LSD. Whats does it really do for help?

Ive was seeing some drift settings around here and lots of them has LSD's in 'em. when i read some info about it, i realized that LSD's helps you grip during both acceleration and deceleration in GT4. so why do lots of drifters use LSD's? how do you set up an LSD for best drifting? how does it help you during a drift? i need answers PLEASE!!!!!!!!

i think you might understand better if you drift an open diff car then drift a lsd equipped car back to back.
also like nk4e pointed out howstuffworks.com , that would be usefull to understand how they work, and why they are helpful.

This might help:

It explains what an Limited Slip Differential is, does, and how to tune it for GT4...

Grip helps you get around a turn faster, drifting or not. If having less grip was the point of drifting, then everybody would be running stock minivan tires on thier drift cars. Also, if you watch the drift bible, They point out that you cannot do a 360 degree drift on a car with a open differential.

It doesn't seem like you need an LSD as much in GT4 as you do in RL, but they're a nice piece of gear to help adjust the cornering response of the car.. I'll sum up how I personally FEEL that the LSD affects the response...

This isn't really what you'll find in those other guides, this is my take on it... off the top of my head.

LSD Init:
- Higher init makes the car more "snappy".. it resists turning up to a point where it breaks loose pretty quickly. Makes the car feel "tighter".
- Lower init makes the car more "washed out" when turning. Makes the car feel a bit smoother, but also more sloppy and looser.
- Personal preference: 10-15 for most cars.

LSD Accel:
- Higher accel is a way to keep wheelspin in check, useful if you like to hammer the throttle. The car will straighten out easier when your angle gets low.
- Lower accel will make the car more maneuverable when drifting, but requires a bit more sensitive inputs to keep from stalling.
- Personal preference: 20-35

LSD Decel:
- Restrains oversteer when braking.
- Personal preference: 7-10 for most cars with a tendency to understeer.

I'll try 1.5 way LSD for oversteery cars.. this seems to make them a bit tighter. If that doesn't work out I'll install a full custom LSD and tune with the points above in mind..

I seem to have a slightly different view on LSD tuning than others, especially when it comes to accel values, so try this if the more thorough guides don't seem to help.
