@Die_Birdy_Die You're right. While the esport isn't brand new, it's now moving out of its infancy and becoming something more than just a niche market that those not participating can watch. Whether it be internet based broadcasts or mainstream media conduits. Having an audience watching will bring advertising dollars to the event(s) and that's where the real money is and what I would bet GTSport is aiming for.
@singlepaddy Yes. GTSport is reported to have a single player aspect but it's unlikely to be very robust in nature. Using rFactor 2's model, you can get the game for relatively cheap, $24.99, and play offline. I haven't played it but if it's anything near or better than iRacing's fully subscription based sim, the single player mode will be quick and easy and you'll spend all kinds of money and time tweaking game and hardware settings to get the most out of the experience. For rFactor at least, you can go one of two ways for online play. Lifetime will cost you $85 and an annual will run you $12. That's if you have the PC hardware in place to run it. If you don't you can figure another $800.00-$1000.00 to put together a machine.
The console sims have the benefit of holding down hardware costs to a degree and taking that variable out of the equation so may still be the better option for the general gaming public versus the wide open arena that is the PC market.
Other console sims like pCars and AC are both too complex yet starved for features for the casual player.
Yeah, SNAIL is an "eLeague" but it's never been for profit. It's diametrically opposed to the direction GT and most other sims are headed. Pretty sure just having to have the PS+ membership for online play will reduce the membership here, unless a sim comes out, whether GTSport or otherwise, that just blows everyone away and is functionally suitable for the league to maintain its core themes and values.
SNAIL may have to evolve into something that may end up vastly different from what it's grown into over that last 5 years. How many would pay, above what you pay currently, to race in SNAIL on a weekly basis? Even if all it cost was a buck a week, it'll add up on top of whatever the "sanctioning" body that provides the platform charges for the privilege. With money involved, service level expectations change. While it might still be the cheapest racing (console based sim) a person can get, the level of investment is a matter of financial perspective.
