(from Saab Press Release) The Saab Aero X concept harnesses the power of Saab's aviation and Scandinavian roots to make a unique statement in performance car design. Conceived as a study to explore future design directions, its innovative features preview the development of an enhanced design language that will inspire future Saab products.

As you would expect from Saab, this dynamic two-seater sports coupé breaks with automotive design convention both outside and inside.

First, there are no doors…or windshield pillars. That's because the Saab Aero X adopts a cockpit canopy, just as you would see on a jet aircraft. It offers the Aero X pilot full 180 degree vision, and also facilitates entry and exit from its low-slung cabin.

Thrust for the all-wheel-drive Saab Aero X also comes from a powerplant with a difference. The 400 bhp, twin-turbo, BioPower V6 engine is fueled entirely by bioethanol, a sustainable energy source that is kinder to the environment by cutting fossil CO2 emissions. The 'green power' of this advanced engine gives new meaning to the phrase 'performance with responsibility'.

Inside, the Saab Aero X's cockpit also adds a new dimension to clean Scandinavian interior design by completely eliminating conventional dials and buttons. Instead, Saab has applied techniques derived from Swedish glass and precision instrument making, displaying data on glass-like acrylic 'clear zones' in graphic 3-D images.

All exterior and interior lighting is by LED (light-emitting diode), which has given the design team new freedoms to exploit the compact packaging benefits of a technology that will be featured increasingly in future Saab products.

With weight-saving carbon fiber bodywork, a lightweight powertrain, electronically-controlled suspension and all-wheel drive, the Saab Aero X is an exciting driver's car that promises a level of performance to match its looks. Computer simulations anticipate zero to 100 kph in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 kph (limited).

Despite being so tightly driver focused, the Aero X still offers surprising practicality, again, a quality you would expect to find in all Saab designs. That dramatically sculpted tail conceals a useful twin storage facility, with a conventional hatch opening and sliding drawer underneath.

"This study shows how the strength of the Saab brand heritage can inspire bold, innovative design," says Bryan Nesbitt, Executive Director, GM Design Europe. "As we move forward with new Saab product, we will remain focused on carefully cultivating this brand equity in the context of Scandinavian design values."

"This concept shows the exciting possibilities that are open to us as we evolve a more progressive design language for the brand," says Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's Managing Director. "Our designers, engineers and marketers in Sweden are ideally placed to nurture and communicate the unique DNA of the Saab brand. Their work will ensure that future product proposals express core qualities, such as progressive design, sporty performance and emotional functionality, in a way that is specific to Saab."

The Saab Aero X is the latest in series of concepts from Saab, each accentuating different brand qualities. These include the 'four-dimensional' 9X (IAA Frankfurt 2001), the 9-3X Cross-over Coupé (Detroit 2002) and the 9-3 Sport Hatch (IAA Frankfurt 2003).

Hmmm, I like it, especially the front end, which is a masterpiece, IMO. Just one question though; why does the rear end look like the Mitsubishi Concept X's front end?:odd:

Ooh.. I like it. looks pretty sinister. 👍 👍 Saab's been putting out a bunch of great designs lately.

In Saab's long history, they've made some of the ugliest cars I've ever seen. Nothing attractive or alluring has caught my eye from Saab. Not even the "Born from Jets" slogan gets me into Saab. But if ever there was a saving grace, it would be how well Saabs handle.

I know it's just a concept, but I think it looks too much like a Lexus up front (or maybe even a mid-1990s Chrysler Sebring), the side styling looks... well, I'll give it credit. It's not bad. The rear doesn't look too good. Then too, I think Saab's trying too hard marketing their "Born from Jets" deal. For a majority of cars I've seen, aircraft-inspired cars and car designs were never my favorites. We all seen how Subaru killed their Impreza's looks. That Fisker Tramonto (or whatever it is) has that plane design for its grille or whatever, and its looks are my only turnoff. Probably the best aircraft-inspired designs I've seen was American company, Vector Aeromotive. You know, Vector's attempt at creating an American supercar back before 2000.

As far as this concept goes, I'm just not a Saab fan. Never have been. As far as my full approval goes, out of 100% approval I'm giving this concept 45%.

I'm impressed. I miss the red taillight lenses, but I love everything else about this concept. Beautiful.

