Division 7 Race Report

Great night of racing from all drivers. Congratulations to all of the winners. No connection issues in the room or the grid lock glitch. Just one driver had a problem with his router. Thank you everyone for participation in SNAIL and for all the people in charge, data recorders/uploaders, stewards, replay watchers for your work in SNAIL.

Race hard, Race clean, Race SNAIL :gtpflag: 👍
Such a great night in D4 tonight, absolutely well done by all even with the ussaul pile up, whitch I only saw one.
Kuddoes to @Wolfsatz and @Wardenclyffe for being so on it, professional and making it smooth!
Great job guys and great job to all of D4!
Scoring and votes for D5 are entered in the Directors Doc. Congrats to @CoachMK21 (yup, that's me) for the overall win, even though I didn't get a race win. Every now and then, even a blind squirrel finds a nut. The top 4 were within 4 points. Great job to everyone!
Thanks @chatva ...

Voting and scores have been inputted

Congrats to @gotdirt410sp for the preliminary win!

Good racing by all D4!
Scores and votes for D2 are in and replays are uploading. Had a small group tonight, but some very close and competitive racing. So close that the fastest lap in the 2nd race @ Monza was shared by 2 people, down to the thousandths of a second! Fastest lap by each racer in the final race was separated by less than half a second. Congrats to @pakicote for his first win in his first SNAIL weekend! 👍
Great racing in D6 tonight!
It's great to hear about all the great racing tonight! Reminds us of why we're all here in the first place. Huge shoutout to all the Team SNAIL guys who put in the thankless behind-the-scenes effort to make it all happen!

I don't know! My speed test says I am running at the speed the internet company says I should have. The only thing that changed was I was promoted to D6. But I am the only one with problems, so I don't know what to do.

Sounds abit like a problem i have with a specific users connections ...
Thankfully hes not in my division but i noticed when some people have practice rooms open and this person joins i am heavily lagging all over the place ... my car and everybody elses car ....however everybody else seem to just be fine, the moment he leaves/looses connection however everything is back to normal ... i even switched rooms once and after like 30 minutes that person coincidently came to the same room ... the moment it said xxx joined the room everything started to lagg again ... when he left it was back to normal.

So it looks like his and my connection just doesnt play well together for whatever reason, maybe you have a guy like that in your division aswell?

D8 Replays are Up to the Loaded..! 👍

Started with 6 last week, ended with 4..
Started with 5 this week, ended with 4..? Cmon back to D8 @McTrucker .! At least you might be able to race?? And we might finish a night with more than 4!! Hopefully some of our peeps strat showing up soon? Still had fun!! I'm game to run heads up..!!! :P

Thats will test the line speed try borrow a router and test it

@Schmiggz ....maybe a new name for you?

Sometimes isn't much this season so far :) Flames fan aren't ya? NHL.com did a poll 2 weeks into the season, asking which surprisingly good start were you most surprised with. Flames had a .500 record and were on there. Not very high expectations from the hockey world :P

In all honesty though, they have had a great start. Tied right now for 3rd in the west with us.
Go Flames.... Go Paul Byron, my Godson.

Division 5 replays are up... Kind of. I put them in the open November folder. I do not have access to the other November folder.
They don't need to go in the monthly folders. Put them in the parent divisional folder.

I am going to bring up the controller issue again. I watched one of the races from many other peoples cars. You can tell right off who is racing with a controller, their cars are all over the track and the control that is handed to them because of the supposed "inferior controller", especially on corners is blatantly apparent. Before anyone bites my head off about this, watch the replays. With a wheel, I have to take the right lines on a racetrack to carry speed, i have to be smooth to be competitive. Controller guys seem to be able to drive with what looks like reckless abandon and still carry speed. Watch some of the lines these guys take through corners....... There is no way they should be able to carry speed when their car is all over the place and nowhere near the apex. There are some drivers in Snail on top or very near the top that wouldn't be there if they were on wheels. This is not a dis to the guys, it is what it is. Wheels are expensive, but offer so much to the realism of the "game". Plus it puts you on the same playing field as the rest of the guys. I can't be the only one to notice this, maybe it's sour grapes.......not. A wheels only series, future, maybe

Mike..
I agree with you and I watched the same many times as I take pictures. But in reality, just as some track controllers may have a slight advantage, there are some tracks which wheels have it best. usually it evens out.

Since they are part of the game and not banned, not much you can do other than to race and beat them clean.

Sorry Wolfy, this was in response to Mike L.

After your last post though I did a little comparison. After about 20 laps on each of the tracks this week, I was running almost identical speeds. In part, I think you have some valid points.

1. I didn't notice much difference in the cars behavior just running laps by myself.
2. The biggest difference was when other cars joined the mix. With the controller, it gets twitchy fast, meaning the car moves around way more than the wheel but still maintains the same speed as the other cars.
3. Way, Way, Waaaayyyyyyy more tire squeal from the controllers. Which didn't make sense if more squeal means more lateral and less linear progression going through turns...in general.
4. Big difference in braking zones. Much later with the controller, but also much slower from entry to apex.
5. I seemed to struggle with the long sweepers on AH and the drifting elevation changes on SS route5 with the controller.

The wheel
1. Relative smoother is quicker with the wheel. As I smoothed both the controller and wheel out, the wheel was actually quicker.

2. The wheel will get faster in turns if the tires stay silent. My good friend @aerolite pointed this out which I had to investigate further as the weekend unfolded. The controller seemed to kill to much speed to get the tires quieted down.

3. Elevation changes have a different feel in the wheel due to the amount of loading and unloading around the radius of the wheel. It adds an element of rotational control like a real car.

4. Perhaps the biggest difference is the effect of throttle and brake steering. The wheel gets the added benefit of the brake and throttle response feedback. Once you get a wheel car online, I felt like I could control the brake / throttle way better than compared to the controller.

The wheel is all about being fast smooth compared to the controller being a bit more computational feeling. What I mean is the controller seems to be more straight line biased then allowing the PS to convert the input to radius. The wheel on the other hand, once you find the line, it's just a matter of continual increase or decrease in pressure.

But remember, this is coming from a guy that measures human performance and converts it to all the "sciencey" stuff. So take it for what it is. I'm not an engineer or a computer science major so please don't fault me for that. I don't need to know the inner functions and mechanics of the two. I just wanted to see how the two actually compared for me personally and if I can exploit any weakness in one over the other....within the rules of course.

Soo, Everyone, don't take this as an attack on your choice of controller or wheel. It's just what I noticed while searching for a little more speed.

I may do these little comparisons each week.

On another, less serious note. When a few of us get together in here and do our little desert race / big air shenanigans on the weekends, the wheel guys have a huge advantage at speed over dumb rough terrain.

NOTE: Sorry D8 guys, you were unknowingly part of the little experiment this weekend.
But I promise to share my info. with you from here on out.

Mike,
I race a controller and have found that yes controllers seem to change direction quicker...they also are harder to modulate steering input as well. However I believe what you are seeing is the replay program isn't as defined for the second party replay as is for the driver, regardless of wheel or controller. Seems quirky for all 2nd party replays.
