General Motors has taken the wraps off the freshened 2008 Cadillac STS sedan, which features a new standard 298-horsepower V6 engine, a host of new technologies, and significant interior improvements.

Up front, the dual-textured, multi-faceted grille first seen on the Sixteen concept and incorporated on both the Escalade and soon-to-be-launched 2008 CTS, has been adapted to the STS. Vertically stacked headlamps with large, dual 70mm projector lenses are encased in an aluminized, single-piece bezel. High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps are now available on V6 models.

Also available on V-6 models for the first time are Intellibeam headlamps. The headlamps automatically switch gradually from high beam to low beam when vehicles approach or the vehicle is approaching taillamps. The lower front fascia is a new design, with a new intake and grille patterned after current Cadillac 'V' cues. New, narrower side marker lamps are added.

Similarly, side air extractors, again inspired by the Sixteen and Escalade, are now incorporated in the front fenders of the STS.

New styling touches also include chrome-plated door handles and new lower rocker moldings that blend into the lower line of the vehicle for more presence and refinement.

At the rear, the new fascia is now body-color, and is highlighted with the addition of polished, aluminum three-inch exhaust tips.

New, polished 18-inch by 8-inch aluminum 14-spoke wheels are available. For these available wheels, Michelin W-rated, 235/50R18 tires are used up front, and the rear wheels are fitted with 255/45R18 all-season radials.

Brembo brakes with four-piston calipers provide improved braking, with front rotors measuring 14-inch by 1.2-inch (355mm x 32mm) coupled with 14.4-inch by 1.1-inch (365mm x 28mm) rear rotors.

New interior

Inside, the STS's interior includes a new steering wheel with available genuine Sapele Pommele wood trim. A heated steering wheel also is available. The center stack of the instrument panel is revised with the addition of wood trim that has new metallic surroundings.

An optional head-up display projects key driving information (such as speedometer ratings) onto the windshield, enabling drivers to keep their eyes on the road.

The 2008 STS will offer a performance handling package; enhanced variable-effort steering with StabiliTrak on V8 models; and new lane departure warning and blind side alerts.

New V6

For 2008, STS will be the first GM vehicle equipped with a new 3.6-liter direct-injected V6 engine. The new base powerplant, with 298 horsepower (222 kW), delivers 40 more horsepower; and torque is increased to 268 lb.-ft. (371 Nm) – up from 252 lb.-ft. (348 Nm) on the current base engine. The new direct-injected 3.6L will be mated to the Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic transmission.

Advantages of the new direct-injected engine include a 25-percent reduction in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions. Additionally, despite the 15-percent increase in power, fuel economy is expected to increase slightly.

...Awesome. Very nice job, Cadillac. I have to admit that the V6 STS seems to make more sense than the V6 model, well, almost. The nearly 300 BHP should be enough to make the car move quite well, and the extra cog in the transmission should help the acceleration times as well. A better competitor to the Mercedes E350 and BMW 535i? Yes, and I'm excited to see how it will perform against the others...

I find it funny how allot of cars from GM have th fender thing its rediculaous as its not a compay sepcif they are putting it on for the sake of it really , here its on the Caprice (LS , LTZ and SS models ) and the Lumina too and the Caddi esclade and now the STS , so is this a cadlic desgin or a Chevy one? and isn't the STS a bit new to have an update already?

I'm still not sure if they will be able to beat BMW and Merc .......

I like how the two inches of incredibly cheap plastic between the DVD and CD slot has been preserved! 👍

...Pretty much. I highly doubt that Chevrolet will completely restyle the Lumina as the Impala here in the US, and if we're lucky, maybe we'll see the return of the Caprice nameplate again.

...To better answer your question BMW318, the fender flares are just something that GM is doing across the board I think more as a stylistic choice than anything else. I personally think they look good, and gives most of the cars a good look overall, and seeing it on the new Cadillacs works out great...

And no, I don't anticipate it beating any Merc or BMW, but Cadillac will give it their best shot... Hell, they may even surprise Audi on this one...

Which is odd, because I had thought they were completely getting rid of it. Oh well...

Ok I should of said that was a pic of the caprice , the Lumina is what you call the G8 well the SS version

here is the normal version

Nah - Cadillac's motto seems to be 'if we could do better, let's tell people we're going to and then not.'

