At the wet 1996 Monaco GP, which holds the record for the fewest number of cars (3) to be running at the end of a Grand Prix race, Olivier Panis scored his sole F1 career victory, earning the last ever F1 victory for the Ligier team. It's the most recent race won by a French driver, in a French car.
The race was won by Dan Wheldon, as rookie J. R. Hildebrand, who took the lead with two laps to go, went high on the final turn of the final lap and he hit the outside wall. As his wrecked car was coasting down the frontstretch, Dan Wheldon slipped by in the final meters to take the victory.
Mark Webber, the first Australian to start his home race since David Brabham in 1994, drove his Minardi to 5th position, Minardi's first points in some years. After the race, Webber celebrated with an enthusiasm more than equal to winner Michael Schumacher, and was given his own podium celebration.
