Where is the live stream for Spa?

I test drove a Boxster S today - WOW!! The salesman gave me the keys, and said "Don't be gone too long, less than 30 minutes or so, OK?" and let me go on my own. Performance... in spades. It made me totally forget about the pleasant but not shouty TR6/MGB's I'd been trying out.

I'm still planning on testing out a 350Z (based on many comments from folks here in the past), and I'll try an S2000 and a Z4 or Z4 M Roadster as well. Those are my 'short list' of cars I am considering - usually 10 years old or less. The Mrs. didn't like 'track only' cars, and I was honest with myself about how much I wanted to fiddle with the much more stylish, but older cars - not as much as they'd need.

The garage cleaning should be done Sunday. I wish I had taken before/after pics.

I may find a 'special car' on Monday, but since I'm going to Oregon on Tuesday, my final sprint to the 'Finally, NOT a Minivan!' will likely happen a week later when I get back. Shortly followed by a Track Day for Dad at Summit Point, WV. 👍 This has been a LOOOOONG time coming. So happy it is finally coming to fruition. Thanks to many for the advice in the past.

Taking wife out to nice dinner since she still puts up with me.
Like you I am after a fun car. Unlike you my sights are a bit lower. Been looking at Focus SVT 170's. Quite fun for $5k. Some time ago I figured that I would always rather have multiple cars than one really nice car so whatever I get will just be the first of my planned garage. It is my real life version of the DTC. One FF, one FR one 4wd one MR/RR. I plan on spending $5k a year for until I can no longer drive. Once I have my base 4 cars I will start upgrading as the whim takes me.

Good luck on your purchase. The Boxster S and the E46 M3 have to be two of the greatest performance cars you can find for the money right now.

The M cars are amazing, but, for me... Fun?... Not as much as I should wish.

My dad has always been a car guy. More than I understood growing up. I learned to drive regularly on an 81 GTI, and at one point, he had 3 Bimmers in the 80/90's - 500-somethings at the same time.

They are brilliant cars, but I guess they are, for me, tools I can appreciate, but I have not been viscerally engaged by their performance.

Still have not tried Dad's newest car, or the Z4 M Roadster, so I am keeping seasoning handy in case I eat my own words.

I have a 350z and a brz and I have to say as far as fun factor goes stock I'd pick the brz. Outright speed the 350z is faster but when got take it to the track it overheats the engine brakes and clutch. The stick diff sucks. If you are going to mod it then it might not be that bad but if not the brz is my pick. I'm out at streets of willow right now with the brz and I just turn lap after lap with no problems and it doesn't overheat. Even the stock brakes aren't too bad. It's not the fastest car but it's a blast.

The driver's list has been updated and is ready to go for Sunday night racing.

I will not be around all day tomorrow as I will be trying to keep cool while playing a softball tournament. If you need anything from me tomorrow, try and hunt down DragonWhisky.

Please take my name off the list as I won't be joining your organization after all. I have already contacted @zer05ive regarding the situation that led me to this decision. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Solid shopping list no doubt, couple comments though. 350? If you're looking at a Z, the 370 is just a little bit better in every way. Boxter? Cayman is about the best driver car for the money out there unless you're really after a convertible. I'd take an s2k over a boxter any day for a pure sports car experience, 2nd in my mind to a used Cayman for best drivers car under 30k.

Also, keep in mind the restrictions on convertibles for track days, usually need a hard top or roll bar.

And to finish my slightly drunk ramblings, if u do a track day at Summit, let me know. Was there a few weeks back in the 370 at it was a great track, would love to do another and I'll have an exhaust on her this time so I can actually hear the engine! Sad to say, but the 370Z must be the only car that actually sounds better in GT6 than real life ;)

I think he may be price limited.

Cayman prices are quite a bit higher than older Boxter S models. S2k and 350z cars can be had cheaply as well.

My wife likes the Cayman more than the Boxster. On the upside, when she likes something, my budget gets more 'flexible' than before...👍 On the flip side, I'm much more interested in a convertible than a coupe.

