Sony Will Swerve E3 for the Second Year Running

In the year 2020 you have so many ways to comunicate with your base that something like E3 seems pretty obsolete TBH.

Why share the spotlight when you can have all the attention on really any other day of the year.

Imagine announcing your big thing only to be completetly overshadowed by another much bigger announcement later that day.

Nah.

Personally I really don´t care about Sony skipping E3. Seeing full CG trailers for games that are still 2 to 3 years out has lost its appeal to me

The Nintendo Direct format is probably something Sony is (or should be) looking at.

E3 has been a rampant cringefest and a temple to the frivolous waste of huge amounts of money ever since they closed it to the public, so I find Sony's continued absence a welcome blow.

They actually opened it to the public in 2017 for the first time and kept it that way in the following years - it was closed before.

Yeah right you are dunno how I got that twisted around.

I would still rather drink any number of automotive lubricants rather than attend.

Sounds like Sony is the antisocial rich kid that doesn't want to compete with its piers. To bad for the gamers that like a good gaming show...

This really seems to be about E3 specifically and not about competing.

We will get our shows, just not E3:

“After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.

“We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”

Sounds more like Sony doesn't see the value in spending a titanic amount of money on E3, it's almost as if they have data that informs them they don't make any money advertising there.

Sony markets its products through basically every form of media and its own online store so they are hardly losing out on visibility by not attending. E3 is going the way of the dodo if it can't provide a valuable reason for companies to take part.

Sony isn't scared of its competitors, it's smarter than them. I honestly don't believe attending or not attending will affect their position in the market whatsoever. If they weren't willing to compete with their peers, I highly doubt they'd release another console.

As I said in the other thread, **** the ESA. They've been systematically messing with E3 and failing to keep it relevant... only then to doxx a 2000 odd professionals who registered to go to it. And with there strategy for this years having being leaked, it sounds like a nightmare.

If I was Sony I wouldn't want my brand associated with such a mess and would rather not subject the people working to cover my launch to be at risk

Smart move by Sony, E3 has become a place where some game developer studios are lying to their fans, Bethesda with the 16 times the detail lie about Fallout 76 and the big dissapointment for me to find out it was also a multiplayer game (my fault, not Bethesda's), last year Bethesda talked more about mobil games than console/PC games, BioWare's Anthem gameplay was not actual gameplay at all.

So do your own thing Sony, E3 will not be missed by me.

There's a strategy at play here, Sony clearly wants more fanfare, and will no doubt want to get its hype machine rumbling before Microsoft, indeed why go head to head at the same event when you can beat them to the punch? Much as im excited by the new consoles coming having been through this cycle so many times, it will inevitably be an anticlimax. Software is more important than hardware and early titles in a consoles life tend to be a bit meh... I will be holding off until must have software drops which is usually 3 years after launch...

I mean, is this really true? The PS4 destroyed the Xbone at that E3... I mean Sony execs where literally mocking the Xbox's new features, during the presentation. IMO this is more of a direct shot at the ESA.

Why hold off when PS5 have backward compatibility to PS4 games (Edit. That's not 100% guaranteed just yet though.)? I will buy the PS5 as soon as possible and move my PS4 games over to the 1 TB SSD drive, if the PS5 can play PS4 games :).

Im happy with the Pro but the SSD is a tempter my laptop now runs super sweet since I upgraded the HD. If the PS5 somehow upgraded existing PS4 titles with ray tracing etc that would be a tempter too.

Perhaps a bit of both? Getting in first is usually important in business, perhaps digital is more important than trade show these days in getting the hype bandwagon rolling... The tech specs seem to be broadly the same so marketing is going to be a key part of the console launches this time, might as well start banging the drum ASAP?

E3 has been a disappointment for a while but it doesn't have to be. This kind of treatment is another shot at a long running gaming celebration. Oh well......

CES and MWC seem pretty relevant and popular, as are many other trade shows. I don't understand why E3 should be any different.

Maybe it's just that the traditional gaming industry has shrunk since the advent of apps, or rather app games.

CES, for instance, makes sense because companies are showing mostly new physical products / hardware, notaking announcements for products/software coming down the line. Costumers can experience everything at CES and being there is mandatory, for the most part.

Now, with E3, most of what people tune in for is the announcements of games / consoles. Most of the hype and interest is focused on presentations that can very well be streamed worldwide.

It's very rare for something new (and substantial) to be announced at E3 while st the same time being available to play on the show floor.

Gamescom is more viable and interesting atm than E3 imo. Because it offers way more to the public. It doesn't have as many big announcements, but those, we can get at home, while commuting, seating on our sofas or laying on our beds, depending on the timezone. Then we can go to games om to put our hands on the games.

I did a mistake, watching E3 live in previous year, like many others, pulled off mid show. It was very boring and there was like nothing to see.

Well we saw Nintendo stop having big presentations at E3 years ago(with admittingly me questioning it at the time) and now Sony is doing it. Interesting question now lies in how long before Microsoft decide to also ditch having this big presentations at E3. Will they also feel like their investment isn't worth it anymore?

Also, regarding E3: I have to admit, E3 has sorta lost a lot of magic it once had. Sure they finally had the sense to open up its doors to the public (you know, the people these companies are actually trying to sell their products to) but when that isn't even enough to stop Sony from no longer having their big Press Conferences or even persuade Nintendo to come back, kinda says a lot. Frankly, what purpose does this event even serve anymore? What can fans get their that they can't get anywhere else? I kinda feel like it only ever existed and lasted so long because it was basically an exclusive club of sorts and there wasn't nearly as many outlets for the big three to do their thing nor as many places for the biggest reveals to hype up the fans. Nowadays? CES, SDCC and NYCC, TGS and Gamescom are pretty solid places for people to get their info and trailers and announcements for games AND they've been open to the public for waaay longer then E3. So again, What purpose does E3 serve anymore now that people can find all this stuff elsewhere? The moment Microsoft decides to stop is the moment this event is truly dead regardless of whether Bethesda, EA, Ubisoft or anyone else show up. At the moment, its on life Support and frankly, I don't predict it'll be enough to pull it through in the next two years.

Surprising. I was pretty sure they will announce the price and release date at E3. But if they have their own event, it is probably better. Obviously they will have to spend million $ anyways in advertising PS5 and some big games coming for PS4 also this year. GT has had very little presence at their conferences anyways. Mostly COD and other games are being shown.

I would also add all the games shown that have no plans of being released before the next E3
