AC version .5 added AI for the first time. Came out today, unfortunately i'm stuck at work. Lets hear some reports about them.

I'll be taking a look at it in an hour or something, after it updates! Let's hope it brings something great!

Well the AI is okay but its not great. They dont seem to care if you are going slow infront of them and they just run into your ass.....

The TL;DR version is they're not bad.

I've done three races.

First in the M30 Grp A @ Mugello. Medium difficulty. I was going to put it on Easy, then I thought "nah, I've been playing sims for a while, that'd just be a waste of time". So on medium, I drove my ass off and got 4th. Admittedly, I spun it once and got a cut corner penalty, but this is not GT6 levels of easiness. The first few corners were a bit bump and grind, but nothing too overtly aggressive and once it spaced out they were good.

Second, Supercars @ Silverstone in the 458. Medium again. First corner is a nightmare, the AI just can't deal with it. Again, once they space out it's OK. I think it's more to do with the difference in performance in the cars. I finished in 6th, 4 seconds behind the lead 458 and like 20 seconds behind the winner in a 12c. I didn't even wait to see how far behind the E92s and Lotuses were.

Third, back to M30 @ Mugello to see what Alien difficulty does. I didn't really notice any difference in the general behaviour, but they're a lot faster. I really, really struggled to hold it in 10th (of 12), no off tracks or penalties and running fairly consistent 2:07s but I'm just not quick enough.

I got brake checked through 13 on one lap, but then not again the next lap. Dunno what went on there. Otherwise the AI was good, didn't turn onto me when I made a dive, made a couple early defensive moves, it was cool.

The damage model seems overly sensitive. I get red bits on the display from the lightest of taps, but then I think I've got damage off so it doesn't really matter. I'll have to look into that more later

Bad things:
-First few corners will range from "stop scraping my doors" to "WTF!?!"
-Graphical hit is pretty big.

Good things:
-they quick.
-one on one they're quite considerate.

As a beta version of AI, I think they're pretty acceptable. There's some stuff that they can make better, but they're very playable, and best of all very challenging.

Really? I've got a penalty a few times and they've got around me OK. The only times they've run into the back of me is in a crowd. On the other hand, I've run up the back of them because I wasn't looking far enough ahead countless times so I think it's fair. :)

Just raced the supercars @ Silverstone. Not perfect but very fun -- the graphics are just beautiful, I just love how realistic the sim looks, from the smoke effects when they lock up their tires to the body roll when turning / braking. Awesome.

Like Imari said, definitely not GT level of difficulty. I did find that once I tried to make a pass on them (and being cleanish) the AI didn't really fight for their position, they slowed a bit and let me take it which isn't good.

EDIT: The sound is pretty good also -- though a bit exaggerated. You can hear when the AI is creeping up on you, you can tell whether they're behind you, to your left, right, or swerving left and right, though a little bit too loud and from too far away. They also added achievements for each race and each AI level. :)

Yes, I've done a few more races in the 500, and they do seem to give up once you're past. I was trailing the leader for a lap and a half trying to find a way past, and in the half lap to the end after I got past I gained nearly 2 seconds on him. Maybe he was slowing me up that much, but I don't think so.

Also, the crash noises are awful. Awfully awful. I was wishing that they could replace it with "kick a bucket" from GT5 awful.

It still has a bit of a GT feel with forced starting from the back, to be honest. It's OK with the variable difficulty in that you can at least find something suitable for you, but it's still not quite racing. It'll be good once they add qualifying in.

For some reason winning on higher difficulties doesn't award you medals for the lower difficulties as well. Could be intentional, but I'm guessing it's just a screw up.

The more I play it, the more beta it feels. Don't get me wrong, it's fun but there's a lot that can be improved. Definitely a solid base to build from though.

P.S. If you want an easy win, race the 500 and put semi-slicks on.

Eh, yeah, starting from the back seems GTish but it's a sim, it's meant to be raced primarily against other people. I'm guessing AI will just be another "feature", like in LFS. It definitely feels beta. It is a beta. :P

Regarding damage, I think the car drawing that displays when you damage your car is only showing you what part of the car you've damaged, not how severe you damaged it. I played with damage on and I found that the damage wasn't so severe even with mild red-colored crashes. Anything harder than that and the car became difficult to drive.

I never bought this argument. There's nothing about a sim that says you need to race against other humans.

There are times when it's much easier and more appropriate to sit down and play against the computer. And in those cases, it'd be nice if the AI was good.

RE: Sound, AC support left this message on the forums

"A quick workaround is to change the COCKPIT_OCCLUSION value in the sfx/engine.ini. It changes the opponents engine volume when you're in your cockpit."

