I've always been curious of what would happen if you're for say going down the highway at 75mph and just shift the car into reverse?

Hmm, that would be interesting to watch :) I think it would depend on the car, there are a whole bunch of different parts that could break.

A lot of noise, and lack of forward motion? Go try it out, and tell us! :P

I'd say the engine may explode first. In my car the redline in reverse (8500rpm) is at 23mph - that's 2.71mph per 1000rpm. Shifting into reverse at 75mph would require the engine to rev at roughly 27700rpm...

After that, you'd be in a world of pain and insurance claims.

I did it with my R\C Car and it just peeled out and started going in reverse. :D

I did this in my dads lexus one time to see what would happen, and in his car...it was quite boring, the car just went 'clunk' and turned off. It was only at 40mph though. It didnt do anything overly damaging considering the car still went for a good 40k miles and we sold it without ever having anything break down....98 es300 btw.

You would drop the tranny basically plus massive amounts of internal problems. Get a junker for like $100 and do it:D

Most modern cars have a gate which stops you shifting into reverse from any forward gear but 1st. How you managed it in a Lexus I can only guess - unless it was an auto (bleugh).

...and the engine would be turning backwards :P

I did it in GT3 and it sucked. Someone go video tape somebody doing it , I don't have $100 to put out for a junk heap :(

I agree that it'd probably strip your gears. At best.

At worst, it could cause your transmission to go critical and "explode".

I did it in a Neon, it just shut off, engine just can't do that so it quits

Shifting into reverse is very dangerous. You should never do it. They teach it in drivers ed...

You must be a riot in car parks then... :D

Actually,I think that it would either not let you shift into reverse, or lock the drive wheels. It could brake an axel/drive shaft. Engine wise, I don't think it would do anything but stall it.

But I'm not about to do anything like that in my 323. ;)

I think on a manual it might not even be possible to shift it into reverse, i know once in an explorer i tried to put it into a gear that was a bit too low and it did a bunch of grinding, i can only imagine how bad it would be going into reverse at highway speeds.

I did it in a 2003 Nissan Maxima. I was in 4th gear at 85 mph. And it wouldnt let me shift into reverse. It was like a lock or wall was there stopping it. Then I did it in a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse and we junked it bc it wouldnt turn back on.

I've seen some video clip before of some dude in a brand new evolution 6 (at the time) doing doughnuts, and then for some stupid reason he puts it into reverse...
the footage was taken from a distance though, all you could see was his transmition *pop* out...

Was it in the rain? A silver Evo?

nope
it was a white one,
i think the one your talking about is the clip from the high octane video (2/3?)

umm
im probably wrong though

:) :) :)

Yeah, HO 2.

Hmm, the guy that owned it couldn't do a doughnut, so a different guy got in, bouncing off redline he was spinning all over the place. He stopped, floored it, drooped the clutch, boom, there goes the gearbox.

LOL!!
yeah
ahahahhaha

but the clip of the evo ive seen was from some where else..
took place in ..the u.k, i think it was

have you seen high octane four?
its pretty cool
;) ;) ;)

Yeah I bought it about two weeks after it came out.

I still think HO2 is the best, HO4 is a little ****ty to put it bluntly.

I did it in a 180SX once. Dunno, guess it was cuz of an older car, the rear wheels locked then it started to wheel hop and then the tranny blew out. Im betting it had some major internal problems by the looks of it.... it started somking, coulda been just from the tranny blowing out tho.

For those asking why, it was a car that we were taking to the scrap yard, so hey, why not do somehting stupid. But note I was NOT the driver
