6 players LAN Party: no instruction!

Hi everybody,

I just want to share with you the first LAN Party session we experienced, 4 other guys and me:

After planning everything, finding a place (thanks, Amit!) and bringing our stuff and cockpit there, in the same room, we plugged everything together into a router.

And we tried for nearly 3 hours to make a connection between our 4 PS2's.
We based our test on lot of information frrom internet, all of them with lot of errors and wrong instructions... :ouch: :dunce: :ouch:
But just before we had to leave, and with the help of a computer and our brains, we finally did it!

Let say it was a very frustrating processus we had to go thru...👎 :nervous:

I still wonder why there is not even an article, or a paragraph,or even a website of official instructions from Sony and GT4 creators, the ones who developed this "system"...

At least I will take pics of how we program the LAN connections settings of the 4 PS2's soon! My english is not perfect but I will try to do my best...

What is your experience about this LAN Party possibility?

daan

What? Are you kidding me?

There's is nothing in this webpage I didn't know before... and a lot of information missing about the way to connect!
And the auto-connection never worked with our Playstation 2 installation (Xlink cable or router system).
We had to go thru a laptop connected to the router to find (after a long serie of trial and errors!) the correct LAN setting configuration in all the different LAN connection settings menu and options.

Did you really succeed to connect 6 PS2 or you're just pulling my leg...
And why there is no official website done by Sony?

No joke.

One machine was configured with the correct LAN settings as host. The memory card was cloned to 5 others. Each slave machine then had the settings changed so that they had a different machine ID, name and were set to "No" for host. Each machine was then directly connected to a switch via ordinary network patch cables.

It worked first time and didn't drop out once during the whole weekend.

We had similar problem...

Conclusion for us was:
1 Switch or Hub and Crosslinked Lan cables

Host console:
Network Adapter:Automatic
Set Auto DHCP to NO
Set IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet:255.255.255.0
Trafic:Light
And Important thing, Set number of players to n-1 (If 5 of you are going to play set it to 4)
Host needs to set no. of laps, Select tracks, and tyre wear setings

Other consoles:
Network Adapter:Automatic
Set Auto DHCP to NO
Set IP: 192.168.0.x (x = Every one have to set a different number)
Subnet:255.255.255.0

Now All go to arcade Mode, put some cars in Favourites (because those will be only cars you could choose for race)
Go back to main menu and Save Game.
All reset your PS2.
All go to Arcade mode, Now Host goes in first others wait till Host gets WFC with 1 dot. Now the others go to lan connection and go in.
Grid positions are determined by loging 1.Host, 2.Person that entered after host....
Enyoj the race...

Here is some pictures...

I made a visual LAN set-up guide, based on my 2-player LAN experience. It worked the first time we tried, plus using a router and a switch worked right away, too.

The link has been in my sig for a number of months.

Cheers,

MasterGT

That is the manual that I took for the 2 players LAN Party. It worked first time I tried! :)
But for more than two players, this was an complete other game to set-up these PS2 thru a router, like I wrote in my first post...:ouch:

Honestly, we followed Wastegate's guide, as posted by daan, and it worked first time, with NO dropouts all weekend.

Dont worry, famine, I am open minded and as soon as I have the opportunity this solution, I'll do it! :sly:

Hey, you used it? Great! I never hear from anyone who has (Do I know you as another name?).

I'll do the router write-up as soon as I can get more hardware and software together again.

We've been setting up weekly events where I live, normally with four players. The biggest thing we've run into is trying to even out the competition between drivers while still allowing the best variety of cars within the 30 car limit posed by having to use "favorites" in LAN mode.

Right now, we run the following "Spec" classes (everyone must run the same car)

RX7 LM
Amuse S2000 R1
Motorsports Elise
Suzuki GSX/R4
AC Cobra
Clio Cup
Formula Gran Turismo

Then, we add the following classes:
Group C LeMans
JGTC GT500
JGTC GT300
Rally cars (excluding Group B)
DTM
Japanese supercars (anything that is not a tuner car, and rated at 276HP or less)
Class "B" (similar in concept to the group of cars in GT3.)

