Something else to think about is the SNAIL population as a whole when it comes to different skill levels and people feeling they are outclassed.

Lets say out of the current driver list theres only 10 of us that make up the 1 and only division that races in SNAIL. Theres going to be huge skill gaps in that division and only just a few people will have a shot at winning the night. The others will know they are outmatched, get frustrated since they know they cant win and eventually quit.

Now lets say theres 100 people that race on Sunday spread across multiple divisions. The skill gaps will now be fair and the racing will be much more competitive since its a much more level playing field with those numbers.

Last Sunday we had just under 40 people race which is still a great number of people. But imagine if we had 8 or 9 divisions like there once was before I ever joined and there were just under 100 people that raced.

If we all pitched in a little to try and make an effort to recruit new (and old) snails, everyone would benefit from it. Are you hosting a practice lobby? Put snailracing.org in the lobby title. Doing sport races? Put your greeting and end of race text message as "snailracing.org clean spec league" or something along those lines. Its all about exposure and getting the word out. We are unique in that we have our own website and the only racing league to have its own forum here on GTP. Lets use it to our advantage. Think about how many different players you come across in Sport mode lobbies. A few of them are bound to wonder what snailracing is and since Sport races use a lot of one-makes like we do, a few of them will probably show interest in joining.

Just 2 weeks ago I saw a comment posted on one of my Sunday YouTube streams. They asked how do they go about joining and I gave them instructions. It was @Hanable and he now races with us in D1. And thats basically how I found SNAIL, I came across @MSgtGunny 's stream one night on twitch and here I am.

TLDR: the more people in SNAIL = better recipe for tighter competition

Please do not include pictures in your suggestion post, they make for extra work when quoting and presenting the selections as a group in one post.
None of the prize suggestion posts have any pictures included.

just doesn't get it and, truth be told, hasn't ever really gotten anything.

The insults will have to be more rude than that to hurt my feelings. You never seem to remember the good times.

Speed is not the only thing that makes you win on a Sunday night. You can be fast as heck but if you don't stay on the track you are not going to be very successful. I'm going to take myself as an example. My laptimes are nowhere near the fast guys in D2 however in the April season I have a win, a second, a third and a fourth place overall (that's hitting for the cycle!)

My secret? I try and limit my mistakes on track. "Fast-ish" and consistency works much better than really fast + gravel pit & wall.

Practice doesn't make you perfect but it helps keeping you on track.

I didn’t think when I was posting earlier about how harsh my post may have come across. Where I am having fun I’m also a competitor and so that drives me to success. I realize not all people are the same here and I apologize for anything that may have come across wrong.

Your last three suggestions have included a picture or a video which basically shows up as a picture. If you're attempting to use the spoiler to hide them, you're not doing it correctly.

Here, here, and here.

As for the second part. It's wasn't an insult, just an observation based on past and present behavior.

I can't imagine anyone here will recall me, but you never know. I stopped playing so long ago, but nostalgia has gotten the best of me.

Miss racing. I recall SNAIL before it was SNAIL. I recall ZERO, Cheeb, myself and a few select others tossing racing slicks on cars and having fun for a couple hours. I'd say I'm surprised it's still going, but I'm not. With how popular this league is still, I'm betting this post will be buried and forgotten. BUT, I did want to say thank you to those who where happy to see my sign in and sad to hear I was leaving.

Since, I've been divorced, remarried and now have 2 kids and another on the way!
I'm a full time Bicycle Mechanic (I know they only have 2 wheels) and run the online and eBay sales for the shops I work for. :)

I'll always remember asking and answering SNAIL questions. I'll remember members thinking I was from another planet.
That I was a Cyborg or must have been for using the D-Pad and automatic transmission from my couch in D1 races. :D

I was called many things on the track and through this forum and while each may have been true in some fashion, only one is 100% certain...

I'm Diabolic!
It's always great to hear from our OG cyborg! Congrats on the kiddos!

Did you just randomly think about us, or did all of the posts about changing the league's start time trigger your dead horse alarm? This thread now has almost 120K posts, but the dead horse post is still one of my all time favorites

I'm using Mansell's infamous Red 5 that won him the 93 CART Season as a rook!

Maybe there are people who get frustrated or give up when faced with opponents of higher skill. Personally I've found that the challenge of catching up to those that are faster than I accelerates my own growth.

I realize your post is about growing SNAIL, IMO there are two key aspects: 1) recruit new members (as you suggested) 2) keep members.

So here's my take on keeping members:
1) make SNAIL about learning and sharpening racecraft - winning is an indication you're getting there, but what's important is the learning process and growing your racecraft both technically and mentally
2) mentor people coming up through the ranks - I think this should be something that faster drivers within each division should actively do.
3) set expectations early on. I think SNAIL already does a good job here with the "original post" and "SNAIL OLR" maybe some additional advice on focus of racecraft growth may further help.

