If one installs an ssd drive in the expansion slot of the PS5 does it assist with processing power, such as GT7 performance as it relates to the smoothness in races? Or is it just a memory thing?

It's just more storage, the days of storing some common RAM processes on an SSD are long gone

It's just more storage.

And unless it's a really high-end M.2 SSD, the main storage of the PS5 actually does perform better (it's optimized after all).

Seeing that the game is 100gigs already and it will likely increase significantly with updates, I may have to buy one of the 2Tb gen4 m.2 ssds, but they are still way too expensive.
