62 Elan vs 04 MX5 what does 42 yrs of development bring?

Having spent many nights racing GT3 with the one of the driving forces of the Mazda MX5 (Bob Hall), and having recalled that Bwob said that they benchmarked the development of the MX-5 against the Elan, I thought it would be interesting to compare the two (a 62 Elan vs 04 MX5 1800 RS).

I've run 2 tracks that are polar opposites and suit both cars, Tsukuba, and Nurburgring, both in A spec as:

1. My B spec driver Hans is still a second or three off my pace
2. I wanted to feel the difference in driving both back to back

Both cars were stock no oil change, no set up tuning

First up was Tsukuba, one of my favourite small car tracks, with the Elan running first.
The Elan is an absolute blast to drive, underpowered by todays standards but has a remarkably agile feel, no corrections needed, no sliding and was pretty much nailed the whole way

Lap time: 1'07.690

Next the MX-5, needed more shoulder work to hustle into corners and understeered more than the Elan.

Lap time: 1'09.991

Next up was Nordschleife, where I anticipated that the MX-5 with it's extra grunt up and down the straights would compensate for the hiding it got at Tuskuba.

Again the Elan went first and by lap 2 I'd had the the little beast nailed to the floor, maxing out at 111 mph. The fluidity in change of direction was awesome and I just wanted to continue on and on, after lap 3 I knew there was bugger all improvement left in the car (more in the driver I'm sure)

Lap time 8'52.775

Next up the MX-5, and after 4 restarts for spins and tank slappers I finally got into it's groove, however there was a fair bit of wheel, and throttle control required to keep it on the black stuff, but with a top speed of 130mph I thought it might be a close run thing. Wrong again!!

Lap time 8'58.758

The MX-5 felt underdamped, overweight, and flexy, lets hope the NC is in GT5!

So what does 42 years of development bring?

The Elan 62 still spanks todays classic sports car!

Obviously a more comfortable daily driver for your commute, but when it comes to the track give me the original every day

Hat's off to Colin Chapman for understanding that weight is a track cars worst enemy
👍 👍 👍

Edited because I previously gave the MX5 the Elans time at the Ring D'oh

Looks like the Miata beat the Elan at Nurbugring.. right??

By 6 seconds....

Nice write-up mate - good job 👍

And good to see that 42 is no age ;)

OOPs sorry guys I gave the Elans time at the ring to the MX5 ..late night posting

The Elan wins this comparo and is much easier at the limit :) :)

Yes Phil I've been thinking about doing the classic Nur again in the Elan.

Did you win stock or did you mod it in any way?

I last won in in the Chevelle monster (fully worked) however I just adored the nailed to the floor zen like momentum of the stock Elan...gonna do that tomorrow :)

More proof of my theory that cars are getting fatter and slower. Nice test idea BTW 👍

Yuo proved that 42 years of Develoment got no where (on a track). You should try the 'pop up' original MX-5 IMO they are the most pure, lighter no airbags and Momo steering wheel as standard (nicer shape too ;) )

Thanks OG, phat P

911GT3 - I ran the 89 at Tuksuba and recorded a 1'13.582, pretty much in line with real life performance and way off the Elans pace, I certainly don't have the patience to run the ring with it.

In real life it is also the case that the NB8C's 200-2004 are quickest around the track, due to larger capacity 1839cc with VVT, a stiffer chassis and ABS.

Stock class at Wakefield (think Tuskuba / Midfield kind of track) the lap records are
NA6A 89-92 1'19.1
NA8A 93-97 1'17.8
NB8A 98-99 1'17.2
NB8C 00-04 1'16.7

I hold the lap record for normally aspirated MX5's at the track with a 1'13.58 (92 NA6A)
The quickest road registerd MX5 is also a 1.6L (179RWKw turbo) with a 1'06.9!

Considering that you can buy my car for $12,000 it makes for great cheap(ish) racing 👍

mmm... sounds interesting. Currently doing 1:23.4 on an 04 smart roadster at wakefield. Lots of fun but the gearbox is the pits....
