Since Brad hasn't been all over this yet and since he posts information on MINI's before I do I figure I need to beat him to the punch on this one. Apparently with GM's budget crisis they forgot about separating their brands more and trying to attract different customers. This looks like the more or less took a VUE and slapped a Traverse/Malibu grill on it and called it a day.

2010 Equinox Inside and Out
The 2010 Chevy Equinox looks to be a far more sophisticated vehicle than the crossover it replaces. It will be powered by a choice of two direct injection engines, with the four-cylinder model able to crest 30 mpg on the highway and the new 3.0L V6 packing 255 horsepower. Chevy's new crossover also adds upgraded aesthetics with expressive, modern headlamps and tail lights, the new corporate Chevy grille and a more muscular stance. On the inside, the Equinox also looks very Malibu with a sweeping, double cockpit and a center stack that looks as good as any in the segment.

We had a chance to get down and dirty with the all-new Equinox at the GM Design Center last week, and the video evidence of our trip is available after the jump for your high-def, widescreen viewing pleasure.

Detroit Preview: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox debuts with direct injection
Now that General Motors will be getting a cash infusion to stay in business at least through January, the automaker plans to unveil some new products at next month's Detroit Auto Show. The first one we can show you is the second-generation 2010 Chevy Equinox. You might recognize the greenhouse from spy photos we published earlier this year in which which the CUV was misidentified as the Cadillac BRX. While the Equinox gets a complete re-skin for 2010, the new CUV's dimensions are within an inch of the current model in all directions.

The Equinox remains a unibody crossover with either front- or all-wheel drive and the same basic suspension layout as before. The platform is an evolution of the current Theta architecture shared with the Saturn Vue. The Equinox's new styling looks more contemporary with prominent wheel arches and the obligatory Chevy twin-port grille. Inside, a new dual cockpit setup looks very similar to the one in the larger Traverse. As expected of any new model these days, the full array of USB audio, Bluetooth and DVD entertainment systems are also now available. Read about the new engines powering the Equinox after the jump.

===

The center console bin in the new 2010 Equinox is exceptionally deep, being able to swallow a 15-inch laptop with ease. While the new cockpit layout is attractive with fewer visible seams than the larger Traverse, the pre-production model was saw in person had cheap-looking hard plastics covering the dash. Chevrolet officials promised that production models coming in May would look much better, although hard plastic will apparently still be the order of the day.

A more robust body structure along with a number of other enhancements should make the cabin a quieter place. Triple-sealed doors, laminated acoustical glass and a drag coefficient reduced from 0.42 to 0.36 should make wind noise significantly lower than before. The doors now extend down into the rocker panels (just like the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS) making step-in easier. The kids in back can also slide their seat fore and aft up to eight inches and recline their seatbacks, as well. An optional DVD entertainment system incorporates two screens that flip up from the seatbacks. In addition, these can be individually controlled so one kid can watch DVDs and the other can play video games.

The current Equinox had an all V6 engine lineup including a pushrod 3.4L that traces its lineage back to the original 1980 Chevy Citation. Existing Equinox Sport models use the 3.6L twin-cam "high-feature" V6 that appears in so many GM products today. Both of these engines have been replaced with new engines that have similar power but are considerably more fuel efficient.

The entry engine for the 2010 Equinox is a 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder now offered for the first time in normally aspirated and direct-injected form. With 182 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque running through a new 6-speed automatic transaxle, this model will be the fuel efficiency champ of the lineup. The front-drive four-banger should get 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. That's a huge increase over the 17/24 mpg values of the old engine. Unfortunately, while the new base engine's power output virtually matches the old 3.4L, torque is down significantly so towing capacity has dropped from 3,500 lbs to just 1,500 lbs.

Those who need the full 3,500 lbs of towing grunt will opt for the new 3.0L V6. Like the four-cylinder, this one is direct-injected to the tune of 255 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque. Those figures are down a bit from the 264/250 of the old 3.6L, but again the payoff is improved fuel efficiency. Also helping efficiency on both models is electric power steering that no longer saps engine power.

No word yet from GM on whether or when either a mild or two-mode hybrid system might be stuffed in the new Equinox to improve mileage further. The new DI four and six-speed automatic combined with the second-generation lithium battery mild hybrid system might even approach the mileage of the Ford Escape hybrid, but hybrids were the one subject no one at GM wanted to officially comment on.

