"In case you didn’t notice it, the new trailer features the absolutely banger of a track that is ‘Instigators’ by Grace Potter – just one of the songs from the amazing in-game soundtrack that has been created for DiRT 4 in an exclusive partnership with Globe, Universal Music UK’s in-house sync team. The agreement with Globe will see over 40 licensed tracks appear throughout the game, matching DiRT’s unique style and tone, and including exclusive tracks from artists such as The Amazons, Sigma, Freak and Pretty Vicious alongside tracks from The Chemical Brothers, Disclosure, Queens Of The Stone Age and Bastille." - Codemasters Blog

Does it have simulation value?
DiRT 4 features two distinct handling models, gamer handling and sim handling. "Gamer is like DiRT 3 but better, and Sim is DiRT Rally but better" (Gamer and Sim leaderboards are separate entities).

Service park and engineer gameplay mechanics, alongside full car tuning, return from DiRT Rally.

Does it have real WRC rally stages?
No. These stages are now legally tied to the World Rally Championship license; since DiRT 4 is not the official WRC game, they are not included. Stages are instead generated with the "Your Stage" feature.

What is "Your Stage"?

A rally stage generator, taking into account location, length, complexity and weather. These random stages can be shared with friends, and used in online leagues or PvP.

Stages used in career mode events have been curated from this random generator, and feature dedicated leaderboards.

Does it have PvP online rallies?
Yes.

Does it support VR?
"With regards to VR, it’s something that we will be looking at once we’ve seen people’s reaction to DiRT Rally on PSVR."

Does it have a rally school?
Yes.

"The new DirtFish Rally School in Washington will also host your first few steps as a racing driver, where Jen Horsey will teach you all of the tips and tricks you’ll need to confidently throw your car around a stage. The school also doubles as a free practice zone for all of your vehicle-tuning needs, where you’ll instantly be able to test new vehicles and new setups."

Does it have a photo mode?
No. "I can share that we won't be shipping with a Photomode. It is one of those things that we'd want to do properly and there simply isnt enough time to get a polished photomode in game without losing something more important."

Does it have splitscreen?
Nope

Will it be on Nintendo Switch?
Nuh-uh

Where's Pikes Peak, and the hillclimb cars?
In DiRT Rally. According to Eurogamer, "Gran Turismo now has sole rights to Pikes Peak".

Does it have a livery editor?
"Now, moving onto your livery. It’s not a fully customisable livery that you can design and upload yourselves, but we’ve given you the tools, patterns and designs to create your very own, extraordinarily smart-looking team ‘theme’, which all of your vehicles will be equipped with."

What! I recall them saying they were done after DiRT Rally? Good to see the series again, and I hope it leans more towards traditional rallying as opposed to the gymkhana and what nots of the previous iterations.

If the driving experience is anything like DiRT Rally I'm in. Here's what I had to say about that game when doing my Game of the Year writeup:

Finally, a racing game that isn't afraid to challenge you. The only way to do well in DiRT Rally is to take the punishment it provides and understand why your car speared sideways off of that bump and into the nearest tree.

This isn't a game that is difficult for the sake of being difficult however (hello Trackmania Turbo), there is a method to its madness and once you climb its various mountains (both physical and metaphorical) there is a great sense of achievement and skill progression, one that will make you a better driver in almost any racing game going forward.

This is also a game where you need to be 100% focused on the task at hand at all times. You need to pay attention to what's coming up, you need to be aware of what your co-driver is telling you and you need to be aware that your rally could end at any moment. Most racing games allow you to drive on "autopilot" once you achieve a certain level of proficiency, where your muscle memory and knowledge of a game's physics is enough to see you drive at race-winning speed while your mind wanders or has conversations with itself. This is not one of those games; drop your attention for a second and you will regret it.

From the Eurogamer article:

Dirt 4 seems to be building on the success of 2015's Dirt Rally, with a focus on realism as well as a little extra accessibility thrown in to boot. It'll carry the official FIA World Rallycross Championship license, including settings such as Lohéac Bretagne, Hell, Holjes & Lydden Hill, while it'll also introduce dirt track racing in buggies, trucks and crosskarts.

For more traditional rally, Dirt 4 boasts five locations - Australia, Spain, Michigan, Sweden and Wales - and a curious new feature dubbed 'Your Stage' which lets players choose their setting and define parameters before the game churns out a procedurally generated stage which can then be shared with friends. A career mode that takes in all the various disciplines also features, alongside improved multiplayer and cross-platform leaderboards.

The new game features off-road vehicles including the Ford Fiesta R5, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, Subaru WRX STI NR4 and Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2. With the official license of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Dirt 4’s tracks include Montalegre, Lohéac Bretagne, Hell, Holjes and Lydden Hill.

Since Evolution Studios has been part of Codemasters for a little while now, I wonder how much involvement they had with the graphics?

VERY excited for this. I loved Dirt Rally, just hope this one has a proper career mode and I'm in on day one.

So basically this is like Dirt 2, 3 and Rally combined into one amazing game

Well done Codemasters, this makes up for Showdown.

I noticed in the Red Bull article with interview: http://www.redbull.com/en/games/stories/1331841547561/dirt-4-interview-red-bull-games that there is no mention of photo mode. Does this mean it's still the same game engine as DiRT Rally.

I would search the other links but I have to go to work in like three minutes...sorry.

Haven't found anything on that as well but wasn't Dirt Rally done with the old engine and that it was used for the last time for that game? Would mean that Dirt4 uses the new engine which would make photomode possible. It is a musthave actually :)

Frankly I don't know why. It's like Project CARS announcing pCARS 2 when they could've just updated and improved the previous. DiRT Rally is pretty good as is, so why make a separate game? Either way, looking forward to what it will become...hopefully not another DiRT 3.

It sounds like a lot of new content. And there is a chance it may not be the hardcore sim dirt rally is, so I would say a new game is perfectly acceptable.

It's because it's not a pure Rally game like DIRT Rally is. Buggys etc. Hopefully nothing like last one & less Gymkhana bollocks

I really hope it keeps the DR physics

This is all they have to do.

They simply need a to provide the differing driving models. The mainline Dirt games are typically more casual oriented and in that regard I gather that we'll probably experience a typical semi-arcade physics model you would find in the previous numeric Dirt entries. However, Codemasters can strike a balance by allowing users to select and play with the more advanced driving model we all came to love in Dirt Rally.
