AI stupider than ever?

Just been revisiting my old copies of GT and GT2 and I think that the AI in GT4 is actually stupider than in GT2... It takes wierd lines that are slow as, where the AI in GT2 takes lines similar to yours. Also there is less of the bizzare Brake,Roll,Apex,Brake AI driving in GT2 and the AI seems more proficient at avoiding your car if it is behind you when you brake or whatever. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah I noticed. It's weird, and they brake waaaaay earlier in GT4 than what I do. Same with the exit throttle. But I am a little unsure about avoiding.

i was thinking this yesterday cause i been playing gt3 lately cause gt4 wont work and was just going to make a new thread called "ai gone backwards in gt4?" but infini beat me to it i saw it at the top of the list

edit: honestly:sly:

"worst ai...ever"

I have to agree, but comparing GT3 to GT4, it seems they drive in a 'smoother' fashion. But still pretty stupid, epescially since they have no sense that your on the track aswell...

I disagree that the gt4 ai is the worst. I just started playing gt3 again, and the ai there is definately worse. It seems to me that the ai is actually trying to run you off of the road most of the time. Also gt3 has the stupid "lets keep the race close no matter what" rule. In most races, you can run a clean three laps and win by say 1.5 secs, then do the exact race again, spin out on the first lap and still win by 1.5 secs. At least you don't get handicapping in gt4.

On a side note, I didn't realize how much I bought cars from the used car lots now that I can't buy used cars in gt3.

whether or not the AI is better or worse in GT3 i'm not sure, but I got the distinct impression that they were quicker and smarter in GT2... It's a bit weird though, you wouldn't think that they'd deliberately REGRESS an aspect of the game, especially one that was poor to begin with.

The AI always go in the sand at La Sarthe when I race there, no matter what car I use. Sometimes one car, other times multiples.

Stop calling it "AI" - there is no intelligence whatsoever. They have no reaction to your presence, no reaction to tyre wear (hence amusing incidences in longer 'Ring races and the like) and worst of all - they drove so damn perfectly they're robotic. Long-life tyres due to no slip and an inherent problem of always being in the way. The computer-controlled cars are just an irritation IMO. The "AI" hasn't got better at all, hence why it seems a lot worse in GT4 than GT3.

The AI in GT4 is a very mixed bag, sometime they will do brilliant things and more often than not they will do stupid things, i think it's quite slow in processing more times than not. I've had the AI avoid me and another car which I sideswiped into a wall, the other car drove around him without much fanfare. But I do notice a weird pattern, if the AI catches up to you at a ridiculously accelerated pace, they choke up. You see this a lot on le Sarthe when you drive cars like the S7, and the Speed 12 is in tow, upon slower acceleration, the AI will avoid you(mind you never using the entire road), but say you were a couple of secs ahead they will just run right into the back of your car, leading me to believe that the algorithm for the AI is slow and retarded. PD needs to fix that problem and give the AI much more leeway, like going balls to the walls when they need to, and taking risks, and actually jockeying for position(taking into consideration vehicles around them). Although I've had the AI try to out shoot me for a turn many times, a few of those times I watched em late brake with me and then go off the road, something like what happens in Forza, but not as kamikaze like. Forza's AI tries to take you out, and on top of that, a few cars the AI drives like Aryton Senna the S7R and the Maranello Race car. The S7R is damn near invincible, even after crashes, will hunt you down on long courses, lol.

Depending on what you consider quality in an AI. It would be far easier to program an AI to take a perfect optimum lap every time, than it is to program one that actually makes mistakes -- and learns from them.

The AI driver has to learn the car, the track, and how to pass. They actually learn.

You also have to help them along at times. I don't know if they actually learn from this, but here's an example: I'll start a race at push/overtake flat out, then watch carefully for where they go off the track. The next several laps, I'll cut back to steady or cruise when I approach that section.

Another thing I'm starting to suspect is that you don't want to be in 'overtake' all the time. Everybody's seen them slam into the rear end of a car when it's clear to pass... Well, I've tried cutting back just before something like that would happen, say to 'steady' without 'overtake' on, then let them get behind the car to pass, and then hit 'overtake'. Clean pass.

Simple Test - take a 'like powered' car to the rest of the field - at the strat of the race go straight to the racing line side of the road, as u creep up on the car in front of u and edge up to its body, it wil still pull out and hit u. My car being there should force the AI to take the non standard breaking line....and god forbid...attempt to outbreak me!

One of the things I find most annoying, aside from all the other complaints about the AS (Artificial Stupidity). Is that when they are on those rare occasions going fast enough to compete with you, the line they take is so bizzare that it is impossible to follow closely behind. Even without them hitting me and going off the road, the bad line that they take is enough to ruin the fun of racing for me. I take great pleasure when playing in 2p mode in drifting or braking right behind my human opponent, something that is not possible when racing the AS.

p.s. You can find a classic example of this line when racing a tsukuba or at the first corner on Apricot Hill. The AS will brake hard in a straight line, nothing wrong with that, but it strikes you as being perhaps too early. Then, just before they have fully slowed down they lift off the brakes altogether. While they stay on a line to hit the Apex it becomes clear that they are going to fast for the exit. At the point of the apex, right as you have lined up a perfect over and under pass, they brake heavily again and creep around the corner before blasting off to do it all again. I am aware that "parking" on the apex is a legitimate anti-overtaking tactic in reality, but i've never seen anyone do it on every corner for 40laps...

I'm sure the AI is planning to kill me.
I was driving one of the rallies on Citta di Aria in a Nissan R92CP (I don't like the rallies, this way they're over quickly) against an Impreza Rally Car.
At some point I made a minor steering error at hgh speed, which caused my Nissan to spin and get stuck between two walls. Since the track at that point was very narrow it took me some time to get my car out of that position.
At the moment I got my car almost free, the screen shook like it had never done before. The impreza had crashed into me at high speed, forcing my car back in it's old position, stuck between two walls.
The Nissan blocked the complete track at that point, which was not something the AI could compute. Instead of waiting for me to get my car free, the Ipreza kept pushing my Nissan, making angry engine noises. The pushing didn't help the situation at all. It took quite some time before we were racing again!

That happened to me too!

This Starion rally car just pushed me till the wider portion of the track in citti de Aria, ELL OH ELL

The game gives a new meaning to defensive driving. My number one complaint is the bull in the china stop approach the other cars take.

It seem I'm getting bumped hard from behind a few times in every race, even knocked off the track around hair pins. There was one race in the exteme group (I forget what name) where the other cars really made me mad. I had come in first each prior race and was coming down to the end in this one, when a car slammed me onto pit road. Basically that did me in.

i don't get bumped, i get rammed! the ai cars on "the ring" on certain corners run off the track and t-bone me on their return to the track. i also have been pushed into pits because of the ai cars. overall it was a letdown, not realistic enough. sorry polyphony maybe next time.

I don't get bumped I'm to far out in front for that to happen. but they brake test me every second race like clock work.

and then he wakes up.

Er, no. Assuming you're talking about bjb's post, that sounds pretty familiar to me - especially the brake test. I agree that the AI is pretty rubbish, but it's not difficult to adjust to how they drive and beat them cleanly even in a 200pt race.