The Equinox shares its platform with the Saturn Vue. With the distinct possibility that Saturn could be euthanized, the two-mode hybrid system from that model would need a new home. Judging by the "no comment on future products" responses that were accompanied by smiles, it seems likely that a hybrid (either next-gen mild or two-mode) will join the Equinox lineup sooner rather than later.

Look everybody! Its the 2010 Chevrolet BTSOSVI (Buy The Saab Or Suzuki Versions Instead)! Now with available Who-Gives-a-Crap and optional Why-Bother!

Seriously, though, at least it is better than the Saturn version. I do like the idea of downsizing the engines, but I have to wonder whether it is wise to put a four-banger in an SUV that weighs 4000 pounds. They should have stuck a detuned version of the Cobalt SS engine in it instead.

Oh look, another nondescript SUV. I'm with Toronado, the Saab version is a nicer design and I prefer the brand.

Alternatively, there are about a dozen other small SUVs that I'd prefer too. Chevy and co really need to start offering something different, differentiating a bit like VW do with Audi/Seat/Skoda etc.

The new Equinox is still better looking then the previous one that we have right now.

I mean look at it...

Looks like as Chevy continues to look for more quality, they are encroaching more and more on other brands. Time to rethink things I think.

List of small SUVs I'd rather have: (Granted, most are probably smaller than the Equinox and some aren't available in the US, but so be it)

- Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Suzuki Grand Vitara (seriously), Ford Kuga, VW Tiguan, Land Rover Freelander, BMW X3, Mitsubishi Outlander (which I've driven) and it's Peugeot/Citroen sisters, Dodge Nitro... pretty much any really. At least the Equinox is more appealing that the Chevy Captiva that we get over here. I don't know if you're "blessed" with that one.

The Dodge Nitro is awful, a buddy of mines parents have one and it's the most uncomfortable vehicle to sit in and it drives awful. Not to mention it's bad in the snow and the handling is all wobbly in the dry. I don't know what could be worse then that thing.

Everything else you mentioned aside from the Frenchies I've driven and liked to a degree. Although the X3 is ugly as sin.

We get the Captiva as our VUE although it looks a lot different.

It looks hideous from every single angle.

That's quite an achievement.

I'm simply surprised that the little four can get 30mpg in the CITY while moving that around.

It doesn't.

At least it looks interesting. I walked past one the other day, probably one of only a few I've seen, and gave a thoughtful "hmmm". It doesn't remotely surprise me that it's awful. It's a Dodge that's on sale in the UK, it's almost supposed to be rubbish :P

The X3 has grown on me. The rest are just good, honest small 4x4s, and should all prove pretty reliable and reasonably economical. The Tiguan is probably my favourite, and it's actually remarkably small. The Outlander was fairly decent to drive, though to be fair the one I drove was a 2.5 (I think) V6. The diesel in the French pair is supposed to be better than Mitsubishi's.

More or less completely nondescript than the Captiva? We also get the Captiva as a Vauxhall, the name of which escapes me.

I meet this with a big ol friendly *YAWWWWWN.*

Wow. Chevy manages to out boring Toyota. or maybe match. Yeah, match...I mean, anything that steals Highlander sales is a good thing, but, just so much...meh.

EDIT: And you went YSSMAN on the Bad-pun title, too. Nice one, Joey.

So that thing is on the same frame as the Vue? Sweet! I love the looks. I hope it competes well. In my area the first generation caught on well. I'm sure this one will too, especially since it looks good.

But I have to ask, why are almost all new car designs inspired by the flamey wavy shapes of Bangle Bimmers? I mean, everything. The only company not afflicted with swoopy curves is Cadillac. Yeah, the little SUV thing for Europe has it a little, but not a lot. The awesomely sharp angles of the CTS cancel that thing out anyway.

I like it. Nothing too boring styled or too extreme like some of the latest cars with pointy corners that could cut off someone's limbs if you drive too close near the sidewalk... No really, I'm really digging the side view and rear view 👍

There are two reasons U.S. automakers are failing
1) Dependability
2) They can only design ugly cars. I mean that has to be the ugliest front end style I've ever seen on a GM product.