Very striking, very unmistakable, very good concept. Would it work as a production car? Not without changes, but like a lot of Saab concepts, it's very striking and good looking imo.

That's a pretty good looking Saab.

Do you like Volvo styling?

Poverty
They do???????????? :scared:
Er, yes. Which auto reviews do you read. I've also had a Saab for a couple of weeks, it was a mates but he let me use it while he was away after I had to leave me Ibiza in Spain. It was a 9-3 and it handled well, it felt solid, he's never had any poblems with it, he still has it. They don't get slagged off by the press, they make some of the best gearboxes as well. I quote from TopGear magazine "The new 9-3 is right up there with the BMW 3 series, it doesn't get much better than that", AutoCcar doesn't hold it as high as the 3 seiries but still thinks it's good enough to hold it's own. There's loads of positive comments from Saab owners and from the motoring magazines about Saab's. If you don't like the styling of them, fine, if you've owned one and the car simply isn't for you, fine. But theres no point arguing that they're all out no good when the majority quite clearly say otherwise.

Well I just firguredctheyd be crap because they are owned by....

Just joking.........

I would never by a saab because they depreciate rapidly like a impreza. And I dont fancy the styling. Do know that theyre fast though.

Fair enough, they do cost a bit to own, especially with the depreciation.

Saab makes nice cars?

Have you seen the newest 9-5? Holy hell it's disgusting, revolting, regurgitatorific. As ugly as the Aztek, and I'm not joking.

And where have I seen that kind of fold-up windscreen? Was it the 80s? The 70s maybe? I don't think it worked...

Do I like Volvo styling? I think theirs is pretty nice, ExigeExcel. With the new C90 or whatever it's called, I fell in love at the Volvo section at the 2006 Houston Auto Show. They make very nice, pretty safe autos. I'd say they are my favorite Swedish autos, even though I don't know as much as I'd like to with Koenigsegg. So yeah, count me for Volvo styling.

Because I find Volvo styling to be very, very bland. Yes it's not quite the square edges and boxes of old, but they don't seem that much better to me.

On the other hand Saab styling is sleek IMO, though maybe a little overworked.

I just find it amazing how the styling of Saab and Volvo can divide opinions so extremely.

Wow, you'd be ****ed trying to get out of that car if you rolled it. Although it is quite a nice car!

Heh. Do you enjoy your hands in their current state? If you do, don't go near a 9-3 Viggen .

It certainly does its job as a concept; it gets peoples' attention. But I really doubt something like this would be built for Saab right now. They need to get into the black, and an expensive sports car is not the best way to convince the beancounters. It's good-looking though. As for Saab as a company... I'd much rather them survive under the GM umbrella than Buick... or Saturn. Saab's have always had their own identity, albeit quirky. They just need a company that knows how to help them; GM can't even help itself right now.

The phrase, torque steer is pretty relevent .

Interesting styling.
A tad different then what we're use to from Saab, but if its anything like the rest of their cars, i'm sure it would be a joy to drive. The tach is so "matrix" though, i'd be scared of someone tryin to offer me a blue pill everytime i'm driving it.

Its a... a whore!

Nothing wrong with fwd, it's not like they're built to tear up the Ring, it's not like every car in their class is rwd or 4wd, some are but most arn't. If they handle very well, what difference does it make to you if it's fwd, if you see a fwd car that handles better than a rwd car. Let's say both look the same and go the same in a straight line but on corners the rwd one is poor and the fwd is good and they look the same, same interior ect, everything else is the same, are you telling me you'd take the rwd one because it's rwd? That's just daft. Like I said, feel free to not like a car because you don't like the looks, or it's from a car class you don't like ie I don't much like MPV's or trucks or a number of other big vehicles like thoes. Don't come up with some comment like I don't like it because it's fwd, if it was fwd and handled bad, then you could say you don't like it because it handles bad, but that's not the case, rwd cars handle bad too, so do 4wd cars. Speaking of 4wd, I believe Saab are making some higher performkance cars on the Impreza's 4wd platform.

Very nice looking wagon, but what does that mean?

It's wearing too much makeup around the headlights. They tried to redesign the new front and back to fit the old middle, and it clashes.

I really don't know why they chromed out the front like that.

L4S dont get me wrongI love a powerful FWD car but when its got a long wheelbase and its a heavy car I dont really fancy it.
