A total of three turbocharged units will be available, including the first diesel in a compact SUV in the States, a 1.6-liter direct-injection four-cylinder rated at 136hp (101 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320Nm) of peak torque paired to a six-speed automatic transmission claimed to return an estimated 40mpg (5.9l/100km) on the highway.

The other two (gasoline) engines are a 170hp (120kW) and 201 lb-ft (275Nm) 1.5-liter turbo offered with a six-speed automatic that gets a GM-estimated 31mpg (7.6 l/100km) highway, and a 252hp (188 kW) and 260 lb-ft (353Nm) 2.0-liter turbo matched to a new nine-speed automatic returning 28mpg (8.4 l/100km) highway.

It is a much better use of the new design language than the Cruze, but it still makes itself look an awful lot like the Honda HR-V with the way the headlights look like eyelashes. Using that diesel seems like a pretty bold move for the US market, I'm guessing GM wants to capitalize on VW's problems as best they can - and they get to grab the "most efficient crossover" title once again. At 40 MPG and with a range that'll likely top 600 miles, that's going to be one hell of a road trip option.

Don't ask me to turn a wrench on one, if it's anything like what's out now.

Cool, it gets an estimated 40mpg with the diesel. That's great.

What happens when it breaks? Right to the dealer so they can take more of your money. Inevitably this car is going to be one of the more commonplaces on the road, so the average joes like me get to work on them. And let me tell you, it sucks. I really love sealed transmissions and power steering units.

Awesome to hear about the fold flat seats, albeit at the expense of the sliding seat. Seems to maintain lots of legroom though!

Never thought I'd be excited about Equinox's until I bought one.

I've always liked the Chevrolet Equinox ever since it came out. Very nice automobile. The front design on this newer Equinox looks okay. I don't think it flows nicely like on the latest Cruze, but it's nice.

They used to be invisible to me until I saw a Black Equinox Sport for sale. Now that I drive it around I see them everywhere all the time.

I think the Sports from the first generation were really sharp looking suv's and improved the appearance ten fold. If I had any interest in getting another small SUV, i'd consider the new diesel easily. But my life and career plans call for a truck as my next vehicle.

GM Europe could probably find a market for that as a top level Opel. Some of the styling cues are already there.

I think its a pretty good looking crossover, and bodes well for improvements coming for the rest of the GMC lineup. I can't say I'm much of a fan of the button and switch operated shifting, however. The push button up/down shift buttons are downright ridiculous, and having to pull the switch for reverse and drive seems just as alien. Maybe it'll work well in practice, I don't know. I guess I'd just want the Equinox's interior with the Terrain's exterior.