Good lord we pawned that thing off on Europe? I'm surprised you guys even buy them. I some how always forget you guys have Chrysler products in Europe. I think while I was there I saw a couple of Neons and PT's, but other then that I can't really remember anything standoutish.

This is our VUE:

The Vauxhall version is the Antara.

Even gave him credit, and Keef credit for coming up with the credit idea.

GM's are more or less pretty dependable, it's the small things that go wrong that's the annoying part. It's often said GM's will run crappy longer then most vehicles will run at all.

And car design in general is getting uglier.

Epic win guys! I couldn't have done it better myself!

I ignored the news based on how ish-ish the entry is. On the one hand, its a fairly significant benchmark on what GM is doing with their new cars and trucks (ie, its really nice!)... But its a sad day when I'm more interested in the mechanical bits and pieces than anything else. Seriously.

The New 3.0L DIG V6 (LF1)

30di.jpg

Considering that this will replace what has become the "workhorse" V6 in the GM line, the DOHC 3.6L LLT, which replaced the Vortec 3800 two years ago, there is a huge amount of significance resting on it. The power output is right on the money, the fuel mileage ratings are pretty good (18/25 in the Equinox), and it should do a great job of powering everything from the Equinox to the CTS.

Secondly is the new 2.4L DIG I4...

24di.jpg

With 184 BHP, it should be a strong player in a very competitive segment. I'm looking forward to it showing up in more cars (particularly the Malibu), and presumably the "sporty" models later down the line.

=========

Other than that, I'm very pleased by it, but I still prefer the VUE/Antara in a strange way. I just wish that would get an updated interior and the new engine packages to remain on a similar playing field.

We get quite a few US cars. God knows why, I mean I've nothing against them but US makers are having enough of a problem selling them in their home market, let alone selling them in Europe which in general doesn't really "get" American cars.

We get:

Cadillac BLS, STS, SRX and Escalade (think the Escalade may be LHD-only though. We're also soon to get the CTS-V), Chevrolet Matiz, Aveo, Lacetti, Tacuma, Epica, Captiva, Corvette (I'm aware many of those are Daewoos rather than US market cars, though we may well get the Cruze when it's released, yay!), Chrysler 300C, Grand Voyager, Sebring, Sebring Cabrio, Dodge Avenger, Caliber, Journey, Nitro, HUMMER H3 (actually in RHD too)

So yeah, a fair few. The only US cars I've seen in significant numbers in the UK are the Chrysler Neon, old Voyager and PT Cruiser, though Chrysler did have a big headstart in the UK market over the others. There's a Caddy/Corvette dealership near me so I see them a fair bit, there are plenty of the ex-Daewoo Chevys, a few 300Cs (especially since they gave us a diesel) but I barely ever see any Dodges or actual US Chevys.

I wish we got the BLS. It would have made a nice entry level Caddy.

Boo. It's as ugly and improportionate now as it was when it was new. Cadillac needs to get its high-dollar image back before it can go down low. They've moved onto a slightly different design set since then, anyway. What they should do is design something top-notch for Caddy's use and then dumb it down a little for everyone else, but the BLS didn't work like that.

It would be sold in the same showroom as the CTS. Hardly the toughest of competition.

No, the BLS just had better bits and pieces on the inside than any other Cadillac at the time. In essence, the BLS would have been too good to sell alongside the CTS that was around in 2006.

Chevrolet Matiz

These make me sick into my own mouth. I don't understand how they looked at the Daewoo version and thought "Let's make it uglier!"

The cars I mostly see are the 300C, PT Cruiser and the Neon. We need more Corvettes on the road over here though, I'd love to see that. 👍

They should have styled it like the Vauxhall Antara which is quite a decient looking SUV expecially the interior. The Equinox looks like a melted Antara... Why do designers think melting things makes a new exciting style! :ouch:

We also get it over here as a Chevy Captiva.. why could they not just take this one to the states?

I like the new design. Its way better than the previous model.

Being honest, Chevrolets design team has been turning out better cars in the last few years than they had in the past 2 decades. (Vette excluded) And its not just badge engineering.

And the overall quality has been getting better too.

I don't like the Antara at all - considering the cars it's up against it's not remotely interesting enough, and given the standard of the Japanese competition it won't be as reliable either.
