The toughest rally in the world begins tomorrow (January 1st) with stages in Argentina, Chile and Peru.

The rally route can be found here (Click detailed route for more information).

Here are the entry lists for the rally:
Bikes

Between them Coma and Despres have won the last 6 Dakar's, they're both back this year and must be considered favourites.

Quads
http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/us/rider/rider-list-quads.html#ancre

This class is already in controversy, Machacek (former Dakar winner), Laskawiec, Declerck, Sonik, Leconte, Cangani and Albinowski have been kicked out of the main quad class for having bikes too heavily modified. The other 2 previous winners, the Patronelli brothers, are also present and eligible for class win.

Cars

Volkswagen are gone but X-Raid remain as favourites with their Mini Countryman's, an all star line-up should see them and in particular Peterhansel favourites for the win. Others to watch include Al-Attiyah (reigning champion) is in a Hummer, De Villiers (Toyota) and Robby Gordon (Hummer).

Trucks

Kamaz field a new line-up as former champions Chagin and Kabirov have both retired, Jos Verstappen was due to race in the trucks but couldn't get the paperwork completed in time.

I got to go to Mark Miller's house because he lives so close to me, but I was little and thats when he was racing Volkswagen 1600 Buggies! Now he is a Volkswagen factory driver. That's crazy.

I never follow any cross country endurance events apart from the Dakar, so I'm very much excited about it! :) Great way to start a new year of motorsport!

Always sad when anyone dies like this, but this is Dakar, and everyone is aware of the risks - at least the competitors are, it must be very hard for the families of all involved though, especially the bike and quad riders.

Anyway.. glad to see the Mini's doing well, I don't think we'll see too many successes from the WRC Mini's this year, so this would be a nice alternative. Also love the pic in the OP.

The bike battle should be great as ever! Looking forward to the days review on Eurosport tonight!

Same, the coverage is terrible though, last night their was only about 2 minutes of highlights, the rest of the show was clips of last year and interviews.

So far ... another Peterhansel show, with Al-Attiyah in second. David against Goliath, Mini against Hummer 👍

Coma apparently chose a wrong route and had to go back. Lost about 15 minutes to Despres. Time to raise the game further I guess.

I wonder if Coma was given the wrong road book like Robby Gordon yesterday?

In the cars Peterhansel lost a few minutes near the end, Holowczyc is leading for now...

I wonder if Gordon's supply truck will make it in time.

The Eurosport coverage has gotten worse this year. Too many interviews and features during the highlights, which should mainly focus on the racing. It seems like they cut the race footage at least by half if not more.

Well, here's a bizarre episode:
There was also bad news for Orlando Terranova, who was a surprise second quickest on Wednesday. He fell out with his co-driver Andy Grider overnight; the pair refusing to work with each other again. As a result, he was force to withdraw from the event.
First time I've heard of something like that happening (but then, I've never followed the Dakar too closely).

^ That sucks

I agree, There needs to be more race footage, longer than 1 minute please.

Wow ... turns out Robby Gordon's Hummer is really a menace to Peterhansel's lead.

Would be interesting, to see a Hummer win this event. It's more a Panamericana than a Dakar, but a rally-raid anyway. And that's the closest you get to the big old events of our grandfathers' era.

Im excited for Robby because no American have won over all I believe.

I'm happy that Robby may quit looking like a failure to many American racing enthusiast! :sly::dopey:

He is great at offroad races! When I was racing off road, he was one of my favorites and I remember seeing him many times at the SCORE and Best of the Desert Series races.

Al-Attiyah abbandoned. But Gordon is on a charge, Peterhansel curently losing about 2 minutes, nobody gets near the times they're doing.

Not saying he isn't good at off roading though I like others. However, Dakar is a different beast than SCORE. Plus you have him going up against drivers where some race in or did race WRC and were champions. Robby to me should stay in off road racing rather than other forms of racing.

Just glad he may finally be successful and get first. Wish it was against Sainez

It would be cool to see him win in that Hummer. In past events it has given them trouble...

It's still in South America I see? I wonder when they'll return to Europe/Africa.

Terrorist threats. Hope they will one day. Possibly not though. :grumpy:

Possbile spoiler alert, since we here in America get some delayed Dakar coverage.

Here's something we'll hear about for the rest of the rally:

http://jalopnik.com/5875541/are-the-french-discriminating-against-nascar-driver-robby-gordon

Since Robby's involved, I know it's not just going to go away baised off his attitude. I've never been a Gordon fan, but since he's an American in the Dakar, I want him to win. The article states that he can keep running and if the decision is over turned, in around 2 weeks, he may win if can manage it. And hearing that reminded me of the NationWide race where he was DQ'd on the last few laps, but kept going and "won" and did a donut with the real winner. Should be interesting to see how it comes out now since they've gave Robby a reason to be Robby . I have a feeling he's going to run hard the rest of the rally, if he stays, and if he gets close to Peterhansel at some point it should be interesting.
