Car Questions

I'm currently looking for a car to be my first car, I'll be 16 soon. The car I want the most is a Mitsubishi Eclipse, but my dad's mind is set on buying me a Honda Civic. To sum it up, he's basically convinced they're the perfect cars.

He's got a bad view about the Eclipses because one of his friends owned one and it gave him a problem or two with the transmission. Anyways, one of his MAIN factors in the car thing, is the insurance cost, he says that since an Eclipse is considered a sports car or something, the insurance costs are alot higher then that of a Civic. Is this true? Which one would cost more to insure, a Civic or Eclipse? Also, which one is an all around better car?

Please help me and give me your opinions, I would really appreciate it if somebody could just compare the two cars and tell me honestly which one is all around better. Thank you so much!!!

1 thing; wrong forum. should be in the automotives general forum (or whatever it's called).
Next manner of business is welcoming you to the GTP. Enjoy your stay...

Actually, I'd buy a ZX2 Escort. They are plentiful, cheap, reliable, and get about 30 MPG.
I also don't think they are all that much to insure. You MUST take driver's education. In this state it lowers your insurance bill substantially.

honestly, if you get an eclipse, get an older one. the new ones aren't all that great looking. but if you want a kickass looking car with well above average power, nissan makes those...and makes them very well...

What year and model is the civic he thinks you should have?
A new one or old one?
I personally can't see Eclipses being that high in insurance terms to be classified as a sports car, maybe a hot hatch but I wouldn't of though a sports car  .
All we need now is Giles to give a lecture on what forums to use for your thread and move this one.:P

i have several friends who own pre 94 eclipses... most have the normal problems that occur with any older car... (i like them more than any eclipse post 94)
The biggest problems have been tranny problems... Someone had to have an engine rebuilt because they were running on low oil...:irked:shame... its a good car tho... if i had a choice between a civic and any eclipse i would take the eclipse... the only ones that i would think of as a "semi-sports" car is the gst or the gsx... i would take the gsx over most american mitsu's anyday... and i would take a gs over a gst... but once you start dealing with the turbo versions of the eclipse (especially the older ones) it would be wise to invest money into making a more reliable car... i have heard many stories about the turbo pre 94 eclipses.

i cannot imagine that the civic would be grossly cheaper than an eclipses insurance... arent civics an easy to steal car???

check out consumer reports...

other than normal maintainence these seem to be problems with the 90-94 eclipse...

Steering problems: Cars that drift or pull to the right may be cured by replacing the lower control arm with one having rear bushing with a built-in offset. (1994)

its not sharp or anything... it will just kinda drift to the right at a steady pace so you must always be slightly turning hte vehicle to go straight... lol... trust me tho its so slight you think its in you imagination... too bad it happens in the car i drive somethimes lol... and only that car...

Transaxle leak: Transaxle end clutch oil seal could leak leading to a loss of overdrive (fourth gear). (1994)

Vehicle shake: Drivetrain vibrations may be eliminated by replacing the transmission mounting brackets. (1990-94)

Vehicle shake: Vibration at idle is probably due to the upper radiator mounting posts not being centered in the mounting brackets. (1990-94) :irked:

Well, i dont really have a good knowledge about cars, but, i would go for a car made by an american company like ACURA, or FORD. or maybe a different Company like SUZUKI. here's a tip, just pick the one you like, (i would go for the one with automatic transmission, good looks, and very high horsepower, and also good handling)

Any Honda's (sensible, fun, and practical), Toyota's (economical, smooth, and reliable), and Acura's (fun, semi-fast, and perfect driver dars for the money). You'll never go wrong with these cars. Avoid some Ford's, Chevy's, Dodge's, and very few Mitsubishi's. Older BMW's (be very carefull shopping those), and VW (careful on the overall condition) are nice alternatives if you like Euro's. :)

I dont think anyone has really answered her questions. Your father is right. An eclipse is a sports car, however, reliability wise, both the civic and eclipse are on the same level in my opinion. In the long run, a civic would probably be much cheaper. You can also get very sporty civic (the SI), but I dont know how the insurance would be any different. And why do you say avoid american cars? Can you give any specific reasons other than a biased response like 'they suck and fall apart and arent good'? My girlfriend bought a new Dodge Neon, and it has been just fine. The only thing thats wrong with it are the looks (in my opinion).

And to the person who said that acura made american cars....you're weird. Acura = Honda dude.

Hey nutball Acura is Honda, just like Lexus is Toyota. (didnt read bobs post derrrr)

If I were you, I would go with the Civic for now. They are fun enough to drive, and will be more reliable and cheaper to insure. It will also hold its resale value better than the Eclipse, and you can get a new Civic for the price of a used Eclipse.

Every new driver is hard on their first car, so get something simple, capable, and reliable. Get a few years under your belt, then start looking at something sportier.

Another car you might want to consider is the Neon R/T, which will outperform and outhandle the Civic by a healthy margin, for about the same price. It will also be cheaper to insure than the Eclipse, and more reliable. Don't believe anything you hear about Dodge's build quality or reliablilty unti; you actually sit in the car and test drive it. Everyone who doesn't own a Chrysler product "knows" how unreliable they are, but nearly everybody who owns one has very few problems.

Civics are in the Top 10 Most Stolen Cars though. My sister had a silver '99 Civic EX Sedan and it was stolen three times...
