I blogged about Le Mans in my blog. Again, I will be watching to see if the blue lions of Peugeot can do what they did last year- win Le Mans. Something tells me that Audi learned their lesson last year and can't wait to tame those blue lions.

I saw the lovely cars from the Spotter Guide deal. Sweet lineup of cars for this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. Can't wait to see this bad boy on TV and online!

Yes, but the R15s were faster during the night last year too, but from what the commentators were saying, the R15 seems to be easier and more comfortable during the night too, not just in regard to engine power. Also, if it was just down to the engine gaining power, why didn't any of the 908s, or the R10s, improve during the night?

And I'm not sure it's just down to lights either. All the top drivers will know their way around the circuit, day or night, and the corners are lit up to a certain extent too.

Innovative vehicle electrical system concept
The vehicle electrical system in the Le Mans sports car is entirely new: A lithium-ion battery, as found in some hybrid vehicles, is used for the first time. It is lighter than the conventional battery and supplies a higher voltage.

The headlights fitted to the R15 TDI also benefit from the higher power. At Le Mans, Audi competes for the first time with a low beam unit comprised entirely of light emitting diodes, which represents the next generation of Audi LED technology for road cars.

Head of Technology at Audi Sport Dr. Martin Mühlmeier explained that the changes, both inside and out, were designed to aid efficiency in the factory’s bid to reclaim the greatest prize in endurance racing.

"This year, the Le Mans regulations prescribe air restrictors with a smaller diameter and reduced supercharging pressure for diesel-powered vehicles,” he said. "Due to the reduction of engine power as a result of the regulations we have tried to make the car’s aerodynamics even more efficient than before and to improve the Cd value and downforce parameters."

Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Technology at Audi Sport, explained that the ACO’s new regulations had bought about their own set of problems.

"Our objective was to keep power loss to a minimum despite the limitations imposed by the regulations," he said "We managed to do that through a lot of detailed work."

"After Le Mans 2009, our specifications for the R15 plus listed about 20 key items. Efficiency and reliability were at the top of the list but we also looked at details like improved nighttime lighting of the track. We were able to meet this wish of the drivers with a new headlight concept."

For 2010, Audi updated their R15, dubbed the R15 plus. 2010 Regulations reduce the size of diesel LMP1 air restrictors, and reducing supercharger boost. The car's nose was removed and revealed the raw crash structures. The front fenders were also lowered in an effort to reduce drag. The concept of air running through the car was abandoned for a more conventional design. The air channel that exits to the side of the car is gone, and the new headlight concept was brought in. Audi stated that they had improved the fuel tank and cooling system also.

Everywhere I look they speak about the R15 lights...

So, if I do agree with you it is not just down to the lights, I'm sure this is one of the key points ! It is a combination of different factors -nights are cooler so "extra ponnies", the more powerful the light sare the more fuel they consum so if they manage to have powerfull lights with very low consumption... More power left for the motor ! -It wasn't down to see clearer ;)- !

Another great article I found -not about the lights ;)- (http://www.motorstv.com/car/endurance/lms/11062010/lm-bourdais-holds-le-mans-pole-peugeot)

LM: Bourdais holds Le Mans pole for Peugeot

The Peugeot 908 of Sebastien Bourdais, Simon Pagenaud and Pedro Lamy will start the weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hours from pole position.

The time set by Bourdais in Wednesday evening’s qualifying session wasn’t beaten on Thursday as the three works Audis found it impossible to shift the four 908s from the front two rows of the grid.

None of the three factory Peugeots or the Team Oreca-run 908 had to improve their times on Thursday as the fastest of the Audis set a best of 3:21.981. That time was eight tenths slower than the Oreca car and more than two seconds from Bourdais’ pole position time.

The order of the Audis in fifth, sixth and seventh remains the same. All three cars improved their best times, but the R15 of Mike Rockenfeller, Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas stayed fastest ahead of the Allan McNish / Dindo Capello / Tom Kristensen machine.

The two Aston Martin Racing Lolas are eighth and ninth, while the Oreca 01 AIM of Soheil Ayari, Didier Andre and Andy Meyrick improved its time to sneak into the top ten.

In LMP2, Danny Watts re-took pole position in the Strakka Racing HPD ARX-01c from the similar car of Highcroft Racing’s David Brabham, Marino Franchitti and Marco Werner.

Watts’ time in the car he shares with Johnny Kane and Nick Leventis beat Brabham’s best by over 1.5 seconds. The HPD-powered RML Lola of Mike Newton, Tommy Erdos and Andy Wallace qualified third.

Tomas Enge didn’t have to improve on his time from Wednesday to secure GT1 class pole in the Young Driver AMR Aston Martin DBR9 he shares with Christoffer Nygaard and Peter Kox.

The Czech driver’s best effort held firm even though Bas Leinders got within three tenths of the benchmark time as he put the Marc VDS Racing Ford GT second on the grid. The Matech Competition Ford of Romain Grosjean, Jonathan Hirschi and Thomas Mutsch was third.

Ferrari driver Gianmaria Bruni’s incredible GT2 time from Wednesday was also good enough to keep reigning champions Risi Competizione on the class pole. Both Corvettes jumped above the AF Corse Ferrari of Giancarlo Fisichella, Toni Vilander and Jean Alesi to take second and third with Olivier Beretta going marginally faster than Antonio Garcia in the sister car.

The Warm-up session is done and the fastest time was set by The Audi(Allan McNish). It was wet and I think we might, just might have a full wet race.

Legends will start in 1 hour more...

Trying for as little sleep as possible this wondrous weekend. :D

Just finished experimenting with frustration-pen-ultimate, aka GT5:Prologue - event S10 (suzuka 750PP) and I'm ready to *watch* some racing (instead of acting like *I'm* the one driving).

Legends is going to start soon I think, coverage is supposed to be starting right now on Eurosport, but it seems to be just showing adverts at the moment.

Here come the daddies of Le Man, Jag XJR's, Porsche 956/962s, Mercedes C11, Nissans and Spices.

Mega.

The gap between 3rd place car and 4th place is real big already.. Nearly 20 seconds!!

Puncture for Spice.. Shame :(

Car #4 spins out, car #9 is being pushed out from the track and car #2 is definitely out. Seems like the front of the car is bottoming... Already halfway.

If your listening to RLM, then yes by 20 seconds.

Wow what a race, don't the drivers realise these cars are worth a £million plus.

A great shame the battle for the lead is over.

Aaaah!! Car #39 has a puncture :(

LOL now car #34.. The leader! That makes that we have lost the 3rd leader of the race