I personally would change my "dream car" from a Diablo to a Cien if the thing happened. I'd photograph every Sixteen I saw on the roads. I personally would take the STS seriously if they got rid of the cheap plastic. And I personally would no longer laugh at the Catera if they burned every single example ever made.

But Cadillac refuses to do any of these, and we're all poorer for it.

The V6 sounds nice. More power is always a good thing. The car that will do the most with that motor is the CTS.

Goddamn, this is the problem with car companies, they try to fit the same front end on all of their cars, not matter how ugly it looks. This is the same grill as the new CTS, but they just threw it on here without updating any other parts of the car. Ugly. Subaru did the same thing, and Ford, and Dodge. All ended up with ugly cars.

I don't like Caddy's new huge ass grill. But meh whatever I'll wait and see what it looks like in person.

I thought the CTS looked good in person with the larger grille. Problem was, the car on display in Chicago was silver, and that didn't look too good with the giant chrome grile. The red one? That looks great...

I'm still up in the air about the new CTS. I need to see it on the street, which is odd that I haven't seen it yet on the streets.

The '08 CTS isn't out quite yet, but I believe the sales are supposed to start later this summer. I'd guess that August or September is a late guesstimate for the CTS to hit the streets, but I'm sure that tests of the car, and a few early production models will be on the streets no later than July.

...They are building them not too far from here (Lansing), so if I see one I'll be sure to snap some photos...

Wow thats a fricking huge grill. And the side vents on the fenders are just stupid looking. Sounds like the only good thing they added was the engine.

Yay!

I love the idea of the 300 BHP DI V6 model in my driveway, and I'm sure that a lot of people will do the same. This is by far one of the best-looking cars in the segment, really the only car to come close in the M45...

This is actually the first time for me to see this thread...and the new STS. I think the exterior of the STS looks much better than the new CTS. The car looks more "filled" out. I however don't think the interior is much of an improvement really. Again, I'll hold my final reservation on how the inside feels to the touch.

My approval rating: 85%. Add +10% if there is a V8 model or supercharged V series with more than 450bhp.

There already is, and presumably will be. The current STS-V packs a 469 BHP Supercharged 4.4L Northstar V8. If you're talking about the 'standard' V8, you're going to need to wait a while. My guess that is unless Cadillac puts DI on the current 4.6L (320 BHP) V8, or debuts the new 'Ultra' V8 in the near future, a 400+ BHP STS will be limited to the V-Series only.

...I still think the 'sweet spot' is going to be the 'base' STS with the 300 BHP DI V6...

Its hard to know for certain. I'd expect the addition of DI to add at least $1000 to the price-tag of the CTS, so I'd expect the same for the STS, putting it in around $43K.

Weight-issue update:

The guys at GMI are saying there was an update of the weight of the CTS. There was an error of them quoting 2007 specs, as the 2008 Sigma II CTS should clock in just-shy of 3800 lbs. So, yes, its closer to the 5-series than we think...

If you can get an STS with 300bhp for around $43k I'd say that's a good deal. If you could get more power for only $3k or so more then I'd say it would be a steal.

Even sweeter, if they do it of course, will be an assumed STS diesel with the new 2.9L unit, 250 BHP, 406 lb-ft of torque. If that ends up splitting the difference between the basic V6 model and the V8, the extra money may be well spent for the fuel savings and low-end power alone...

Looks 1,000,000 times better than the "slap together body panels" CTS, and while the grill still doesn't look good, it actaully fits on the front end of this one.

I have a rather major question surrounding the STS: What is the point of the Northstar engine anymore? With the new 3.6L V6 putting out 302 BHP, it puts it within spitting distance of the Northstar. Fuel economy is no doubt better as well, the car comes with the same 6-speed transmission, and it weighs about 100kg less. Not even mentioning cost reasons, what is the point of the Northstar equipped STS?

No idea. Does the Northstar have DoD? If it doesn't GM needs to up the power by 100bhp or quit making it.

This is a question that GM is quickly trying to answer. As of right now, there are two solutions to the problem:

- Add DI on the 4.6L Northstar, boost power to 355 BHP (in theory)
- Or bring in the 'Ultra' V8 program, set to replace Northstar within the next few months/years
