About Gear Ratios

Hello,

The car I'm currently using is a Mclaren F1. I've fully tuned it to have 860bhp, 81.8kgfm of torque and it weighs 970kg. However I've been having trouble adjusting gear ratios as I'm not very experienced in this area. Basically what happens is when I floor it from standstill the car while rev to the redline and stay there, without changing gear for a very long time (this is in automatic). It does this mainly in 1st and 2nd but also a little in 3rd too. I've heard of the "Tranny Trick" which I think prevents this from happening but I don't fully understand it. I've tried fiddling around with the gear ratios and that hasn't worked either. This is a little frustrating as I've spent roughy 1.3million credits on this car lol. Anyway it would be greatly appreciated if anyone could give me a good idea as to what gear ratios I should have etc. to prevent this from happening.

Thanks!

Maybe you did the Tranny Trick wrong. How GTVault says to do it is the following:

1. Reset gear ratios to default
2. Set Final Drive to max
3. Set Auto (Max Speed in GT5) setting to its maximum, and then to its minimum, and leave it there
4. Set Final Drive depending on track

Maybe you did the third step wrong. When you set it to max, I think you're supposed to press X to set it to that value and then go back and set it to min, not just to from max to min without saving in between. Whatever you're doing, it seems the car is stalling in first gear. Have you tried using a manual? Maybe you geared it too tall. I think limited slip settings may also have to do with it.

I've tried that I think it may be step number 4 I'm doing wrong. What would you recommend be the best Final Gear setting for a generic track like the High Speed Ring?

Go and try it out at whatever you have at the moment. You want the RPM just touching the redline, ( a flashing red light) at the end of the main straight. This will give you the best acceleration and the highest top speed for the longest time. If the the engine starts stuttering, the rev limiter has cut in to save the engine from damage. You need to DECREASE the Final Drive gear a bit and try it again. The main thing is, not to touch the Speed window on the bottom of the page, as that will change all of your gears, and you will have to start the whole thing again.
Cheers, Pete

Not sure. For a track like High Speed Ring, which is, well, a high speed track, you may want a slightly tall final drive, which means you'd set it to the left. It depends on what car you're driving and how fast it can actually reach. For the record, how well is your car doing in terms of acceleration and top speed? For tighter tracks with less long acceleration sections, you may want a shorter final drive.
