When the new Ford Expedition came out, Ford called it "an exercise in quality." Just about every single new Expedition I see that is not newly-washed has a huge amount of brake dust on the two front wheels, and none on the rear wheels. I've never seen something this localised to one vehicle before, and especially with such a high rate of occurrence. Is massive amounts of brake dust on wheels normal?

But in a big heavy vehicle like that, it's normal for the brakes to be seriously hammered on the front, especially given that most of them will be autos, and therefore spending their lives with the brakes jammed on. Add to that the fact that it probably takes drivers a while to come to terms with the sheer bulk of them, and you can see a lot of panic-braking going on. Finally, the fact that they've got blancmange for suspension will mean that the brake bias is hugely toward the front.

I would have thought, anyway.

Our MPV gets a fair amount of brake dust on the fronts...I think it has to do with more braking going to the front, and usage/conditions/materials. Also some wheels flow air outward through the wheels and so brake dust collects on the outside.

Yeah, but we've got larger vehicles for sale in this country (remember, the Ford Excursion is 20 feet long - a friend of mine just got one and cannot make a U-turn without having to back up at least twice) and I can't say that I see the same problem with them. But you're probably right in the end - I hope so, for Ford's sake.

The front wheels on my dad's 328i are always covered in brake dust. What's weird about that, though, is the fact that he washes his car 3, or 4, times each week.:odd:

Fairly hard. It's one of his "garage ornaments," but he still drives it hard when he drives it. He drives about 110-120ish just on his way to work(takes an hour doing the limit). He's always flying up on people's asses, and slowing down late. I guess that's why, but still... I do that **** all the time in my car(s), and my front wheels only get covered in brake dust when I don't wash the car for months at a time. Damn near every 3 series I see has brake dust covering the front wheels. Around here, at least.

Hardly any dust/dirt.

I used to have a BMW 540i, and I didn't drive it very hard, and the wheels still got covered in brake dust within 2-3 days. I only cleaned them every Sunday, so it looked like the wheels came in black when the weekend came. I think it is because the brakes on BMW's are not ceramic, so they are higher-performance, but they also spew black crap everywhere.
