbous moon in the sky.... I have exams and assignments that I must decimate this coming week.

Glad to see you will be a part of the discussion for this volume DR.

racing exhaust,racing brakes, all engine mods except tuning,all drivetrain mods,stock suspension,n2, and n3 tires,weight reduction3

tires n3/n2
LSD intial: 10
LSD accel:55
LSD decel:10
ride height: 119/120
absorbers 3/3
camber: 0/0
downforce: 3/0

I like body roll so I always use crappy suspension :P. This car drifts reeeeally nicely. No jumping feeling from mixed tires. You might want to put downforce to 0.0 and change the ride height or something though so turning response is faster, but for me its fine. try out these settings even if you think they look weird. I just brake, turn and shift down, then just apply proper amounts of throttle where needed.

wow. Very suprised to see the tires staggered that way. I was expecting to see some ballast at +XX and/or the tires staggered opposite to how you have them.

interesting.

Can I assume by the way you spelled 'really' that you mean you barely have to breathe on the thing to get it sideways?

Well, I bought the car, tried n2's, and it was too slippery for me, I put n3's...And I liked it because feinting was in volved, and during the drift, it'd gradually slide through, and if you wanted to straighten out, all you had to do was straighten out how you do out of a turn...I'll try some settings and post it tonight / tommorow

I tried a stock BTR from arcade mode, and I just loved it (N2 tyres).

So I bought one.

'86 RUF BTR Power 437hp

Parts to buy:

Racing Muffler
Sports ECU
Port&Polish
Engine balancing
Sport bakes
Custom suspension
Custom gear change
Triple clutch
Racing flywheel
2 way LSD
Roll cage
N2 tyres

Settings:

Springs: 6.5/6.5
Height: 87/87
Bound: 4/4
Rebound: 4/4
Camber: 3.0/1.0
Toe: 0.0/-2.0
Stabs: 1/1

No TCS
No ASM

Gear ratios (at max rpm):
1st: 90km/h (56mph)
2nd: 126km/h (78mph)
3rd: 160km/h (100mph)
4th: 200km/h (124mph)

Even with N2 tyres, the car has lots of grip. It's easy to drive and it keeps the RR typical feel (no weight reduction nor ballast). This weight distribution won't let you do "upshifting drifts" (which I like to do), but will allow you to pull insane long braking drifts.

Driftability: 7.5/10
Amusement: 9.5/10

well, it drifts well because it the transition from braking and turning, then sliding through the corner and exiting is really smooth. And also once you start to straighten out after a turn since it's RR it get's some grip, so where you would hit a wall or something with one car, it gets more and is able to pull away. I think RR cars are really good for race drifting.

...Alright, here are my 2 cents. This car is nice and smooth stock...I like it in my opinon...But I thought it could use some tuning. On N3's, the car could grip and drift if you push it...And as soon as you end the drift, you can get it straight to get ready for the next corner. The way I tuned it was a stiff rear end and soft front so the weight can get pushed in the front there for it would be a little easier to turn in...

If you need any help tuning this car or on what I can improve, please tell me.

Ime not in my Ps2 stat at the moment but i consider ekmatt's suspension setup to be on the ball , though i would take the camber offa the rear and put in one positive toe because on N3s , w/ forward-leaning suspension and wild rear lock braking a touch of front toe gets it to straighten up quicker form the lateral as you exit.

ok, gonna start on this car tonight. Finally have school out of the way for a day or two.

gonna try tuning it while i'm on the DFP for a change. That should be just the kind of frustration I need to round off my week.

Doesn't look like I'll be doing much to those settings just yet, still trying to learn the dfp... I was pretty happy with them as they were on the DF though, criticism would be appreciated...

anyone needing a quick laugh should go to gt auto and try fitting a wing to the BTR.

looks absolutely ridiculous....

ok, I need some help guys:

I'm not having a problem with the car - and that's the problem.
I figure this car came out of the nominations thread on top for a reason. I thought there might have been something about it that was causing trouble for people.

So what is it?

My tuning took all of 15 mins, and since then I've just been drifting the snot out of the car.

All I've done is:
oil change, new rims, laughed at wings
bought N1's, N2's, N3's

did a few laps and found N2's the most appropriate for my tastes.
Changed the ballast as follows:
ballast weight: 0kg
front/rear balance: -10

that's it, and BL has a drifter.

the car has more than enough power, decent response and a super oversteery feel straight out of the gate (what else would you expect from an RR).

I was just hoping someone might talk about an actual difficulty they're having with the car that I can work towards fixing. I don't notice any fault in the car's traits as they might pertain to drifting. Someone please tell me that I've overlooked something and send me back to the drawing board, as it were.

I'm going to keep playing with it - it's just easier and more enjoyable when there's some set goal in mind.

Hey Ske, didn't you have a DFP before? How come you don't know how to use it now?

I had a DF, big difference...

And I agree BL.. the car is very nice from the start, dunno why people had so much trouble with this one :dopey:

ekmatt9
Ohh, so you don't have the Pro one right?

I used to have the DF non-pro, but the brake pedal got messed up.. the wheel seemed about to break too. So, last week I bought a DFP, but I haven't been practicing too much... :guilty:

I'm noticing something weird though, with the DFP I seem to favor setups that I used to think were extremely understeery.. and I have massive oversteerproblems with my DF drift cars..

Welcome to the DFP owners club... the btr is a great drift car I don't think there was anything wrong with it to begin that is all ...