This definitely worked for me. You have to edit the .ini for each of the 4 cars we are currently able to race.

No standing starts and ai that gives up is not very encouraging....

It doesn't give up exactly, and it'll go side by side with you for a few corners, but once you're past I haven't seen any of them coming back at me.

But yeah, catching up to them on Alien is a whole thing by itself. They're very, very fast.

And Supermoney has already pointed out that it's all standing starts. You don't generally gain heaps of places off the line either, they're quite good at starting.

I have to say while the AI is really good, the frame hit I got was terrible! I know I haven't got a powerful laptop, but I could run AC at 30fps constantly on any track any car and any time. Stick in the AI and suddenly I am down to 4fps... really couldn't use it. I'm dumping it onto my pc now, to see what happens with a pc that has double the power.

No problems with FPS for me, but I do have a fairly decent PC build.
Only had a quick go, and I found even the 'easy' setting harder then anything in GT.

Had the AI ram me once or twice in slower corners, and a couple of brake checks but nothing like the ones you get in GT.

I found the AI would back off shortly after I had passed them but if I made a mistake , they were right there and ready to challenge for the position. Its a good start for sure and lots of fun.

Not my video:

I just ran it on my pc now... AI are really quite good in my opinion, a little slow at times and sometimes a little too aggressive, but my word was it fun!

On a seperate note... 80fps with AI and a massive 150fps without! I've NEVER played a game with more than a stable 60 (and that is Rise of Nations) in my life!

I found the frame rate hit less than expected. I have things set up for around 100-130fps when driving by myself on tracks, that dropped down to 70-90fps at the back of the grid, but as soon as the field strings out it's back up to 100-120fps again. I actually turned some settings up because I had prepared for a heavier AI fps penalty.

Currently the first few corners are rather chaotic and a bit too much contact, then things get more decent. I did find the Abarth 500s were dive bombing the corners and parking on the apex somewhat, but that's about the only really strange behavior.

AI
I like
Taking the inside line for the first corner in the E30 race is pure suicide though hahaha.
Very aggressive for AI IMO, but that's kind of what you want... AI that defends their position and drives like a human

I have had a few experiences where i over sped into a corner and the AI behind me over took me, very clean
but i have gotten bumped off the track a few times when i was on the blocking line xD

Hey, more power to you! I've always been a strong supporter of having options. Having options helps a wide array of players enjoy the game the way they want to. :)

man I woke up this morning and didn't have a single reply. Me personally the Ai seems okay but I really haven't given it alot of attention yet. I've been practicing for the 2.4hrs of Daytona on iceRacing. Really looking forward to multiplayer as I think that's were this game is gonna shine. Seems like it will have quite a nice following and that in turn will make for some good racing.

I tried hard mode on the silverstone challenge and its... hard. I might just suck at driving but I could only get 6th in that race. Gonna try medium.

AI is better than I initially thought. There's still a few WTF moments, but is still really good considering it's the first beta release of AI and it's still more impressive than a lot of the competition (even at this stage).

That Silverstone challenge is depressing though. Maybe it's because I suck at that car (and rarely drove it as a result), but I'm not even going to admit to where I've finished. And how low I've dropped the difficulty level. LOL

I'm starting to dislike the AI, its not how hard it is its the fact they cheat by smashing you off the track. And when they do so nothing happens to the AI when it does it to you or when you do it to them. overall its better than gt6 but can be just as stupid. Although since its a beta and the developers actually ****ing listen to the community compared to PD I think it should be good at full release.

Edit: tried the formula abarth and its just annoying, every time there is a contact involving me nothing happens to the AI and I'm the one behind them doing a 360.

I've tried talking myself into it being mildly decent, but the fact is, it's pretty horrible right now. This is pretty par for the course IMO:

I pretty much held my wheel centered the entire straight. I drifted from the extreme outside, but that was just the topography changing (watch my steering wheel, it never leaves the center position), and the AI still had at least half the track. Instead it's the typical wild weaving and not only does he smash into my corner with this ahole weave, but he continues down the center of the track without even slowing a bit.

As proven by the above video, its not necessarily you crashing into the AI its the AI crashing into you. I'm surprised that AI is that bad in beta, I thought they would have made them aware of the players presence and make them behave like car's instead of trains before they shown us the AI.

No, you are right, they are crazy at times. I said I'm happy they can drive fast. I still have to watch out for them.

I have changed my opinion... The AI is actually really fun to race! They really try to pass you on the straits and they stay right on your tail the hole time. Just raced a 1v1 with Pagani Zonda R, great fun!

Update 0.6 released today and you can now choose which track, car and opponents you want to race aswell as how many laps and the number of cars on the track. Try it out if you havent already!

(sorry for my broken english, im a swede) ;)
