If public buses had a hand sanitizing dispenser, how would you use it?

Somewhat related to a thread a made awhile ago about class and public transportation, I now have a second question (In the poll above, so read carefully). Although we have much more sophisticated ways of determining these sort of things, I always like to bounce my ideas off gtplanet just to compare and contrast, so thank you for your vote. :)

And just to clarify, the system is electric. You simply stick your hand under it, and it dispenses a small but sufficient amount. It's also fairly quick. Even if you're never ridden a bus, you can still vote. Simply ask yourself what you would do if you did happen to ride a bus.

Also, if you find that the idea of a hand sanitizing system on a bus makes you more likely to ride that given bus, please comment. :)

What if you never use the bus, ever?

Whether you ride the bus or not does not restrict you from voting. You can vote regardless, simply ask yourself what you would do if you did happen to ride a bus.

Assuming it's that waterless alcohol based sanitizer, when exiting the bus is the only logical answer as you're undoubtedly going to pick something up while riding.

And for the record I haven't been on a public transportation bus in over 20 years.

I almost never use hand sanitizer.

This.

And I don't get sick. In fact I heard something the other day, can't remember where, that the guy said the biggest problem why kids get sick these days is that we sanitize things too much. Kids used to go outside and play in the dirt. Yes they would pick up germs, but your body gets used to them.

Someone agreed with me. I have no scientific data to back it up, but for the most part I do not get sick either. I've only had minor colds during the winter for about 4 years now, and it's usually just once.

I stopped getting the flu once I stopped getting the flu shot. Which basically goes against your theory of "getting used to things" :P.

But in all seriousness, I agree that we're probably too careful these days, and while there's no proof of it (insert conspiracy theories here as to why that is), I do tend to think we're more sick now because we try to fight it all off.

I ride public transit on a regular basis, and trains, and yet I've only been seriously, stay-in-bed sick once in the past 10 years.

I usually wash my hands when I get in to work or home from work when I've been using public transport. The people in this city generally aren't very hygienic.

If I'm travelling a lot in one day and know I will be on and of the train/ bus I sometimes keeps some wet wipes handy to clean my hands if I need to eat.

I have no idea if I should use it or not. Probably not.

If you consider a hand sanitizing dispenser, you should consider the possibility of airborn germs as well.

Germaphobia has never been a problem for me.

I don't think I'd ever use it to be honest. I'm not that bothered about getting ill, as I very rarely do.

Hand sanitizer? Whuzzat? :sly:

When I was a kid I actually played outside, in the dirt and such. I also spent a lot of time swimming in a creek, not a sanitized disinfected chlorinated pool.

Seriously, though, the only time I use any sort of sanitizer is when I've come in contact with genuinely yucky stuff.

What he said.

I'm a massive germaphobe but I see no reason to use if I don't touch anything on the bus.

To be honest, I don't do buses. At all; I'm not exactly a germaphobe but I don't think I could emotionally/mentally handle it :scared:

But if I did? Hand sanitizer FTW 👍

Not that I travel on buses (or trains?) that often. I might well use a sanitizer though. We have to sanitize our hands all the time at work since we're providing medical healthcare and pharmaceutical products, so I'm well in the habit of gettin' a squirt as I pass the dispenser on and off the factory floor.

I'm not a germophobe at all, but at work we have to be well aware of the effects that germs can have on other people, not just ourselves. I very rarely get ill, in fact I think the only illness I had over the past 5 years has been food poisoning, so I'm not too bothered for myself... however germs that most of us can easily shrug off or not notice may be fatal to somebody with cystic fibrosis for instance, and people who have cancer and are on chemotherapy would have an unusually low resistance (people such as my mum)... so the way I see it, we should consider these people too when being all gung-ho about it.

You can never remove all the germs from a public environment, but you can cut down on them. Many plastics and paints these days are anti-microbial in as much as they have some form of Silver additive in them. Also, hand sanitizers are no replacement for washing your hands!

Having said that, my option would be "whenever is most convenient", since you wouldn't want to be holding people up.

I disliked riding in buses from a very young age. As I got older, I began to realise that the strangest people rode buses - and there was always someone new or interesting to file away in my catalog of people. The only time I would take a bus now is by choice - and only to the Subway - if I'm ditching my car for some reason on that particular journey.
I wouldn't bother with the sanitizer either coming or going since I happen to have a somewhat miraculous immune system - Nature keeps me strong with ulterior motives; I seem to be her favourite slave.

OTH - if I happen to have just come out of a Hospital, or happen to have handled some bio-hazardous product just before boarding, I most certainly would sanitize my hands as a courtesy to the other passengers.

Also - your comments about 'logical' and 'germaphobe' added to the choices can be sensed as biased and may effect the truth of your poll.

That was actually done purposefully. I had other polls which did not state such. I'm comparing the differences, but the margins between them all are quite slim.