Now, about that class B... quite a bit of groundwork has gone into creating that class, and it was spawned by one of us wanting to race the Pontiac Solstice, but us not having a good matchup for it. I spent a week with B Spec and three tracks trying to find cars that were a good match for the Solstice. What I've come up with is a list of 25 cars that make for good competition, even though they may be vastly different in age, weight, power, etc. There are some caveats, however... bear in mind that these are B Spec times, and in many cases, much slower than can be done by a human driver. The worst examples are the Evos and WRXs, it seems like the B Spec driver can't drive them to save his life. We ran several races with this list last weekend and found the competition to be quite close, for the most part, with all four of us running nose-to-tail until somebody made a big mistake.

Anyway, I think it would be valuable if this sort of classing were done with a group of faster cars (Class A) and a group of slower cars (Class C).

Here is the spreadsheet I've developed showing the cars I've tested, their power, weight, power/weight ratio, and the times for the three tracks I chose for testing. To rank the cars, I use the cumulative time for all three tracks. The actual Class B cars are the ones highlighted in green. Cars shaded grey were too slow to make the cut and I did not bother to test them on Grand Valley. Some cars were too fast for the group, but they are included, for comparison. Also note that the power and weight numbers come from Arcade Mode (and from the actual race menu, not the car selection screen, as the numbers tend to differ by alot), since that is the only numbers that matter for LAN play. Times were obtained in time trial mode, and I found that my B Spec driver usually nailed his best lap on the first try, so I rarely went beyond the first lap unless he royally messed up. He was set up on "4" for the whole lap, again, unless he could not make the lap clean, in which case I'd drop him down to "3".

Neurokinetic - I've been thinking about doing something similar for a long time. I've been running lots of a-spec laps just getting random times with random cars, so I might get around to compiling a spreadsheet similar to yours, only with all cars. That'll be my ultimate goal :P When I get around to putting some times down, i'll add it to my sig.

Great job, neurokinetik!

It is a document I will use soon... because we are 4 (soon 6) to play Lan Party and we found a space for rent!
The first Lan Party test we did was sometime ennoying because of the cars we choose.
At the end, I had a tendancy to ask everybody to take the same car!
If not, the problem was there was always 1 guy in the back (or far front), missing the fun of the LAN Party concept...

Your work is very valuable to resolve this kind of problem! Thanks again for the time you spent to do it.👍

What kind of location did you get and at what cost?

I've been looking for empty offices or apartments, but few are willing to even consider allowing us to do it. You can respond privately, if you wish.

I have nothing to hide: :)

Not very nice but clean enough.
In a big 100 years old building near Montreal Downtown.
125.00$ heating and electricity included.
Filled with lot of small business of any king, even musicians with jam space!
This is a small room: 16 x 11 feet with a 14 feet high ceiling.
It is secure, the space is just enough for 6 cockpits and TVs.

You're right, it is rare to find this kind of space, even here, in Montreal. I was looking for one for months, calling everywhere, with no result. I was lucky, a friend of a friend just stopped to rent it.

If you come in Montreal, we can arrange a nice LAN Party. I'll give you my email if you're interested...

So, this is a permanent location? That is impressive and a great idea!

My contact info is in my profile here, I think, but I haven't been around Montreal since before MistressGT and I were married. That doesn't mean we can't go again.

I know of a few other players in your area, so I can pass the info along.

Will you also support ToCA3?

Here is a GT4 frappr, to help you find more players: http://www.frappr.com/gt4players

Yep, I signed a lease for this space... we are already 4 and will be soon 6 that will have the key of the room (unlimited access!). We will for sure invite others guys (mostly well knowned friends) to compete with us.

Hope you can find a kind of same arrangement, LAN Party is a great experience!

Toca3 is an unknown product for me. I heard this game will be released soon. Why not, we'll see...
Thanks for the URL. You're will be both welcome if you're in the Montreal area!

It won't be unknown for long, trust me. Get the demo on the latest Official PlayStation Magazine (or whatever the French version is entitled?).

A lease is an excellent idea, if you have enough who are willing to commit to something like this. A dedicated player would, that's for sure.

What do you think the maximum is that the room can hold?
Players and audience?

I've never played Toca game, but I heard this one will be great, and also more championship oriented than GT4. I'll check the Official PlayStation Magazine...

As soon as (serious) people agree to share the running-cost of this installation, it is so cheap!
We will have 6 cockpits, but no space for more. And maybe 3-4 people will be able to stay around.

Normally, we start our first monday-challenge-night next week. :)

I have to leave. Good night!
