I have edited my first post to focus on helping other people. You can use these sites to check your internet connection. General rule of thumb for high demanding games is 50kb per person upload if your hosting.

Upload / 50 = Number of people you can host in GRAW 2.

Here are some examples.

800kb upload / 50 = 16 people
700kb upload / 50 = 14 people
600kb upload / 50 = 12 people
500kb upload / 50 = 10 people
400kb upload / 50 = 8 people
300kb upload / 50 = 6 people
200kb upload / 50 = 4 people

Other games are around 30kb upload per person.
 
Personally, I use speedtest.net. They have a decent number of servers scattered through the US, and the world, plus the UI looks cool. :P

I'm not sure how it all works, but does everything you connect to a router tap just a tiny little bit of bandwidth? Like even when something is turned off but in standby it still uses electricity. If that is right, that might be you issue. I still wouldn't disconnect everything except for the device I want to use to have a faster connection, though. :)
 
I HAVE GREAT NEWS!!!!!! I called my cable company with this information and they said for $10.00 more a month they just upgraded me from 6megs download speed to 8megs download speed. They said that now my connection runs at 768 upload speed instead of 388!! I cant wait to see how well it works now. :) I guess the transfer rate is also going to be around 600-1000kb. Whatever that means.
 
Now that we have been upgraded, she just tested it with the router and its a little lower than 760 but still way better than before. Its twice as fast now. It still averages around

700kb upload with the router, 1 pc, 2 xbox360s.

760kb upload without the router.

Most cable companies have a second layer for a slight fee. Mine actually makes it the default, and you can optionally scale back for a reduced bill.

If they tell you you're at 768K upload and you're getting 700 or better, that's really really good. You'll NEVER actually see their numbers.

The sad thing is I wish they would have told me about this faster internet 4 friggin years ago!!! I have been with them that long and I just now got lucky enough to get a comcast rep on the phone that was a gamer. I will know tonight if it is better. Should be better for sure since its at around 700+kb upload now. And thats 700+ WITH the router hooked up. :)

It means....THAT'S FRIGGIN AWESOME!!! So is this a package deal or are you getting just cable internet access? How much is your bill now?

I have always had cable tv and internet in one package but they just finally informed me over the phone that I can have FASTER cable internet. It was $59 a month now it will be $69 but it should be almost double the upload speed. I guess the upload speed is the most important for gaming. Like I said....I wish they would have told me this 4 years ago. They just gave me the basic package which was only 388kb upload. Now its over 700kb upload with this new speedtier upgrade. :) I will be testing it for sure tonight after I get out of work.

They probably didn't have it 4 years ago. Many cable companies have upgrade their systems just within the last year or two. My top speed went from 4m down/ 384 up to 8m down/768 up last summer, no change in rate. They sent me a new cable modem and told me to toss the old one.
 
I guess internet ping is something you want to check too. Here is how to check your internet ping.

click start... run... type "cmd"... hit enter... then type in "ping www.google.com" (without the quotes)... a good ping should be around 20-30ms.

That depends who, or more precisely, where you ping. If I ping google, which is in the US, I get an average of 31.

If I ping the bbc.co.uk, I get an average of 22.
 
What decreases or increases ping? For example. If I am playing online with the 360 and we have a software virus scan like norton running on the PC will that slow our ping down?
 
I believe the major factor in ping is distance between you and the server.

If Norton isn't doing anything over the 'net, then it won't affect your 360's 'net connection.

I suggest that everone at least check out what their connection is. If your not over 388kb then you should contact your internet provider and see if there is a way to increase your speed like I did. Now I doubled the upload for only an extra $10.00 a month and they did it right over the phone within a couple minutes. 👍
 
Something I've never understood is the upload rate. Does it rise with the download rate, or are they seperate from each other?
My download rate is 9927 kb/s (advertised as 10mb/s by my ISP), but my upload rate is down in the 380 range.
 
They must be different from each other because I have seen some major different numbers. Like at work here our download is only 1,300kb but our upload is over 1,400kb. I am pretty sure we have T1 here. However like you just showed us your download is 9,000kb and your upload is only 380kb. I know the upload is the important number when it comes to playing games.
Also my Cable company sais I have 8.8mb download but when I run the test its only around 3,000 at home. However my upload is right where they sait it should be. Around 700-760kb upload. Not sure how that works.
 
Well I did some checking, currently at 3.0/512k on cable for $59.99/mo and can upgrade to DSL speed of
6.0 meg/512 kbps for the same price. I almost freaked as the lady said there was a new service in my area, DSL of 15MB down and 768 up for the same $60/mo but unfortunately my house is too far away from the nearest data center. :(

187 kbps upload speed.

That's for £18 a month (Or $35) allegedly on 2MB broadband. Sounds about right.

Sounds like this is at school? They have big circuits, and "throttled" ports to different users at different bandwidths.

Adding to the asymmetric nature of home broadband, the theory is that for web browsing, general Internet use, you need download bandwidth much more than upload. Your upload is theoretically something like a URL, while your download is whatever comes from that page: the site itself, files you downlaod, etc. Cable and ADSL (the A stands for Asymmetric) prioritize download speed for that reason. They give you a 3, 4, 6, 8-megabit circuit, but dedicate most of it to download, saves money for everybody.
SDSL, not nearly as common, is symmetrical, same rates down and up. Same goes for "real" circuits, like T1s and up from there. Gamers need the upload to get their bullets, rockets, lasers, proton bombs, or whatever, to the enemy before they receive such from their enemy.
 
Can someone please explain to me the download numbers? Comcast sais I have 8.8mb download/ 760kb upload. However when I run the numbers now I am around 2,540 download and 730kb upload. Why are my download numbers so low or is that a different download number than what they claim? If my download is that low will it matter for gaming?
 
Many router/firewall devices have a maximum throughput rate, so in that case, your router actually becomes the bottleneck in your Internet connection.
It's not because the router vendor is evil, it's because the router hardware is only capable of doing the things it does at a certain speed. The things it does includes changing the source IP address of outgoing packets (NAT) and keeping a table of those changes, examining an incoming packet, comparing it to previous requests from the network, changing the destination address to the computer's local address (NAT again), rejecting (hopefully) unsolicited packets, forwarding packets by port number to services on the LAN (http, smtp, game server, etc.) assigning IP addresses to machines on the LAN (DHCP) and sometimes acting as your LAN's DNS server (doing name lookups and forwarding requests to the real DNS service on your ISP's servers). If you have a real firewall and not just a NAT router, then there'll be inspection of the packets moving through, looking for malformed packets or other weirdnesses that might indicate evildoers trying to get into your bizness.

Now, if you want all that to happen and keep your 8Mbit download speed, you're probably gonna need more than a 39-dollar router.

Now, if you just hook your PC to the cable modem, no router, and your speed doesn't change, you may need to call Comcast and see if they can find out why.
 
Here at work - 17843 kbps D/L, 9134 kb/s U/L ("Faster than 98% of global connections :D )

Will update later with my home broadband, but I guess it will be considerably slower!

From the speakeasy.net Atlanta server this is what I get

Download Speed: 18262 kbps (2282.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 365 kbps (45.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

and from the DSLReports Miami server, this is what I get

Download speed: 5077Kb/s
Upload speed: 351kb/s

Why such a big difference?

We are paying for an 8Mbit connection from Comcast btw...

Here at school I get about 1mb/s up and 1mb/s down, but that is often much slower.

But I still get about the same numbers without the router. Why is my download speed so low when they claim 8.8megs? Thats the question I dont understand. Even without the router its almost the same using the links in the first post.
