I was wondering if we could do a poll of what wheel/DS3 setup everyone is using. Mabye list it next to our color/number lists. I would be very interested to see this and i think other snails might appreciate it also. I normally use a DFGT but just got my hands on a G25 and am going to start racing with that.

Handle, I think your looking at it to critically. Sure, getting taken out by someone sucks, and sure, them losing points is a small penance when your also outed points too. But thats racing. see, fits there.
so far, though, this will be another week, (the second of 4 since we started the steward network) without a greivance (may not be true yet though). As far as the whole passing thing goes. you need practice running in traffic. Devious's training is great, But you are following her, not attacking. You will run great lap times, but without practice trying to pass, you miss out. on a whole different set of tools needed. honestly, something a lot of us do here, and it works well in d3 and d2, just stay on the guy you wanna pass, keep a little pressure, and they will miss a brake point eventually. If you want, I'll be opening my room shortly to goof around. you can come practice there.
 
From what I've read, I'm not sure that I really know the difference between "that's racing" - maybe when someone loses control, accidentally smacks you out of a good spot, and you're now out of luck vs. "say what?" when someone hits you, you're out of contention or not even in sight of the pack, and the 'satisfaction' is "oh, but they got a DQ for that race that your ran dead last for the last 20 minutes for...." The penalty, while accurate, doesn't make up for the game time spent not really gaming.

I want to be crystal clear - I'm not experienced in real life or online racing. Truly, I'm struggling to 'get it' - and I can't really tell the difference between when I have a 'right to turn' vs. 'I thought I could turn right... but this guy came up and made it clear that I couldn't...'

My growing frustration is far more out of trying to mince around not touching anyone on corners or at slowdown points, and thinking that I'm the only one doing it in the back of the pack - and I'm dead blanking last again. Not a winning combo for me, at least.

Handlebar, it takes time and practice. You have to have seat time but with others on the track. I don't know if you practice alone or not but I'll be more than happy to practice with you. Not just me but there are plenty of people to practice with here. Come and practice on Wed. Thurs is Sharkies tutoring.

I'm not that great by any means but I practice and get as much seat time so I can get better and you can too! But my main thing is that I practice with people that know what to do and I try to absorb the info. Send me a friend request and lets practice. Anytime I'm on, I'm usually practicing in my lounge or someone elses because on line is a little different than in the practice room of GT5.

I use a G27 and custom cockpit a friend fabricated from a rowing machine.

Monday Mayhem is upon us again my fellow snails. In recognition of Mr. Shelby, thats what we will be running for the dirty racing segment of the night. And I think the cats tonight shall be the same, maybe. Division 3, 10 EDT. Game on!
 
WOW. so far esh and cheeb's setups are SICK.:) Does anyone play in 3D or have a multiscreen setup? I also have the Sony 3D display but don't use 3D for Sunday. o yea my wheel is on a table and i have a office chair. budget setup.:guilty:

I've been watching this conversation closely, since as one of the first-timers in D3 last night, I wanted to make sure that Vol Jbolaz and Handle weren't talking about me. I think I was clean, but as this was my first foray outside the decidedly un-clean public lobbies, it seems possible that my calibration is off. If no one has made a formal complaint, that's good, but if I was less than I should have been, I want to know. I got so caught-up in the racing last night that I forgot to save any of the replays, so I can't go back and review my own actions, unfortunately.

I understand that confronting people directly about this kind of stuff is frowned upon, but if anyone has any criticism of my driving last night, please PM me. I won't get offended, I promise ;) I just want to improve. And next week I'll save the dang replays.

Save your replays always. Yes,you can go back to see if you did something wrong but mainly go back to see what you did right! Watch your lines,braking,ect. also watch others and see what they do and how they do it.
Replays are vital for learning, thats just me.
 
I hear what you're saying Handlebar. I don't win either, but I've had some of the most epic battles while racing mid pack and further back. That's what I'm here for. I consider the night a success if I've been in some good clean battles, regardless of my finish position. Oh yeah and how much adrenalin is coursing through my body :)

True, two of the tracks didn't have much space to pass. That's where patience and racing experience comes in. We have to realize when it's prudent to make a pass. First question should be, can I pull this off cleanly, if in doubt turn it into a feint and avoid the contact. Ruining someone elses race absolutely guts me and I think it does for most others.

The reason I keep harping on this is to keep everyone aware that bump and grind racing has no place in our league. If nothing's said, that then becomes acceptable and is the norm. None of us wants that.

If the two drivers can't come to a resolution then the stewards will review the incident and make a decision.

I review my own driving all the time. It's a great way to pick up on bad habits and try to correct them. It's also good to watch other drivers, you can get a lot of pointers from them 👍

Ya, I'm really kicking myself for failing to save the replays, if for no other reason than that I never even saw dsgerbc, he was so far ahead the whole time. It would have been nice to see what he was doing :) I definitely won't make that mistake again.
 
I don't think calling people out in public is going to do anything but drive people away. I understand peer pressure, but I'm not sure it'll have a positive affect.

