AIs slow down on last couple of laps?

I noticed a curious thing while playing longer career races, for example, 10 minutes ones. Last one I played, I was in a severely underpowered car on Willow Springs, managed to get the 3rd place, and then got stuck there. The gap was about 11 seconds give or take, shortening and widening through the splits, but I wasn't gaining ground at all for 3 laps. Then, on the second to last lap the gap comes down to 3 seconds, and I wasn't driving any faster. On the last lap I overtake both of the leaders and cost to victory.

The hell is that?

I noticed something similar to this earlier, but on that particular race it was much more obvious because I could see half a track in front of me. AIs weren't having any accidents, leaving the track, nothing. They just slowed down enough to let me through.

Would be great to hear from other people if this is the case across the board or it was just me getting (un)lucky.

EDIT:
Just thought of checking the timings in the replay. Yep, two leaders were 10 seconds slower on the second to last lap than on the previous one. Not in a single sector either, 3-4 seconds on each of the three sectors. They sped up again on the last lap, but were still good 5 seconds slower than their best laps.

This is absolute ********. Not only have I had to tune my car way under the specifications to get some challenge out of the races, now it turns out that the AI will still roll over if I can't win "fair". I can't get my head around it.

Rubber banding it's commonly known as.
If your in front they will speed up. When your behind they slow down for you.

I had it in the FGT championship in GT5. Many other games have used this in the past although it's becoming more uncommon.

Yes they seem to do that in many races. I was 10 seconds down at the start of the last lap at Brand's Hatch and I miraculously won, in a stock Hyundai Genesis against M3 level cars including the CSL and GT. Many of the early races especially feel like they AI let's you win.

Well, I am used to it being present in arcade titles, but GT positions itself as a sim and this... I don't know, I'm more disappointed than anything. Coming over from Forza I was used to AI being passable and at the very least racing as good as it can on harder difficulty levels, leaving you in the dust should you make a mistake.

I guess I'll continue to grind career just to buy cars for online races. Shame.

I just did a National A race at Silverstone. 3 laps

I was driving a stock Renault Clio RS (from prize) on comfort soft tyres and I won the race, the lead car was over 10 seconds ahead at the start of the 3rd lap, and I still caught him. This is hilarious, these are monster cars that I'm beating in a ****** little hothatch.

It is indeed unfortunate but seems the only way to handle the rolling start situation. Until standing starts are present this is the only way to go I think.

I read that the PS3 can't handle 16 premium cars on a standing start because of framerate issues. It's as though one issue leads to another.
