Last weekend, someone put in a winning bid of $2 million for the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe at the Naples Winter Wine Festival's annual auction. This makes it the most ever paid for a new car, at least in North America.

The new Phantom was just introduced last month at the 2007 International Auto Show in Detroit.

Fortunately $1.6 million of that goes to the Naples Children and Education Foundation. 👍

$2,000,000USD is far less that the Veyron convertible will cost standard. At least it is if you convert the Brtish price into American dollars anyway.

Is this considered a production car? Because I know that the Mercedes CLK-GTR is the most expensive production car ever at around $1.6m.

Far less? Last report I heard was that VW estimated that the targa version from Webasto was going to be priced at about $1.9 million US, and wont be available until 2008. I don't really follow Veyron news so I could have easily missed any official updates. So what is the official asking price and street date now? Also have they really scrapped the Targa version in favor of a true convertible? I wouldn't think it possible to do that from an engineering standpoint, not without a major design change.

Yes, it is a production car, and the record as reported on was for how much was actually paid (in the US) for a new production car, not how much it is listed at... which in this case was far more than the actual listed price... inspired by charity I hope, but likely the bragging rights on being the first owner played a role as well. ;)

I wasn't sure what the US price was, but I heared that the UK price is closer to £1.3 million, which is over $2.5 million USD. I meant the targa one when I said convertible though.

Correction, I think it was unless it actually costs more than a Veyron.

The CLK GTR Roadster was considered the World's Most Expensive Lemon though.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is the new "convertible" for the Phantom, and will be entering production soon. However, I doubt the Phantom Drophead will be worth even $1 million MSRP as I think the Phantom now is only just over $550,000.

It did, even when you don't account for inflation:

$1,573,000 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Road Car
$1,440,800 2006 Bugati Veyron

Of course in today's market and accountng for inflation, the list price of the CLK GTR would range between $1.9 - $2.4 million based on the CPI and GDP index.

The 2008 Phantom Drophead Coupe's base price is currently $407,000. As I said, $1.6 million went to charity.

Ah, ok. I didn't realize Phantoms were so "cheap". So, this keeps the Phantom Drophead Coupe from having the most expensive production car record.

What about the various converted Porsche 962s? I believe the Dauer and the Schuppan were both very close to 1.5 million when new, and almost certainly would be more expensive when inflation adjusted.

It might be a stretch to consider converted race cars from privateers/tuners as "production cars".

If anything, one might consider Ferrari's 2005 FXX (Maserati MC12 Corsa) as a possible contender, and sold for close to $2 million ($1.5 million EUR).

I understand that, but the CLK-GTR itself was not far short of that very same thing (especially considering they were all built after the race car was), nor were there that many more of them built than the Duaer and Schuppan's.

They arn't classed as production cars, there's been I think 11 Dauer 962's made, and even less Schuppans.
