Should there be...

Should there be a new rule for people who revive old and buried threads? I believe so because lately many people are reviving old threads without knowing. If there is a rule like this, then it's not really being enforced well. I've seen countless threads brung back to life thanks to people posting and letting them think it's a new thread. So what do you think?

If they bring back an old thread that means they used the search function...which is something I have no problem with.

Its not too big of a deal if they actually contribute to the thread.

But if they aren't, its kinda annoying.

No problem with me unless, its a thread asking a question, and the reviver in question feels they need to answer it again.

If someone revives an old thread and contributes to it, then there's no problem.

If someone revives an old thread for no reason, then it usually gets spotted, and locked.

So it's not much different to a new thread? With an old thread, if it's useful, it's okay. If it's not, it's not. With a new thread, if it's useful, it's okay. If it's not, it's not.

Exactly!

We want people to bring back old threads rather than start a new one, when they want to further the discussion. That means that they are trying to help themselves instead of relying on other people to help them. It also means they want to be efficient and clarify or extend the existing discussion, rather than running through it all again (again).

People who dig up very old threads just to add a meaningless post, or to fool people into thinking it's a new thread, are spammers and get treated accordingly. But THAT's the infraction, not specifically the act bringing back an old thread.

Sometimes, the thread is resurrected to "answer" a question posted ages ago, when the thread starter has clearly solved it. What's your stance on those?

Specifically, this thread.

often times, we'll debate if the post has a relevance, and either let the thread gain new life, or we delete the irrelevant post and the thread returns to its previous location in the timeline.

Off-Topic: How come there's a + sign next to my username? This wasn't there a while ago... I see it next to other peoples name occasionally. :scared: Also is there a Nitto sub-forum here somewhere?

If you (Or anyone else) are on your buddy list, they will have a + sign next to their name.

I'm assuming you mean the currently active users thread. eg, lthiele+

Could you post a screen shot of the + sign yout questioning?

There is no Nitto sub forum, and there never will be. The first occurence of Nitto wreaked such havoc, it became the first game discussion to be banned. The current Nitto Classic thread will have a short life if it follows the previous itteration of the game.

It means you've added yourself to your Buddy List. The other's you see are other buddies in your Buddy List.

Should there be a rule in the AUP to not make useless threads without searching? People do it all the time. Then the next thing you know, the mods close another useless thread. I'm sure threads that are really useless give Moderators and Jordan a headache. The problem seems to just be increasing. They don't redirect you to a search function when making a thread in the GT4 forums for NOTHING. If it's a problem, check the FAQ's or Game Guides section. Those can answer most questions you may be expieriencing. So please search around the site before making a new thread. There's no point to making a thread that someone else has made already, especially when the problem has been solved numerous times.

Actually people will get a vacation from the forums if they keep making stupid posts. Look through the banned user log, I'm sure you'll find a couple.

Yes a person will get banned if they keep making meaningless posts, but we get a ton of new members each day, if a handful make a new thread covering a topic that has been covered and answered, there's going to be alot of useless threads.

Me and Tuner were talking about this a minute ago, someone asked the same question someone else did in the GT4 general questions thread, but they decided it would be easier to make a new thread and get their answer that way instead of taking a minute and using the search function.

So should there be a new way to persuade more guests to register for GTP? Like making the Gran Turismo 4 forum restricted from guests, making them want to join? Or will that cause to many new members causing ruccas?

EDIT: See how I didn't make a new thread for this? :)

Converting guests to registered members has never really been a problem for us, and that is a very dangerous technique to use. Blocking our most popular forum to unregistered users would also block search engine spiders, which is the major source of our traffic.

Good point.

I recently posted something about this idea, and I have posted it here, so it can be more fit for this thread, rather than the GT4 section. I believe there should be a "Words Per Post" thing on this site, just to let us be informed of how much of a contributer (or post whore) that person is. 💡

Seems pretty cool, and not to hard to implement, due to the fact that there is a post per day thing already. I think that this would help GTP members strive for higher quality posts, so it can look good in thier profile. Lately I have been making longer, better posts.

Members like JGE3000GT and Digital-Nitrate would love this little feature. They tend to make long posts with plenty of information for everyone to read. I think this idea is sexy.

How about you guys?
*Awaits harsh criticism* :nervous:

A long post doesn't always signify a good one, though. I know several members here who make unneccessarily long posts while still managing to say almost nothing.

A good post is a good post, no matter how long it is. I don't see what the big deal is with assigning numbers to everything anyway.

Case in point - this post is short, and to the point. In fact I'd say it was even +Rep worthy. Certain other posts can be so long and wordy without ever getting to the point that they could be deemed -Rep worthy. Quantity =/= Quality.

Hmmm, how about a notification of when someone has edited thier post, or replied in a thread, while you was typing your reply in the same thread? There's alot of posts that ends up just like someone elses, because they didn't know someone else made a reply already, due to the fact that they was typing up thier reply while someone just finished posting one. :)

It would be just right for this site, because we don't have the most activity here, we have just the right amount of members.

Preview before you post and and check the topic review before you click submit.

Its not really a big issue though, is it?

It better to dig up old threads because as has being said it has proved they have used the search function to find a topic they can add to or help with without starting a new thread so no there shouldn't be a system to block this.....

I have recently found some funny posts, so I was looking around, trying to use the advanced search for a particular thread, then it started showing other posts. Is there a way to like search in the thread using key words from a specific username? I tried everything I could, and still couldn't find a search like that.

If there is something like this, help would be gladly appreciated. I am really trying to search under a username and thread.

Also a way to just type a username (or a part of it, while the feature that shows a list of usernames that started with the part you just typed in the username box) and find thier account somewhere?

Maybe a system that shows a list of threads, when you type like say...
"What is your favorite"

Then a list pops up showing thread names that start out with "What is your favorite." Couldn't hurt, eh? :)