IMO racing is is not just about car control, but also about being mentally prepared. I view practice and races as a way of growing mental capacity to remain focused, make every corner count, look ahead, remain calm (esp after an incident). I think we've all had the experience of "being in the zone", where we're in a state of mind where nothing else exists except the track ahead of us, and the singular purpose to drive that next section fast and flawless while at the absolute limit. Growing the mental ability to be in this state at will (not just when you're following your rival, not just after you've made a mistake and need to catch up, not just when you have "the fast guy" nipping at your heels) is a key growth area - at least in my case.

I think the value that SNAIL provides is a "safe environment" in which to grow - where you're not distracted by malicious drivers.

In the years i have raced in Snail found out some are faster than me and i am faster than others or the same level of competitiveness where each other pass as clean as possible besides a few scrapes here and there. I always figured i would not get up to the highest division since i am more a controller than steering wheel user. Did try a couple steering wheels but could never get the hang of it compared to using a controller all the way back to the first Nintendo with Super Mario Bros. Controller with GT1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Prologue, 5, 6 and GT Sport. Whichever division i am placed in always feel comfortable in racing with others. Not just practice nights but when i been racing in the official Sunday night rooms where another driver will be faster than me, i was taught the faster racing lines to become faster over the years just by following behind or vice versa where i remember @Alexrider007 telling me that he learned to be faster in his lines from following behind me so in effect this league promotes organizational skills, very clean racing and yes their will be scrapes here and there in racing.

I like practice because i can learn from the much faster drivers from the upper two divisions just by following behind to see the faster driving line and others can learn from my fast lines in the bottom two divisions and we just learn all from each other. This league has taught me a comradery or friendship with others online from across all different countries that i always been happy to be a part of. We have seen new drivers come and go, old drivers from the past come and go. Always a blast no matter which division i am placed in.

Just noticed that your posts end with a statement about being a SNAIL since 2012 and the comment before that from ZERO brought a smile to my face.

LOL

(I'll stop interfering in the thread now)

Yeah buddy. If anyone ever want to go on a LONG strange trip, click the link in my signature and just start reading. That will give you a glimpse into the early days of SNAIL. This @diabolicwyvern guy was pretty fast.

Zero, must have been the dead horse alarm! I started reading the last few pages and it seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. You could copy and paste the conversations we were having with GT5 and division placement right into here!
So that i wouldnt lose litetally 4000 hours and miss bits of my first kiddo growing up, I told my wife I wouldnt get GT6. Competing with wheel users and manual transmissions for a d-pad/auto guy like myself meant having a time trial line I could run no matter my track positioning and I spent hours ghost lapping to improve tenths of a second. (This was in early 2014 when we were going to start trying for a kid - 6 months before moving the league from 5 to 6, I realized how far behind id be from what i was and I just decided to not play at all. To that end I've never played GT Sport or even seen footage of it. Does Nic-kl still race? I could look it up but I'm on my phone and crucially.. lazy. I reckon he spent just as much time ghost lapping for every sectors hidden second that I did!

Does Nic-kl still race?

Yep he raced with us on Sunday

I reckon he spent just as much time ghost lapping for every sectors hidden second that I did!

Nick takes ghost lapping to a whole new level

I ran over 10 000 laps on the Nordschleife since I got Gran Turismo 4, but I have yet to run a fast and clean lap in total darkness. That will be my personnal challenge for the new year. I can only do half the track without issues at the moment. ;)

Here's a sample..

I visited EXR folks in Vegas yesterday to try out the Ferrari 488 and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS

My lap times were not blistering, but I had a blast. It is a little challenging to learn a track while you have never been in a fast car and you have 5 or 7 laps to do it in. Just as you start to get the hang of it and get the feel where you can push, it's over. Actually I got to the point where I can feel the driving aids are slowing me down.

But, after all is said and done.... PCars 2 and GTS sucks in comparison with real life.... Those cars have 10 times more grip that what it feels like in the games. Maybe the driver aids were contributing to the stability, but I could not throw a car around in the games like I did on the the track.

I had one scary moment ln the Ferrari though when I approached turn 1 and when I lifted of the gas to press the brake for turn 1, my shoe got stuck under the brake pedal and I ran a bit off track - luckily not into the sand pit. The instructor was a bit scared. Luckily he has a brake pedal on his side. (My initial plan was to drive with left foot braking, but the pedals are too close to each other and too far over to the right, which makes it impossible if you have no 13 shoes)

The Porsche was slower on the straights, but faster in the corners for an overall faster lap time. I went first in the Ferrari. I had more fun in the Ferrari, but I think the instructor was in the Ferrari was better.

If anyone of you plan to visit them, I'll be happy to give a few tips.

(I may post this in the other forums too, so be patient if you see this more than once)

I think they make the cars on games extremly hard to drive is to keep us interested. We judge sims based on how hard the cars are to drive and not reality considering none of us has the cash for a gran turismo style garage of 500 cars for reference.
