Milton Friedman (July 31, 1912 – November 16, 2006) was an American economist who made major contributions to the fields of macroeconomics, microeconomics, economic history and statistics while advocating laissez-faire capitalism. In Capitalism and Freedom (1962) he advocated minimizing the role of government in a free market in order to create political and social freedom. In 1976, he won the Nobel Prize for Economics for his achievements in the fields of consumption analysis, monetary history and theory and for his demonstration of the complexity of stabilization policy.[1] His television series Free to Choose aired on PBS in early 1980. It became a book, co-authored with his wife, Rose Friedman. The book was widely read, as were his columns for Newsweek magazine.

He was a major influence in my life and in the lives of many. Those of us who knew his work will miss him.

He was the mentor to the last Fed Chairman...your right a huge influence that few people know about or appreciate .

I personally loved it when he kicked Jimmy Carters butt when he screwed up the economy.

I'm old I remember stuff..

its a miracle !

He’ll be missed, definitely. And ledhed’s totally right – most people don’t know the tremendous influence he had on Greenspan.

Yo ...not for anything ,,,most younger people dont realize how screwed we were BEFORE greenspan and what he accomplished at the Fed...he is like the Wizard of oz....who is the man behind the curtain...the US could have suffered another " depression " instead of the recession we went through .

Not many people appreciate the influence of the man behind the curtain.

When I was in my economics class last year, my Professor wouldn't stop going on, and on, and on about how much Friedman was wrong about things. Of course, my Professor is a Socialist, so everyone is wrong in America...

He will be missed. Although my economics education is somewhat limited, I did enjoy reading (some of) his work.

Sorry to say I've never heard of him but I am proud to say danoff's quoted material stirred great interest in my thoughts regarding his work. 👍

A Socialist teaching economics is like a Catholic priest teaching birth control or Kissinger teaching the Pentagon how to succeed in Iraq. Ask your old prof how many Nobel Prizes he's been awarded.

Mr. Friedman should be awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor. For helping win the Cold War. Or at least a Silver Star at any rate.

EDIT: Okay, anal me had to go check. He only qualifies for a Distinguished Service Medal. Well at any rate he should have a ship named after him or something.

Amen to that. I hadn't heard he died until last night, when my brother-in-law sent me a similar obituary.

Thanks for everthing, Mr. Friedman!
