Advice on gaming monitors

Hi guys! Since I got a new gaming rig a few months back, I've been starting to notice as I read all around the internet that my old 60Hz HP Pavillion 22bw might not be the best for my specs. Basically, I can't play anything above 60fps because it causes a really painful screen tear and stuttering. This forces me to play with V-Sync on all games. With V-Sync deactivated I normally achieve frame rates between 70 and 114 depending on the game.

After reading and learning a bit, I realize I do need a monitor with a refresh rate higher than 60hz. Basically equal or higher than the frame rate my PC is capable of producing. I'm shopping for 144Hz monitors, but I really don't know what the best option is. I don't need 4k or 3D. I settle for 1080p. My budget is no more than $250.

Another thing is the cable I would need to use. I've also read that HDMi is not the right choice and that for higher frames I need a DVI. I am not so sure about how this works, so I need a bit of enlightenment.

Thanks!

I see you have a gtx 970. Try to use the fast option under v-sync. It has less lag than the normal v-sync and works the best when you have more frame than your monitor can handle.

It's a new nvidia tech.

Thanks guys! Ended up getting this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2HH7G0/?tag=gtplanet-20 Found it for $160 today in a Best Buy. There was only one left, hidden behind some Black Friday "door buster" deals. I followed your advice with the cables. Ended up using a Dual Link DVI-D that came with the monitor.

What can I say... I finally know the truth. I have experienced it with my own eyes. You actually CAN see more than 60fps with the right monitor. I was running Dying Light no V-Sync at around 100fps and... simply wow... It's hard to explain, but if I compare with 60fps, there is a very noticeable difference. No Screen tare at all. Not only is it easier to adjust your aim, but the input response seems almost 1:1. It's simply amazing...

I'm really happy with this.
