Regarding the use of shifters, just be mindful, that a certain amount of skill is required to achieve optimal and consistent times. One missed upshift or downshift, can spell plenty of lost positions. The only gripe I have is that the game allows h pattern upshifts, and then allows you too paddle down shift. I would prefer to see it locked to one or the other as they do in Assetto Corsa. If your running h pattern shifter, that is the setting it locks and vice versa. On that note, GTS is very tough to get perfectly timed up and downshifts without missing a gear. Anyone using the shifter, may gain an advantage, but it does come with it's own risk. Kudos to the guys that have mastered it.
This is why I didn't bother getting a shifter when I upgraded my wheel. With the way I shift, I would miss too many gears.
