Okay guys, was on the market for a new gaming rig and luck would have it my parents HDD on their one year old HP Pavilion crapped out.

So now I have it (and they bought a 1TB Seagate 7200RPM which they couldn't get to work).

Specs on this thing are the following:

8GB RAM
1TB Seagate 7200 RPM HDD
2.4X or something processor (the invidia ones they were coming w/ from HP)

So I pulled a few parts from my old build:

Visiontek Radeon 5670 1GB DDR5 card
550W PSU

Now....this computer originally had Vista on it when the HDD went tits up.

So I pulled that, got an OEM store bought Win7 Home Premium and plugged in the 1TB Seagate HDD. Left my vid card off for now as I assume there would be resolution issue trying to get the monitor to display.

So I fire it up and get to the HP screen that says F10 Setup, ESC Boot Menu, F9 Diagnostics, F10 System Recovery. I have the Recovery discs from their computer but no luck there. Every now and then when firing it up (the computer) it recognizes the new HDD. But had it listed as RAID. Since I only have one HDD for this thing, it finally (after many unsuccessful attempts) let me get to the BIOS to change it to IDE.

In BIOS I have Boot Priority 1) CD-ROM 2) HDD 3) etc etc. Most of the time it doesn't recognize the HDD and for the life of me I can't get it to install Win7. Checked all connections (SATA to the Mobo) and they're good. All PSU connections are good and everything is working. Just to make sure the wire was good I threw my old 250GB Western (w/ XP on it) into the mix and it recognized it on the black screen w/ the cursor blinking so I know the wires are good.

Most of the time when I fire up the computer it says "Cannot detect drive, insert boot disc and hit any key or reboot" So I insert Win7 and hit any key and it just keeps displaying the same msg.

I'm lost guys and desperately need help. Plus I have an unplayed Witcher 2 sitting here just looking at me lol. I'm ready to throw this computer through the window.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ETA: Got a little further. I tried installing both HDD's for the heck of it and then disconnecting the battery from the mobo. Then re inserted the battery and fired it up with the Win7 OS disc in. I made it clear to the screen to select which drive I wanted to install the OS on and then it hung up.... :( Now it's doing the same crap it was that I previously posted.

ETA2: Okay I let it sit for a long while, all the while letting it cool off/turned off. Rebooted and now it says Windows is installing....keeping my fingers crossed but not getting my hopes up....

Umm, if it's a SATA disk you dont want it set to IDE. Chances are that before hand there was some kind of raid set up that required adittional drivers. Removing the battery would have cleared all these settings. Good luck. 👍

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my ETA2 was right on.....hung at 0% Expanding files. Apparently that is a common problem. Now the old HDD that was in here had Vista on it....and had a new issue pop up a bit ago when making some more attempts. Win7 disk in, and instead of booting to the install screens....it boots to System Recovery for Vista...

Where is it pulling this data from? There was nothing on this new HDD....

I can't do anything w/ the system recovery either.

If it doesn't detect the HDD sometimes it might lead to a bad HDD. I would try another HDD because the one you got could be DOA. If you got a spare external HDD then you can install Win 7 over USB and see if you get different results.

Well I tried installing and letting it do its thing over night....no luck. Woke up this morning and still hung at 0% Expanding Files. Gonna try to see if there are some options in the BIOS for an energy saving selection on the DVD drive to turn off. Some say this causes some conflict...other have tried other things in the BIOS to get it to stop hanging. Not giving up yet. But may ultimately just buy a new MOBO and HDD and call it a day. And maybe get a SSD while I'm at it bwahaha (Dr. Evil laugh)...but that will cut into my Obutto Ozone/Fanatec GT2 wheel w/ CSP's....
