A weekend with nothing to do DIY project

Hi folks - I figured I would post my weekend project here. Not sure why but a hair wiggled its way up my you know what one weekend. I decided to build a homemade racing cockpit. I made it from 1 inch square tubing and angle. I am far from being a welder but this isnt a bridge so my crappy welds will do. I went to a junk yard and found what looked to be an almost new leather seat out of a BMW 830I. The remote seat motors still worked so I wired them into a small battery charger you can see mounted by my pedals. Even the headrest goes up and down. Heck it even has a seat warmer. :) The seat was drawing about 3 amps so I used a 5 amp charger. It has to be a manual charger (automatic float chargers will not work) Anyway before I started this project I researched a ton of info (some of which was on here) so I figured I would pay back to maybe help someone else thinking about doing this. The wheel is the Logitech G27. For the most part it is adjustable except for the wheel position but having the seat and shifter adjustable is all you need once you get the correct height and spacing. The cost of the metal was about $90 along with 2 cans of auto grade spray paint. The seat was $40 from the yard. I really thought that was a good dal. It was actually $25 and they charged me $15 to pull it. That was well worth it. Other than a wire welder the only thing you need is a couple 90/45 welding magnets from Harbour Freight. If I had to do anything over again I would have created some wire channels to help hide the tone of wires. As it stands now zip ties will have to do. This thing is about as solid as you could hope for. Nothing has play in it from the wheel to the pedals to the shifter. If anyone want my cut list let me know....

As long as it is comfortable... it is fine. I will build mine soon. I don't know however how comfortable it is to play for long hours as your TV is quite high when compared to your racing seat... seems that you have to look upwards all the time, which is not very comfortable... anyway... if you are comfortable... :)

Seat looks to be in very good shape and it's electronics work so that is awesome! 👍

I like the cockpit man. Very nice and not bad at all for a weekend project. I don't like how high the TV is though. Talk about cranking your head.

LCD and Plasma TV's should be at eye level anyways or as close to it as possible for the best possible picture.

Ya, I thought about mounting a 32 inch to the foot end of the frame. The good thing about the frame is that it is solid enough that I believe I could mount about anything to it without weight issues. It's kind of sitting in the LR right now because that is where the PS3 is. The wife was some kind of mad when she saw this :)

hahaha yeah I feel your pain. When my Wife saw mine she didn't take it too well. I ended up mounting a monitor to it and placing the entire rig in the corner of our den...out of the way and out of her direct line of sight lol.

Mounting a 32" screen to that rig would be awesome! I'm looking to pickup a 28" LCD for my cockpit...a 32" would be awesome...
