Oh no they've started. I was thinking about writing a small article about VAG and their future stupid plans but I might aswell post it here as its relevant and related to this car.
In short vw boss has splitup VAG into 2 groups. One to be more luxury orientated and the other sporty.
In the sporty side is Audi Seat and Lamborghini. So no more platfrom sharing across the VAG board.
Stupidly the volkswagen boss wants to position volkswagen as a BMW rival and audi purely as a BMW rival and so over the next few years VW will get alot more high class models. But yet theyre still releasing small budget like models at the same time and its rubbish marketing. No matter how nice the VW will be no one will pay mercedes money for it. They should just label these high class cars as audis or bentleys.
Here are some of the higher class vehicles theyre planning.
Volkswagen Touareg Sport and pick-up
Land Rover has the Range Rover Sport, BMW is planning the X6... the Touareg Sport is, as its name suggests, a version of the Touareg with more coupe-like styling and a more sporting demeanour, which would fit into the VW Group range between the Touareg itself and the Porsche Cayenne. A Touareg pick-up, for the Yanks, is also said to be on the drawing board.
Volkswagen Passat coupe
Volkswagen's CLS-style GT model, said to have a four-door layout like the M-B. To be positioned between mainstream Passat and Phaeton ranges, featuring the more powerful engines from the Passat range, and to have an innovative rear hatch opening, apparently. Launch at 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show expected, and prices to undercut CLS.
Volkswagen Sfero
The VW end of the now-shelved VW-Maserati crossover collaboration; could still incorporate elements of Maserati RWD transaxle, though an in-house 4MOTION AWD system now more likely.
Volkswagen Concept R
The mid-engined, rear-wheel drive two-seater roadster, as seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show (2003). A top-end sports car for the brand as it aims ever further upmarket.
Volkswagen Coupe
A Corrado-style model on the Coupe-Cabriolet/Beduin platform, an all-out sports coupe to undercut the Porsche Cayman. An entirely different character to the Passat-based luxury GT arriving a year earlier.
Volkswagen Rivo
The "new Scirocco" - a 2+2 on the Jetta platform. Will have an entirely different, more sporting character to the Passat-based luxury GT arriving a year earlier; small rear seats differentiate it from Audi TT. Engines likely to feature include the 250bhp 3.2 V6, the 2.0 FSI and new 1.4 TSI unit at the entry-level.
Volkswagen Phaeton
Volkswagen is determined to stick with the Phaeton programme, but could diversify from saloon-body format: a crossover-style version to rival Mercedes R-Class is possible. Rear-wheel drive and/or four-wheel-drive layout, platform to be shared with the C1, the Bentley (2008) and the Volkswagen version of the Porsche Panamera (2008).
Volkswagen 'CLS'
The Volkswagen version of the four-door Porsche Panamera; to be differentiated much as the Touareg is distinct from the Cayenne. A coupe-style fastback body but an extra pair of doors, possibly rear-hinged, and a full four-seater luxury interior. Volkswagen's answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLS.
I predict that once these cars are released sales figures will be slow and low and after a couple of years be transferred to the Audi name as VAG make record losses. Yet this will only cheapen the audi name as they do it.
No one will see a volkswagen as a high luxury Merc alternative. Volkwagen ofcourse does mean peoples car. As in cheap and cheerful.
