A great idea for a camera view!

What is your opinion on the playable replay camera?

After looking to a nice replay of mine drifting around I had a great idea. What if you can drive your car while on replay camera? :dopey:

You may recall that something like this exists in Grand Theft Auto. Similarly in GT6 the camera might not be exactly the replay views, as they are often impractical, but can be a top-down view, as if from a helicopter, which is cool and also gives you a nice image of your racing line.

This option could be selected from the pause screen and not assigned to the select button (or there can be an option for the player to do that) because it is very different in feel from the other camera views and can be confusing and cost a good lap. And of course there could be 2 replay cameras. The standard and the top-down, more driving friendly, camera.

In other words, GT6 needs an in-game camera that is focused on the track and atmosphere. We already have plenty of cameras focusing on the car. ;)

I dont think thats such a good idea imagine how hard it would be to control the car.

True, at least for the replay views, since the top-down should be easy after a while.

But there are ways around this, for example you could have a mini screen at the screen corner with your own view.

It's even hard to use this camera in GTA IV while driving yourself, now imagine it with real physics like in GT... unneeded addition I think.

I'd rather have better 3rd person views, one being a truly wide angle, and one closer to the car, like in most other games (take the new NFS Most Wanted as example), with some more movement and a free 360° view on right stick if we want to assign our buttons that way. Of course the cameras in most other games have a pretty arcade-y movement, they shouldn't exaggerate it like this, but the current one always felt a bit too stiff to me.

Oh and we need a proper hood camera too, on some cars (e.g. Maserati Gran Turismo S) the current one is mounted on the roof, which is a really irritating position, for me at least. On other cars (e.g. Aston Martin V12 Vantage) it's directly mounted on the hood like it should be. And on a few cars with small shapes (e.g. the Suzuki Cervo) the camera is mounted in a way it just points to the floor, which makes it useless. They should find a general position working on all cars.

Definitely agree on the hood camera, it's my go to camera in any game and it moves around in GT5 as you say, most on the roof.

It wasn't a good idea in GTA
It wasn't a good idea in Driver
It wasn't a good idea ever.

I don't mean any offense, (Though I'm sure it's going to come across that way) but it's an entirely pointless prospect.
What we need is some kind of controllable replay camera. /that/ would be a 'great idea'.

But in my opinion? this one isn't one. If you want something focusing on the scenery the controllable replay system would be far better suited, it would just be impossible to drive with either of the camera options you're proposing

You can do that in almost every single simulator on PC.

I use to do that to take pictures without using replays. But driving the car is like driving an RC Car and feels weird of course. Useless for what you are thinking.

But Gran Turismo needs a little bit more camera angles for replays for sure.

It's a no brainer, yes we should have it. Easy to do and useful, especially if combined with a record function (video analogue of photo mode).

Top down view would also probably useful for "unofficial" online modes, such as ones that require the car to be in certain positions, etc.

Bizarre Creations did this with F1 97 on the original Playstation - you had to plug in a second controller to bring up extra camera options, Polyphony should definitely give us more freedom with camera positioning in GT6.

Sounds a bit complicated.

It'd be just like the rear-view mirrors. There might be issues if the two camera frustums capture completely different geometry (memory-wise), but technically it's already possible.

Add in camera control as well and this might be getting somewhere for those who like to make films.