We all know what an 'Open Clean Lobby' is typically like in the public lobbies of GT5, usually a little less than ;) It could very well be possible that new people coming to race believe they're driving clean, because they're comparing their experience with the Open Public Lobbies. We need to make them aware of what we expect, clean, fair racing. I'm not saying all the driving issues revolve around the new people to S.N.A.I.L. we can all be a little better at fair, clean racing.

Keeping this conversation alive is part of the effort 👍


I think this is why we should post up videos publicly. I'm a big fan of transparency, and like Handlebar has posted, a lot of us (myself included) aren't exactly sure where the line is between "dirty" and "rubbin is racing". Personally, there have been a couple times in recent races that I've been the victim of borderline "dirtiness". I didn't protest because I didn't consider the offenses severe enough to warrant it. I didn't even say anything to the offenders because I don't want to be "that guy". Plus, like I said, I'm not really even sure where the line is.

I think if we keep things the way they are, the "slightly dirty" racing won't improve. It seems in the past when someone has driven a little dirty on Sunday night, a few vague comments get thrown out, but unless there is an exceptionally blatant incident, there is no protest. I like that cheeb is posting up OLR reminders each week, but from personal experience in the business world, when a generic memo goes out, those who really need to take it's advice assume it was meant for someone else.

I agree that we shouldn't "call people out", but I think that posting up videos of some of the borderline driving and encouraging open dialogue could be beneficial for everyone. The offenders get timely and non-biased feedback concerning their driving, and we, as a group, get to define "dirty" for all to see.

I'd rather see some non-real, or staged examples that demonstrate the good, the bad, the ugly, and the "that is not the move that thought that move was, my friend.... it was clean because...." kinda moves and explanations.

But still, I need some more seat time. True.

Dude!! That is a stellar idea! I think it would have huge educational benefits. A regular series of "You Make The Call" and an open discussion following. It would really give a lot of us a clearer picture where that fine line is!👍👍

Kronin, no I'm not upset with you.

And I don't want Handlebar to think I'm upset with him. He did take me out in one race, but accidents happen. That doesn't bother me (though I was upset at the time, but that was because I took myself out on an earlier race, so this made my second race of the evening where I was going to finish at the bottom). What bothers me if people consistently being too aggressive and causing accidents, or at the very least slowing everyone else down (and I hope I didn't tell this story already).

To tell a story from a few weeks ago, I was chasing someone down. I was closing the gap between him and me every lap. And there was enough race left that I had a good chance of passing.

The driver behind me was keeping up with me, but never had a good chance to pass. There weren't many good straights or I'd've asked him to bump draft me so we could catch up to the guy in front of me. But, the guy behind me does get on the brakes too late for a corner and dive bombs me. He didn't mean to, and he held off and didn't pass me.

But because he got into me, that slowed me down and I lost all the ground I was making up on the guy in front of me. And that's my point. Even if you don't take a position, you may still cost the other driver a position. Now, in this case, that driver is a fair driver. He doesn't normally dive bomb me like that, I think it was just an honest mistake.

Other drivers build a reputation for themselves of dive bombing too often, of being too aggressive. And yes, if they don't take a position, or they give it back, then there isn't much we can do with the review. But, please... if you find your self tapping the cars infront of you too often, then you are doing it wrong. Back off just a touch.

Also, D3 is probably the division with the most varied skill level. You will have drivers that start there on their way to D1, and drivers, like me, that will probably never get to D2. When you are behind me, don't assume I'm going to take the line that you would've taken. Even if I know the correct way to take that corner, I am likely to take a more conservative line. My goal is to not wreck. If I can stay on the track, I can usually finish mid-pack. I've even won a race in D3. Woot. :)

Also, please make sure the driver list is up to date. Some PSN IDs aren't the same as GTPlanet IDs and I'd hate to have PMs sent to the wrong people.

Yes, this sounds great, on paper. The reality is a different picture, however. If drivers were to "call people out" in a public forum then it will quickly turn into a shouting match. We all know it will, because people will feel the need to defend themselves in the public view & drivers will then "call out" every little thing they find. This is exactly what Zero Doesn't Want to have in the public forum. Remember, he's trying to grow the S.N.A.I.L. and drivers who are "Call People Out" is counter-productive, not only for what Zero is trying to do, but it will make the S.N.A.I.L. like a lot like a bunch of 4 year old girls whining. Will new potential drivers be willing to join a group with posts like that? I know I wouldn't join - too much drama.

*No offense to any 4 year old girls who might be here reading this. 👍 LOL

That's one possibility, but we're all (mostly) adults here. We've had heated yet civil discussions in this thread in the past.

Consider this scenario:
There's an incident between me and you in a race. You send me a PM stating such. I respond defending myself. This could dissolve into a shouting match since we both think we're right.

But if we post a video to the thread inviting comments, and everyone agrees with you, then I realize I'm the big tool and maybe others can learn from it, too.

And I think if the attitude of the posts is more of "Let's talk about what went wrong here" and not "Look at Diabolic* the filthy mcnasty Dive Bomber!!" then it could be a good learning tool. :)

I mean, are we trying to promote clean racing or spare people's feelings?
