So on Saturday night I was watching the V8 Supercar race over Justin.tv on my Acer Aspire One netbook. On commercial breaks I was trying to browse other websites but they kept freezing, so I just finished watching the race. When I clicked off the internet I got some kind of error saying a file was missing. I just ignored it and shut the computer down.

Sunday morning I went to start it up again, and I'm getting a plain black screen that says "Disk Read Error, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart". Doing this just brings me back to the same screen. After some research I learned that during bootup I can press Alt + F10 to get into the recovery mode. However that asks me to insert a CD to complete the process and obviously since it's a netbook it doesn't have one.

What now? It's a $200 computer I bought a couple years ago, so if it's not fixable for free or cheap I'm just going to toss it. (along with everything on it :indiff:)

Sounds like the hard drive had corrupt sectors causing you to lose important system files. If you got a desktop PC you hook the hard drive up to it and see if you can back up your files. Use the program called "Speedfan" to see the smart data on the hard drive(it's a diagnostic system on hard drives and you read it from the "SMART" tab in speedfan). If it says that your hard drive has bad sectors then look up the hard drive's model for the warranty and see if you can get it replaced for free.

So far the netbook sounds like it's reusable.

I wish I had a PC. :(

The netbook is my only computer at home. I don't believe the HDD would have a warranty still, it's over 2 years old.

Some have 3 year warranties(unlikely but even with Western Digital they'll gave you a discount on a new hard drive if you send the bad one to them). See if you can have a friend let you borrow their desktop PC. Otherwise have a Computer Repair business take a look at it. In the end it's up to you if it's worth spending money on a very cheap netbook as any repair could cost as much as you bought it for. So you could very well be better off buying a new laptop and having Best buy recycle your netbook(or even sell it "as-is" on ebay for a cheap price).

Well, I'm not really losing anything but a bunch of photos and some photoshop templates that I hardly use anymore, so if I can't get it going myself I'd rather put the money into a desktop. (which is what I would rather have for PC gaming)

Laptops use OEM haedwarw which has 1 year warranty on them.
You can buy a new hdd and an OEM copy of windows and it will work again.

To give them a bit of credit it has lasted over a couple years of constant use. I've already replaced the power cord twice.

Acer Netbook toast? Take one Acer netbook, plug it in and set it to playing high definition movies.

Butter two slices of toast and put them on a flat tray. Put the netbook on top of them.

I give it 15 minutes for good browning.

Used to be wary of Acer products, but my netbook is some four years old, already. Been used, abused, rained on, rubbered up (don't do burn-outs and donuts beside your netbook), commuted with, dropped, used some 12 hours a day on workdays and as long as the battery would last on trips, and the only problems I had with it were the power cable fraying twice (bought a new brick the first time... simply repaired to cord the second) and the screen ribbon starting to go out (from being opened over a thousand times, dropped a dozen and rained on some twenty or thirty times).

The one precaution you need to take with netbooks is that they're so compact, it pays to have a laptop cooling pad under them.

My HP Pavilion, on the other hand, died within six months. Terminal overheating. A friend got one of those ultra-book style computers from HP a few months ago, and had warranty issues within three. Boo-yah. HP still keeping the status quo.

I'll take two, with jam please.

But seriously, something similar just happened to my friends tower desktop. She got a BSOD either caused by heat or a power supply short, and it has corrupted sectors of her boot drive so boot and shut down are very selective of weather they want to be smooth or not.

Sometimes these things fix themselves. By no means will I attempt to provide you with help, I know little to nothing when it comes to hard drive recovery, but that's more than likey what's caused the issue, as above have explained.

Yeah, it won't play HD movies.

If it was me, i would be googling Hard drive recovery how too's about now lol

Been there, done that. Most people are saying use a recovery disc, and since it doesn't have a CD drive they are saying use an external CD drive, blah, blah. I'm not going to spend any money on this thing anymore (already spent $50 on power cords) so if it's done, it's done.

Correction... It won't play them well. Mine is a 1.6 Ghz model. It can play HD... If you can put up with the stutter, freeze-frame and incredi le slowdown... VLC works... Media Player Classic works better...if you can,get CoreAVC to improve performance.

Errh... After you fix your HDD...

My next question is did you make a set of recovery CD/DVDs?
If you know someone that has a retail copy of the same version of windows you can install it and then use your product key.
Then you will need to download the drivers from acer for your unit.

Another problem, he does not want to invest $30-$50 into buying a USB DVD drive, he has already decided to buy a new laptop.

How much money are you willing to spend? Demanding or casual gaming (maybe list some of your favorite games)?

Well unfortunately nothing at the moment because I don't have any. So it'll be a while.

TAke HDD out, buy new one, insert, get copy of your Win version on a stick as image (that is not illegal), enter your code from the back of your Acer in.
Done!

50-70bucks,

and if you know someone with a sata2usb controller get recuva and get your pics back from the fried HDD.

Every 6 month I have to do this for friends who let their laptop on the couch while playing games or watching movies
