Honestly, that could be one of the best looking sedans I've ever seen. No joke. I love the new look of the Legacy, and this is just takes that look to a better place. I love the front, I love the back, the interior looks great. Any word on power output???

It looks nice, but what does B4 mean?
The Legacy B4 models are basically the "STi" version. They don't actually make an STi version of the Legacy, so this model is the top performance model. The older body style Legacy had an "S401 STi-Version" sold, but it wasn't really and STi car. It was built how most STi cars are built, but wasn't actually labeled an "STi" car. It was the "Legacy S401" by name. Close, but not really. I'm not sure what the significance is of "B4" though. But, the "B4" model is always the top Legacy.

I really like the look of the new legacy, This is a nice improvement on it. Hope it comes to the US in some form, but I doubt it.

Cool. Thanks for the info. 260 horsepower from what, a turbo 4?

The regular legacy has either a 2.5L turbo or a 3.0L v6. It's most likely a tweek of one of them.
It actually is using the 2.0L EJ20. The 2.5L EJ257 that we get here in the STi, Legacy, and Forrester XT isn't used in Japan. And, I also made an error in my earlier post. Its not the "B4" thats the top Legacy. Thats just the sporty Legacy, like the GT we get here. They have many versions of the B4. They have the B4 3.0R, which uses a spec'd up version of the flat-6 like we get here in the Outback. Its the "Blitzen" model which is always the sporty, tuned up Legacy. I wasn't really thinking, my bad. Either way, this car is using a 2.0L EJ20 like the Impreza, and should be the top Legacy.

I thought inline engines meant the cylinders all moved on the same plane, which would logically make boxer engines a type of inline engine.

Inline engines, all the cylinders move the same direction, like an M3. Flat, or horizontally opposed, engines have half going one direction, and half the other way, like a Suby or Porsche. Yes, they are on the same plane, but they move in opposite directions. Hence the "horizintally opposed" name.

b4 could mean boxer 4...but if it has a B6, then that b4 theory just went out the window.

See, like he said, it doesn't add up. They have a "B4 3.0R" with the 3.0L flat-6 in it. I originally thought that back in the day, but they've used a 6 for some time. Could be something to do with the 4-doors. Who knows.

just did a babelfish translation of the .pdf specs.

and guess what? it DOES have a 4 cylinder.

You must have missed my post earlier (post #15). We already know that. We were trying to figure out what "B4" stood for. You said maybe "B4" stood for "Boxer-4" which sounds good in theory. But, as I just said before this post, they also have a Legacy B4 3.0R which has the 3.0L flat-6 in it. So, the B4 thing obviously stands for something else that we don't know yet.

The B stands for the boxer engine, and the 4 stands for the 4WD.

Also I dont quite get the specks of this car. Sure all B4 blitzen models have had 260 hp but I think it time for a change. The B4 3.0R has a flat six that produces 250 hp, and the lagacy's performance version produces 260? Sure the EJ20 would be much lighter than the 3.0 six, which is annother benifit to performance, But only ten more HP? Considering that the Imprezas version of the EJ20 is making some 300 HP, I think this version should make at least 280. But thats just me.

I doubt that. No offense, but if that were the case, every single Subaru would be called a "B4" model. All they make is horizontally opposed engines in AWD vehicles. Again, sounds good at first, but doesn't add up. I'm still guessing its something to do with it being 4-door. Who knows.

lol. yeah, i posted that for ****s and giggles. but, it was rather spontaneous. i know the 3.0R is/has a 6 cylinder.

here is a rather obscure (sp?) idea...

Blitzen is in the front row of reindeer on santa's sleigh. he was also the lead reindeer until rudolph came around. the front row is also the FOURTH row from the sleigh. hence, B4 (blitzen, 4th row).

Blitzen also means lightning. isnt the speed of light 4.xx * 10^8 m/s??? (i dont know how to write exponents without superscripts. lol)

bah, whatever.

edit: crap...its actually ~3.00 not 4. there goes the speed of light theory.

I got curious about this "B4" thing, so I google searched on Japanese websites regarding the B4 name.

All of the sites I've visited stated what inferno said. "B" is for boxer and 4 for four wheel driving. There were two sites that also noted that "B4" also meant berlinetta - 4 door. Which make sense, because B4 is what Subaru call the sedan version.

This car confuses me - if this is the sporty car, where exactly in the range does the B4 2.0GT and the B4 2.0GT spec.B end up (both of which have 280hp)?

didn't Ferarri have a "Berlinetta Boxer"??? Doesn't sound very original on Suby's part if thats what the b4 really stands for. Berlinetta means small sedan, and wouldn't the 4-door part be contradictory to that?

It's Boxer + 4WD. Load up either GT2 or GT3 for confirmation (I don't remember which).

I'm just guessing, but I think the 1685/1715kg stat is for the wagon, while the 1410/1440 is for the sedan. Strange that the last Blitzen was a 280ps model while this is 260.

I really like the look though, the new Legacy's one nice car.
