With the exceptions of GT3 and GT4P (and GT2 - just) I'd say that Europe just about bags it.

If looked sales of Need for speed series, figures might be opposite. So are there more petrolheads among the gamers in Europe? :)
I bought my PS2 with GT4 bundle.

Perhaps it shall be calculated in a per-capita basis.

Lets see:

Europe: 728M people
North America: 250M people
Japan: 128M people

For Europe:
2005/03/09 GRAN TURISMO 4 (Europe) 5,180
2001/07/20 GRAN TURISMO 3 A-spec (Europe) 5,840
2000/01/28 GRAN TURISMO 2 (Europe) 3,680
1998/05/08 GRAN TURISMO (Europe) 4,300
Total: 0.0260 GT per capita

For NA:
2005/02/22 GRAN TURISMO 4 (North America) 2,690
2001/07/10 GRAN TURISMO 3 A-spec (North America) 7,130
1999/12/23 GRAN TURISMO 2 (North America) 3,960
1998/05/12 GRAN TURISMO (North America) 3,990
Total: 0.0710 GT Per Capita

For Japan:
2004/12/28 GRAN TURISMO 4 (Japan) 1,200
2001/04/28 GRAN TURISMO 3 A-spec (Japan) 1,890
1999/12/11 GRAN TURISMO 2 (Japan) 1,710
1997/12/23 GRAN TURISMO (Japan) 2,550
Total: 0.0574 GT Per Capita

So, why the 5 million difference from GT3 to GT4 in North America?

I don't think that works because revenue in total dollars is what matters to the accountants.

Uhhh I've just added all those figures together and in total the GT series, around the world, has shifted......

47,220,000 units

....a rather impressive figure to say the least.

What makes that more impressive is that it is a relatively niche game. I know tons of gamers that don't like racing games and even some racing game fans that don't enjoy the simulation racing style games. "I just want to race. I don't want to take license tests and have to tune my cars." Or my favorite, "It's just too realistic to be fun."

Of course, I guess it sells better for its genre than other games because you aren't wading through multiple games in the genre like you do with 50 or more FPSs and RPGs. So, the money spent on the genre doesn't get spread around as much. I know I don't buy a lot of games because I already spent money on three other games in the genre. GT however is mostly in a class by itself.

Add another 80 Million to North America.

I've been looking for Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo - Seoul for ages. I can't find it!

I have all the others though.

Olá! :)

Is that "Tokyo-Seoul" game any different from the Tokyo-Geneva we got in Europe???

Because of SCEA! These guys couldn't market themselves out of a wet paper bag!

One great move they had going on their side, though, was bundling GT3 with 700,000 North American PS2 units (I bought one around 2003), so there is a significant part of that volume because there was never a GT4 bundle, as far as I recall.

And, don't forget that SCEE "kept GT selling in their market" for a few years, by bringing in the Concept version and GT4 Prologue and many of those one-off GT4 demos. They kept their market primed for GT fans, while SCEA went on a vacation for all of those years thinking that we would get "confused" (to make a direct quote). :grumpy:

Even the fans of GT can market the game better than SCEA!

Another reason for the difference is that it looks as if more North Americans just gave up on the series and never even gave it a chance.

Cheers,

MasterGT

Do you have figures for NFS? The series is very popular here. AFAIK each NFS hits 500.000+ copies in Germany alone. Germany is PC territory though. The german market for video games (consoles) is only the fourth biggest in Europe (UK > France > Spain > Germany), while the market for PC games is by far the biggest. I guess the NFS figures are quite high, because every NFS is released for almost every platform. GT however is only for Playstation. It is probably the best selling game for any Sony console, but it's not available for any other platform.

I was wondering about the GT4 sales numbers in America myself. I think it comes down to a few factors.
  • GT4 has been out for only two years, compared to six for GT3.
  • The XBox and Forza as Vanishing Boy says may have been a factor.
  • PC racers such as GTR, rFactor and Live For Speed may have been a factor, and America is the stronghold of PC gaming.
  • Another possibility is the increase of drift fandom, and GT4 is rather hard to drift in.
GT4 was bundled briefly with the PS2, but not nearly as long as the GT3 bundle.

Interesting numbers!
I wonder what would be the numbers for the GT5 or the GT5p. Of course we don't know if GT5p will be sold in stores or as the download on the PS3. Still the downloads could be calculated I think.

[*]GT4 has been out for only two years, compared to six for GT3.
Comparing the two versions by their PlayStation Platinum Awards alone (based on sales...), GT3 got three awards and GT4 only earned one. SONY has to be greatly disappointed in the performance of GT4, especially considering how long it took to get to market and how much more than GT3 it would have cost to make.

Cheers,

MasterGT

Overall the figures do make it look like that, but broken down by region, GT4 was either as successful or more successful in every market apart from the US.

Arguably Sony was more disappointed by SCEA than GT4.

You mean GT Concept and GT4:P were not released in North America????

Considering "Concept" sold a million copies in Europe ... and Prologue nearly half a million ... I don't understand why they didn't release those games in a market where GT3 was so successful ... :dunce:

Hmm. Maybe this explains why most of the angry comments I've been getting on my GT4 critique YouTube video have involved the use of the word "arse."

You saw the numbers. :)

The explanation, as I quoted directly above, is that SCEA did not want to "confuse" the customers in their region.

The exact quote from the GT4 SCEA chat with US Producer for the Gran Turismo series, Taku Imasaki.

"GTÇhampion: Why didn't you guys bring the Concept games to North America, I am sure you guys realize that they would sell pretty good over here I just want to know the real reason why they were not released here in north america. thank you.

Taku Imasaki: To GTÇhampion: We already had 3 great full-versions out there (GT1, 2 and 3), and didn't want to confuse the consumers/retailers by releasing a 'smaller' version." 04-22-2005

Maybe now some of you will understand what we have been up against all of these years. At least some North Americans were included in the GT4 On-line beta test, but that was probably just a bone thrown to help pacify us. I mean, what more would they learn from this group that they wouldn't learn in any other major GT market? Nothing.

Cheers,

MasterGT

After watching the Sony E3 Press Conference I had a feeling that SCEA was filled with a bunch of a-holes, and this only strengthens my feelings.

North American population is actually about 514,600,000 people. Not 250mill

And if you were talking about just the USA the populaion is estimated at about 302,159,000 people as of 2007.

Just thought i'd straighten that up.

I just wish PD would get somebody to update the American GT website. Why is it still about GT4? PD obviously sells a ton of games over here, so please update.
