4k 120Hz TV's and GT7 PS5, worth it?

I should be taking delivery of the Phillips "The One" 50 inch 4k 120Hz TV tomorrow. Oooo. While not specifically designed for next gen gaming it has features with that in mind like a gaming bar (live stats of the TV's performance). It also has anti-latency ALLM and VRR.

So 120fps PS5 and 120Hz TV...

I've been using a 32 inch 15 year old LCD screen, which basically has none of these features and runs on coal, so I'm hoping to see a difference. I'll take 0.1s lap time improvement any day and just being able to see my braking points without eye strain.

I'll report back if no-one has their own experiences.

It should look and run great, you have nothing to worry about. If smoothness is a big concern then a monitor is the way to go.

If you're just planning on playing GT7, the 120fps and VRR features are not needed. GT7 currently does not support VRR, although it's possible they could patch it in at a future date. It already runs at a relatively stable 60fps, although there are dips in some scenarios. There are plenty of other games that support VRR however, so it would be good if you plan to play other stuff.

If you're playing on an old monitor currently, the big differences you're going to notice are the 4k image quality and HDR. They'll make the picture look much better than what you're used to.

I will try other games, like ac2 when it comes out. I thought kaz was talking about gt7 running 120fps? Still, no more 1000 yard squint looking for the braking markers at le manns.

My old TV was... old. 1920's silent movies create motion blur.

So far the only 2 games i tried that made use of vrr looked so poor i went back to 60fps (dirt5 & crew2) looks and plays lovely on my pc though FH5 runs 100fps 4k no issues Forza 8 should look even better.

I got 42" LG C2 oled , GT7 looks amazing in HDR - i just wish they give us 120hz mode with VRR but even without that with oled you still getting less latency 😎

I run it on a roughly 20 inch RCA flat screen and a PS5 disc edition. The SSD is a Crucial P5. We've been in a few races together, I think that's when we were running Le Mans in Race C.
I always get stutter on Tokyo East on the back side of the track and on Road Atlanta on the hard left after the S turns, especially if I'm on the gas.
I've no complaints, though. The setup is sufficient for me to see your car well...even in the rearview mirror. 🤪
See ya in game soon.

Got it. Running in 4k HDR 60Hz for GT7. Amazingly crisp but I need to get used to the new fov.

What I didn't expect is the "Ambilight". It's brilliant! (40 LEDs on the back of the tv that change colour depending on what's going on on the screen). Really feels like you're going through shadows. And passing under the shadow of a bridge in daylight is totally immersive! Really feels like you're there because the light in the whole room changes.

I was expecting to turn this off, but having tried it... no way! :) haha still chuckling.

Can't wait to try a night race when it's dark outside.

I had a TCL Series 6 for about a month, but after the first couple weeks I began noticing a dirty screen effect on the panel. It became very apparent when in rain races or any ti.e the screen is mostly a mid-grey tone, which is almost all of GT7... Anyway, I returned that and picked up a Sony X90K. Much better panel than the TCL but it has some blooming issues that are only really noticed on the dark transition screens when entering the races. The mini-LED TCL didn't have these issues, but that dirty screen was driving me crazy.

I mostly play GT7 but I do have some other games that may, or may not, take advantage of 120hz or VRR. I try not to dig too deep in the weeds with all these specs, but I do know from previous experience that 120hz (to me) always looks better than a 60hz panel. I haven't found definitive proof that VRR is necessary but I'm sure once someone points it out to me it will be something I can never unsee and will thus become a requirement from then on.

John from Digital Foundry said that VRR is much preferred when playing Ragnarok in 120hz mode. My LG C series has VRR so I didn't notice any screen tearing but supposedly it's an issue.

I dont have Ragnarock. Just GT7, Horizon Forbidden West, Stray, Elders Ring and Spider Man. Not sure if the other games take advantage if VRR, but it sounds like GT7 doesn't need it.

One thing Sony and LG still hasn't gotten right is turning on both with the push of the PS5 button. The Series X does this, but for PS5/LG OLED combo it cant. Its a first world problem, but in 2023, it should not be.

Spider-Man uses VRR in its hybrid Fidelity mode.

Turn on HGIG on the LG. Mine turns on at the press of the PS button on the controller.

I have a LG CX series OLED. Whenever I turn on the PS5, it enters game mode. I assumed that was what game mode did. Is it not?

I would always have to turn the CX on with the LG remote. I've looked this up and no solution. Press PS5 button to turn on PS5, press power button on LG remote. I can't turn on both with PS5 controller.

TBH, i actually dont play much, this isnt the GT game I've known to come and love, that died with GT4 and older GT games.

My mistake, I misunderstood what you were saying. I absolutely have to turn on the CX with the "magic" remote and the PS5 with the controller. I thought you meant that your tv wasn't switching to "automatic game response" as soon as you hit your PS button and you had to manually switch it to game mode.

Turn on HGIG.

Just curious on latest TV's with higher refresh rate. Hdmi 2.1 especially. Does it help your lap times. I'm still on a PS4 pro. Waiting till the newer Ps5 is out till I decide but I'm using a TV that is 10 years old at least. TV & Ps5 is on the list for some of my upgrades. But has the OP noticed the difference lap time wise. When I went from a G29 to a GT DD Pro I could see the difference. Would better TV do something similar.

Gt7 doesn't support 120hz (yet?)

When I went from 60 to 144hz on pc I could see the enemies in csgo but my reaction time sucked and only got better with more playing. I think the same will apply for racing games/"simulators" and 120 (or more) hz

Make sure you get a HDMI 2.1 cable - it makes the difference when VRR comes

Edit: I pretty sure that the cable that comes with the PS5 is a 2.1

If we do get features like VRR, 120fps and dynamic resolutions in GT7. I expect it's because such things have been looked into, when getting the PS VR2 version up and running. Otherwise PD seem pretty wedded to 4k/60fps.

It is. You need 2.1 for 120Hz/120fps and my ps5 will let my tv use that refresh rate but it reverts to 60Hz/60fps when launching GT7. That sound right?
Yeh sounds right . Did you pick up dirt5 when it was the free monthly give away ? that will let you test 120fps mode in the game option set performance visuals but i didn't like the drop in Res same with crew 2 i kept missing the junction's a bit like wearing the VR it goes kinda blurry probably better used for shooters.

From what I have seen every game drops detail when running 120fps (seen reviews online). Only an exclusive 120fps game wouldn't but with the lack of users with the required tv's/monitors, who would write one?

They need to unlock it for all the older games that wouldn't need to lower any visuals to run 120 on a ps5 but people do seem to bang on about ray tracing etc or give us 1440p
