Ricciardo has truly earned the success he's experienced this year. I'm a Lewis and Mercedes fan, but absolute respect to Ricciardo for what he's achieved. The guy is someone that could potentially be the face of F1. His on track skill is amazing, and he sure showed that with some amazing passes at Monza, and off track he's got the character that fans love. I watched him win in Montreal this year from the finish line grandstand, and was right there at the front during the podium ceremony. It sure was something seeing his reaction to his first win. Still on the RBR note, I'm really excited to see how Kvyat does. Has anyone moved to a top team as quickly as him? If Kvyat can continue to improve the way he has, he's going to be a championship contender in a few seasons time.

I only heard about the Vettel news as I started watching qualifying today, and it was a bit of a shock. What you say does make lots of sense though Rock, so the move for him does seem like it can be a good one for him, but his ego will have to be checked at the door. Vettel pairing with Ferrari will be a huge hit or miss, like Raikonnen's return. I'd love to see Ferrari contend again, it's been a bit disappointing seeing them struggle this season. Whether Vettel is the answer or not, it's hard to say.

I'm excited to see what next season has to bring. Even though this season was the one with the most changes (technical changes though), next season brings tons of driver changes and the reintroduction of Honda. I think I'm more excited for next season than I was for this season. Here's hoping I can make it to the British Grand Prix to experience it all over again!

Agree with all of this. To be clear, I have nothing against ricciardo, as I'm a huge RBR fan. And it makes me really sad to see Seb leave. The only point in trying to make is that I understand why he's leaving, and I don't think it has all that much to do with ricciardo. I'm also really excited to see what kyvat does too.

I may be even more interested to see what happens to seb though. I don't think it'll work at the same way as it did for Lewis, that's for sure, but 2-3 years from now might be interesting when Ferrari and RBR both catch up a bit.

One thing's for sure, tonight (PST) we get to witness what should be a very good F1 race at a classic race venue.
So I stopped for a moment and thought of the best ones I've seen.... This is one.

I saw you were in 1st and wondered how the heck you did that! Nice work!

I'll be so glad when that combo is gone. It's challenging, yes, and I love a challenge, but I just can't find the balance of that car at all. It's a bomb in my hands, lol.

For the two drivers that have submitted time trials today before the deadline to do so, you will get your placement messages tomorrow.

I'll also throw in my take of F1 here. It doesn't matter what driver goes where. The team with the best car will win more often than not. This is true of most forms of motorsport but I can't think of another one where the gap between cars is wider than it is in F1.

Unfortunately, that's true Bowler. I think F1 and WTCC are the 2 that are leading the way in that regard this season. At least from what I gather from the broadcasts, Citroen had way more time to develop their car last year, while other teams were racing and developing for both the current season, and the 2014 season, so it seemed a bit like an unfair advantage. They've just dominated. At least with Mercedes in F1, they were in the same situation as the rest of the teams.

My comment about being "the Webber" of Red Bull was just a way to point out the irony of the situation. Webber was always #2 to Vettel, and Webber hated it. Now the shoe is on the other foot, and Vettel wants nothing to do with it.

You ask why would he want to stay? I'd say for the exact reason that you mentioned above. Nobody regards the Red Bulls as the fastest cars on the grid anymore. If he can win in a car that's not the fastest, it will be the ultimate way to silence his critics. His rookie teammate has already won three times this year in a car that's inferior to Mercedes, so why can't he? Oh wait, that's why we're having this discussion in the first place..

Why would he be motivated? How about that fact that he's the four-time world champion and gets paid almost 30-times as much as the rookie teammate who is outperforming him? Being the fierce competitor that we all know Vettel is, I find it hard to believe that he would use "lack of motivation" as an excuse.

I can understand how Vettel would love to be considered GOAT, and you could make an argument that winning three or four championships with Ferrari would do just that. However, there's one thing that would absolutely ensure him not even being in the GOAT discussion, and that's being #2 on his own team (which is the situation he's suddenly found himself in).

