Apparently, he was going to annual remembrance ceremony in Hawaii, when the ticket agent told him “The government only allows us to weigh so much and we’re overweight. We’ve got to take you off and that’s all there is to it.”

He was upset and depressed because he had paid for his seat and didn't get reimbursed.

He did make it to the ceremonies though, later on.

I'm really not seeing how this is a big deal, he was bumped from a flight(which happens to all kinds of people every day) and was re-booked on a different flight at no extra cost from what I've read. Sounds to me like he was treated better than most airline passengers.

Also, according to the airline quote, 40 other people were also bumped, where's the outrage for them?

But guys, Fox News said it was important and that we should be mad, so lets get mad. Kay?

Dem Liberals ruining Murica with their policies and rules based on physics and safety, driving the country straight into the ground dem Godless Marxists.

This was all over my local Hawaii news a couple days ago. He just got bumped, not kicked off. If anything it caused him an inconvenience on his flight here.

All in all it's not a big deal, just that a vet almost missed a ceremony he attends annually due to unfortunate circumstances.

I think it has more to do with bumping a 90yo. Pearl Harbor survivor than just bumping someone. Give the guy a break!

Fairly certain airlines use a "snooze you lose" policy when it comes to bumping people, they didn't pick and chose who got bumped. Plus he was far from the only one bumped.

United issued a statement that reads, “Severe weather in the path of United flight 1226 required the flight to carry additional fuel and reduce the number of passengers on board by 41.”

Also, the guy could get up to $1,300 for his troubles as per guidelines.

almost missed a ceremony

Guessing you are using the term "almost" rather loosely? Seems this ordeal took place on the 4th and unless they did their ceremony early, Remembrance Day is on the 7th.

Was I the only one who was lured here because I thought this was about kicking someone off a plane mid-flight?
This bothers me to no end about society. The nature of this comment is humorous but has absolutely nothing to do with the events in question. Luckily on GTP the amount of likes a post gets has nothing to do with its prominence on the page - on a site like Reddit, the completely-off-topic-yet-funny post is the one which inevitebly ends up at the top of the list, completely defeating the purpose of the original poster who was undoubtedly interested in starting a serious discussion.

I made a post just like this, the second in the thread. I personally think it was more clever but hey that's not the point. The point is that the majority of people are not interested in a serious discussion of anything, only a quick laugh. And that's why the world sucks and nothing important ever gets done.

Not sure why he's more deserving than anyone else. Airlines have really started to treat their customers like crap, the customers need to start voting with their feet.

It's also based on class of service, frequent flier status, how much you paid for your tickets (fare class), and how long it took you to check-in (everyone has the same 24 hour limit).

Unfortunate, but 40 others were affected. Still, I think they'd overloaded the plane with cargo - something that airlines do for transcontinental flights, because it's a great money-maker.

He got a big bunch of "sucks to be you". But it's not as if every passenger is aware of every other passenger on the ground. Folks probably boarded by their zone, and had no idea until they'd closed the door what was going on, because I've been on planes where weight considerations came into play. Too late, by then.

I love when people complain about things like this. It's like when I work at the gym and we have a limited amount of spots for a popular exercise class. "What?! You already gave out the 65 spots? I'm only 5 minutes late, can you make an exception for me?"

Uh.... no. I can't. There's this dude called a fire marshall and he'd be really mad at me if I let you in to a room that's already filled to capacity.

"I'm only five minutes late! I can't believe you gave out all of the tickets already!"

Well... we actually ran out of spots 5 minutes before the class started... You know what, go for it. Get in there and get me yelled at by the group ex director - who happens to be the one teaching that class you're late for.

Imagine if they let him on the plane and then it takes off overweight. And then crashes.
