Ads in game

I saw an interesting article about the over indulgence with advertising in GTS...

Just wondered whats your guys opinions on GTS advertising other brands in game, such as the Tag Heuer ads in brand central, and if it's no big deal right now to what extent do you think they'll increase the volume of ads over the life span of the game?

Me personally, I would never buy a brand of something which is either shoved in my face, or just put somewhere that I don't want to see it.

Like within a racing game, I don't want to see a watch brand, I just want to drive.

I don't mind the commercials on billboards at the track itself, I think that'd be interesting if they could charge some sort of commercial fees for virtual advertising on billboards at racetracks.

But just dumping it in brand central, felt somewhat out of place and obnoxious.

I much rather see actual brands on advertisement boards on the side of the track instead of the game itself. I think in GT:Sport it's done quite well but for example in PCARS 2 if feels as if there is a PCARS 2 board every 10 meters. :)

The most annoying track in regards to advertising for me would be hands down highlands from Assetto Corsa though. Yes I understand it's a free DLC track, yes I understand creating such track costs money, but seeing those huge NVIDIA advertising boards ruining an otherwise very immersive Scottish track is really sad IMO.

I always wondered, what's the point advertising your game, within the game itself...

Surely if you are already playing the game, and racing on the tracks, then you've already purchased the game so the advertising of that game is moot isn't it?

What's the benefit of it lol, is it for streamers or something?

and yeah... I'd love to know if these games actually generate advertising revenue for posting another brand in a virtual space in the same way as real life, or commercials on Youtube or whatever.

Presumably, if developers are able to prove that ads within the game itself are an effective source of marketing, then what's the stop then plastering ads across as many areas of virtual space possible in many games?

You happen to have iPhone?

Yes I really like to watch X advertisement on my paid tv channel, I'm paying for channel and then forced to watch those advertisements.. Grin..

I think it's partially just to flesh out the track scenery, and billboards were common around race tracks, and plugging themselves on the billboards is free and easy. I don't think they're really aiming at in-game advertising so much as just creating props to decorate the tracks. Also, they'd be in screenshots and videos, so they're potentially advertising to people seeing these pictures or clips.

It doesn't bother me really. If sponsorship gives PD more money then that will hopefully be used to make a better game.

PD hardly need the money, Sony pay them plenty and on-top of that they have sold millions of games in years gone by, Crap like this needs to stay out of full priced AAA games just the same was as microtransactions.

Well when you really think about it the game in itself is one big ad. The reason that manufacturers would want to cooperate with PD is because their games have an impact on real car sales. And if not the cars, there's a strong sense of lifestyle that they have been trying to sell since day one. Search, buy, drive and in the end identify yourself with brands and/or specific cars. Just take a look at the latest GT intros, which glorifies the industry to the max with artistic camera work and classical music. "It's art, it's life - be apart of it" could've been a proper ad slogan at the end of those sequences.

I prefer to see real brands ads than fake ones. It adds to the realism. I never use fake decal logos on my liveries for instance. Because they're fake and, for the most part, poorly design from a technical point of view.

I doubt any GT game will actually have that big of an impact on real life car sale, I believe that more people like to try to use the virtual counterpart of their real world car due to insurance, fuel, wear etc on the real car which you can bypass by playing it on a game instead, I know everything is a business and its all artistic interpretation and such but there really is no need for adverts for things in a game that people have paid full retail price for.

Being from England I speak with a view that if things are free then sure advertising revenue is needed a la Freeview, But if things are paid they don't require the additional revenue a la BBC1/Tv Licence fee etc. Much like :gtplanet: infact every user that isn't premium sees ads I believe, I don't see why PD should treat everyone a different way to how Jordan does.

I would rather see real sponsors. Fake sponsors are so cheesy. It's not like we have to watch commercials or something like that. I don't see this as an issue in GT sport or in Project Cars 2.

Besides having real sponsors makes the game more immersive. This is especially noted at Watkins Glen in PC2. Drive a lap around there, they have all the sponsors on the track for the real races that run there. It makes me feel like I am really there! It's the same in GT Sport, it makes it feel really real. Can't believe some people have their underpants in knots over this

"Crap like this"??? lolol

You do realise that TAG Hauer have been the official FIA F1 timekeepers since the 1992 right son???

Time keeping today
Time is the main technological challenge facing TAG Heuer, since the performances of the cars, the drivers and the racing teams are measured all at once to the nearest 1/1000th of a second. TAG Heuer's innovative spirit has evolved constantly in this field since 1992, the date when the company was first appointed Official Timekeeper of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. To eliminate any risk of error, TAG Heuer uses two independent timekeeping systems.

Its hilarious to think its simply watch makers advertising.

There are also complete and attractive graphics proposed to world-wide TV viewers to help them understanding the evolution of live practice and race sessions, thanks to the numerous television channels which broadcast live, delayed races or news coverage of the Grands Prix, with the TAG Heuer timing logo appearing on screens.

Whats next?? You want Ferrari to blatantly stop advertising their cars in the GT games???

In Formula 1 motor-racing circles, everyone agreed that Heuer had equipped Ferrari with the finest existing technology. In 1978 in Long Beach (California), Grand Prix organisers appointed 20 local timekeepers for the practice sessions. The result was a nightmare: none of them reached the same result.

Since each team also did its own timekeeping, there were numerous differences between their respective calculations and the official times. The heads of the racing teams therefore decided to appeal to a single benchmark: the reputation of Jean Campiche, timekeeper for the Scuderia Ferrari, and the reliability of the Heuer technology, convinced everybody that the Ferrari statistics were the most accurate and most reliable. The Heuer system became the only reference in racing.

To be honest, I'm shocked to read such drivel on the REAL Driving Simulator site

Yes because that is completely relevant in a game that features precisely zero F1 cars 👍

And it might help to do some research instead of trying to belittle someone when you appear to have zero knowledge of the fact, The official timekeeper is now Rolex and has been for some time, So your point is more than invalid on so many levels, Now get back to the topic.

My personal view is that if it is kept in an immersive way (such as race track billboards etc.) then I don't mind. I do agree that having 'Tag' in the brand central section is a bit annoying. I open that list of things to buy cars, not watch videos about watches and time keeping (I presume that's what it's about, I've not watched it and probably never will).

That said, if that kind of stuff is how they can ensure future DLC is free rather than paid then I'd be down with that

Um.. [A] having a timekeeper with a long history of timing actual races is different kettle of fish than the "some watch brand"

TAG Heuer is an official partner/ sponsor and time keeper to GT Sports.. So explain why they don't deserve to get a mention on Brand Central again?? I may have zero knowledge of the facts, but I can read..

7 months later and "Oh my golly gosh.. There's a watchmaker in Brand Central" colour me shocked. lol

My whole point about my surprise at seeing this thread on GT Planet, is because that's where I first read about the partnership. I may have zero knowledge but have a good memory retention. smh

Can't speak for everyone, but I'm not shocked. Just disappointed I guess.

I don't mind the co-branding, loading screens and things but I guess the difference comes with my interpretation of what Brand Central should be. For me it should be the car dealerships and nothing else like in GT 6. If I want to learn about sponsorship partners, car manufacturers etc. then I'd go in to a 'museum' esque portion of the game and do it.

Seems like placing things like that in those locations is potentially confusing - unless they end up making a VGT car or something daft

I agree, I was really disappointed to see several fake ads on track this year.

Probably the most frustrating is the Nordschleife with way too many advertising boards that not only have fake ads but shouldn't be there