I'm not sure what you're saying here. You seem to be saying that it's not that he's being outperformed on his own team, but rather that his team doesn't have a chance of competing for a championship. If that were the case, why would he leave for Ferrari (allegedly) when they have even less of a chance at competing for a championship?

Vettel has made several comments that indicate it was indeed more his teammate than the car. Here are just a few examples:

"Daniel has done a very, very good job and has made life difficult for me," he said. "But it's good for the team's morale. His results have proved that our car isn't as bad as all that."

"If he's quicker then me, I have to accept it"

Vettel said he had no excuses as both drivers have the same car, and that Ricciardo, in his first season with Red Bull, has simply been performing better.

Mark webber was pissed because he couldn't win in the fastest car. Vettel was brutally honest by saying "I'm faster" (which he was) and webber was pissed all year about it - and got stomped in the process, in the same car, and quit the sport as a result.

Vettel this year has also been honest and acknowledged he doesn't like the car, and that ricciardo has generally been much more successful. I (nor Vettel himself for that matter) have never really argued to the contrary of those things, so I don't see what youre getting at by pointing out the quotes. Just because he said those things doesn't mean that's why he chose to leave.

Also consider the gap between himself and riccardo is extremely smaller than what his gap was to webber. Next year could have been completely different in the new car (the gap really wasn't that big this year, the only times ricciardo did much much better was spa and Hungary)

But he doesn't care about beating ricciardo, he cares about winning championships. So I'll say it again, I think he sees that no one can beat Mercedes right now. Whether it's in a Ferrari or Red Bull, he proves a lot by coming back to the top, and if he does it with Ferrari he'll get much more of the credit than if it were with Red Bull. Throw on top the money Ferrari is probably paying, the image and prestige of Ferrari (and the fact that he grew up worshipping schumi and Ferrari), and there are more than enough reasons to say that the decision has less to do with "running from Ricciardo" and much more to do with his chance at building his legacy by winning with another team, one he's always admired.

Of course, everyone is entitled to think whatever they want to about it, and at the end of the day (1) none of us really know the reason for the decision and (2) it doesn't even really matter. One thing I do know though is that if vettel is faster than red bull this coming year, no one in their right mind will argue that ricciardo is the better driver, or that vettel left because of ricciardo. You could justifiably say ricciardo was faster in the RBR10, but saying anything more than that would be the equivalent of me arguing that I should be in A higher division because I was really competitive in the Nissan gtr gt500 at Suzuka.

I will concede that ricciardo doing well this year is a probably factor in forcing this decision, but I do not think it is biggest factor, as you seem to be suggesting. It's probably more of a "this is the right time" influence on something that was inevitable. (Ironically, I remember reading a hypothetical 2015 drivers lineup back in March or April that had vettel at Ferrari because of Mercedes dominance and that he worshipped Ferrari and schumi as a kid - never thought it'd happen, so I guess that just further shows that I recognize ricciardo played a role, but that it was only to push on the other bigger reasons that were already there)

So... Monsoon in Suzuka?

Yes, Webber was slower, but don't forget how terrible his car reliability was in 2013. You couldn't even script it to be as bad as it was. Also, what about the team orders that Vettel ignored in Malaysia? One would think that those things combined might make you feel a bit isolated from the team.

I don't disagree. I'm just saying the circumstances are a lot different.

You watching btw?

-Attention Division 3 Racers-

I will be the primary host for D3 this season and as you should already know that it is open as a 'friends only' room. With that being said, you will need to send tcrash15 a friend request to be able to join in the fun. It is up to you to send me your 'friend request' and I will be accepting them up until 9pm ET / 6pm PT tonight. So don't wait until the last minute or you will have to wait until next Sunday. I will open the room at 10 past the hour and would like to ask that everyone join as early as you can to make sure there is no connection issue and everyone can see one another. I like to start the races as soon as @JLBowler gives the go ahead to start the night.

-To All Divisions-

If you are not sure what division you are in, please see the drivers list to see where you will be racing. Once you find out what division you will be racing, check to see who is the host of your division by checking the Team Snail link to see who that is going to be and make sure you send them a 'friend request' ASAP. Don't be that person who posts that they can't get in room because you didn't get your request sent out.