I am not looking at new, probably in the 5-10 year range, and I'm more in the $20k range, but my wife is starting to really take a shine to the 911's over the Boxster and Cayman. So far, the Carrera 4S is her fave, so the budget may get bumped quite a bit for that. That would probably fall into the 10-15 year range, I'm not sure yet I know enough about which specific models to look for in 911s, so I'm in the process of learning some of the "make sure you do / don't...." tips. ;)

I'm wrestling with the IMS issue in the Boxsters - even with the chance being very low (looking for the 3.2 engine, manual transmission, not ultra-low mileage seems to be the school of thought to reduce the incidence). The idea of getting a 'new to me' car and then possibly know that the engine may go Kablooey, and then take a ton of money to replace... Makes me a bit concerned. :dunce: Definitely looking at 2003 or newer for the glass rearview.

Not many BRZs are available to even test around here. The Toyota guy said the 370's haven't come down to the 20k range yet, but I hadn't looked at them yet. I will probably do more reading/researching while I'm visiting my parents, then shop in earnest in less than 2 weeks. Thanks for the skinny on the BRZ, @hillracing - I recalled you liked the 350Z in the past.

  1. Functional factory or “pop-up” roll bars are acceptable such as Porsche Boxster or BMW Z3 with owners manual that confirms that they are “ROLLOVER PROTECTION” not “Style” bars. Honda S2000, Dodge Viper, Chevrolet Corvette, and Mazda MX5 convertibles and some other convertibles, not listed, are required to have an aftermarket ROLL Bar.
I had thought an attachable hardtop would count, but the track makes it clear that isn't rollover protection. Back to reading up on 911 buying guides, then checking prices, etc. :gtpflag:

As far as longevity goes, convertibles are going to have issues over time. Here in Florida we had to replace several convertibles a month because people didn't take care of them. The drainage holes would get clogged with leaves and the overflow water would get into the cabin and under the driver seat...which would ruin the electronic immobilizer under the seat. This happened more than I care to admit...customers would think it was a warranty issue and I would have to explain that you can't leave your car parked under the tree forever without cleaning out the drainage channels.

Those tops can rip, fade, dry out and are expensive to replace. Do NOT get a Boxster without a glass rear window. Earlier models had a cheap plastic window.

Looks like you are still all over the place with your thoughts though ;) The IMS issue was more common on early Boxsters. But still less than 5% were affected...the problem just seemed more common because a ton more Boxsters were sold than anything else. Newer 996, 997, Boxsters and Cayman seal failures are rare, less than 2% or so.

Don't worry too much about it. Just stay away from the early Boxsters and you're fine.

C4 and C2 911s are great cars. A little more roomy than the Cayman/Boxster duo.

I see you are educating yourself, but feel free to ask me any inside questions. I worked at a Porsche dealer in service for a while. I drove a few at Sebring on test drives and knew lots of guys who owned them while I was in the PCA because I attended a lot of gatherings in my 911 and later 944S2.

Anyways...whatever you get, you will be happy. 370Zs here in Florida are coming down to $15k or so for early models. If I had money right now I'd be hard pressed not to get one ;)

I just created a practice room, hope not been breaking the rules

Short notice, but I won't be racing in d6 tonight. My ps3 crashed "again" and I've lost all my gt6 data. So I'm starting from scratch again...so frustrating!!!

Gonna chill right now and head out on a mountain bike ride and relax!!!
Good luck to everyone tonight, maybe I'll stop bye and watch a race or two.

Ouch! You did back up your data, right?

That sucks man :grumpy:

i lied the gtr feels great on Suzuka. i got a 2:02.xxx and i can cut a lil more time off
The trick is running with other cars. It seems as though there are very few passing zones other than the two straights; and that is only if you get a great exit. It will take super concentration too due to the opportunities of racing through the esses side by side. This week will show our true racecraft. Suzuka and Silverstone are the tests.
Of course this is simply my $0.02. I had a chance to contribute a post on this rare occasion. Lol.
