Roll on the BTCC at Silverstone next weekend! Can Ash Sutton clinch the title with a meeting to spare? Long shot but at the rate he's going he'll certainly champion with a race or two to spare!

Got to be a shoe in for it. That Focus is imperious in his hands, I can’t see anything other than him clinching it next weekend.

I also kinda hope he does, otherwise there’ll be too much safe driving at Brands. With the championship tied up we should see some proper banger racing.

I hope he can equal Alain Menu's record of 12 Wins in 1997.

BTCC Qualifying at Silverstone currently under way. 15mins left of the first session before the top 10 shootout.

Also, for this weekend Sam Osbourne's NAPA Focus will be running a a full Valvoline livery as an homage to the '96 WSR Mondeo's of Radisich and Robertson. Suits the Focus very well 👍.

-------

Edit: And that's a wrap, the top 10 shootout has just finished, and 2023 newbie Mikey Doble has taken a historic first ever pole position, by just 0.012s from Turkingtons BMW! It also means PMR have broken NAPA's 100% pole position streak this year.

Incredibly tight qualifying across both sessions. The top 10 was covered by just 0.109s in Q1, and a less than 0.3s cover 1st to 9th in the shootout.

The top 10 for tomorrows first race:

WOW! Well done Mikey Doble! Not bad for the oldest car on the grid!

Jake Hill wins Race 1 from Dan Rowbottom and Andrew Watson, Mikey Doble recovers to 11th after mistakenly doing an extra warm-up lap and having to start from the back, Daryl DeLeon scores his first points in 14th.

Sam Osborne notably running his Focus in the colours of the Valvoline Mondeo of 1995 and 1996.

Such a shame for Doble, how does that even happen? Surely someone must have relayed it to him that it was 1. Sutton failing to score gives Hill that glimmer of hope, 2 more wins with Sutton out of the points would make Brands very interesting.

That is very gutted for Doble but at least he managed to get in the points. Sutton always seems to blow it in one race at each meeting this season. No wonder he still hasn't secured the title despite scoring 9 wins already!

Disaster for Jake Hill in Race 2. He has had a problem with his BMW and it has cost him the lead after dominating from the start. He is still going as we speak but his chances of victory, and quite possibly the title, are over.

Compounded by unbelievable drives from Sutton and Ingram who finished 1st and 3rd respectively after starting outside the top 20.

They need to swot up on their history, those BTCC commentators, they've just stated Sutton as having equalled Fabrizio Giovanardi's record of 10 Wins in a season. That is true but Laurent Aiello already scored 10 Wins in 1999 and Yvan Muller scored 10 Wins in 2001 and the record holder of course is Alain Menu with 12 Wins in 1997.

Absolutely stunning drive from both Ingram and Sutton in race 2, Sutton especially to equal Giovanadi's 10 wins in a season. Will make Brands interesting, as you can bet Ash would like to break Menu's record for 12 in a season...Tingram with an equally epic drive to 3rd, keeps in just alive in the title.

But Ash is on the cusp of a 4th title now. Could win it in this final race, but it would be nigh-on impossible.

I thought they’d stated he’d be the first SINCE Giovanardi.

Also, if/when Sutton gets his 4th title, (I need to checkup on my knowledge and the stats), but won't it be the first time in a long time if not ever in the modern era that a driver has won a title in RWD and FWD machinery? 🤔.

I certainly don’t know of anyone else who has done it in both.

Question mark over Win Percy as I’m not sure if the 1982 Corolla was front or rear drive.

Say, this could be Honda's 1st winless season since 1995 (Excluding 2001 when Honda took a year out and Simon Graves came 1st on the road in his Production Class Honda on 3 occasions).

The E70 Corolla GT Win Percy drove was RWD, with his previous 2 titles coming in the RX-7 of course.

Just had a scroll through all the previous champions, and it looks like no one has ever managed to win multiple titles in both FWD, RWD or 4WD machinery. So it would be a first if Sutton manages it, and a notable feat at that. Given historically there's usually been drivers you associate as FWD specialists (your Plato's, Neal's, Sheddens etc) and RWD ones like Turkington. Andy Jordan was probably the closest to winning a title in both in recent memory, when he was driving the 3 series.

Did you mean Turkington for RWD not Plato?

But yeah, it’s an awesome feat when you think about it, hard to believe no one has done it before.

Ah my bad, I do mean Turkington yes. My fault for not proof-reading well enough .

Definitely, that type of versatility and ability to adapt to different machinery, given FWD and RWD require such different styles, is a valuable skill.

So, the 150 wins for BMW set me thinking, I can't account for all 150 (I'm assuming overall wins only), but this is what they've done by car going back to about 1985

E24 635CSi 3
E30 M3 9
E30 318 0
E36 318is 6

E90 320si 30
E87 120d 0

150 does refer only to outright wins (It would be a lot more than that if Class Wins were included too, given the success of the M3 in Class B for instance)
