Alonso leaves McLaren

I'm sure he'll end up back at Renault. But I'm much more interested in who'll take his spot at Mclaren.

I've heard Renault is not Fernando's first choice because of the French team's lack of pace during this season. Then again, if not Renault, then what? Williams, Red Bull and little else, innit?

A Heikki/Fernando team would be nice... unless of course Heikki starts outpacing him, and then wel'll get Renault as the centre of all the is evil and Heikki and Flavio as the two horsemen of apocalypse, out go behead poor Fernando, a driver who is only humbly trying to get by.

Brilliant!

Mmmh... I know a not very talented driver who is now without job. He is the brother of a very talented driver who retired in 2006. I don't post his name, because otherwise my head will explode!11111

I also think this will happen.

Didn't know Robert Doornbos had a brother...

God don't put him in a team with another rookie, we'll never hear the end of it... If this whole claus for letting Alonso go is true, in which he's only allowed to join a minor team, I can't see him going any higher than Williams (which includes BMW Sauber and Renault) anyway

There's a story circulating that he cannot sign for a factory-backed team - meaning he can't go any higher than Red Bull...

Lets get that out of the way. Alonso is leaving!!!!! Damn, he would be excellent driving in a top team next year if he want a shot at the title. Now, it just seems Alonso doesn't have a chance being in a top team anymore. With Ferrari and BMW full next season, only time time would tell where is he going. He may join teams such as:
  • Renault
  • Red Bull Racing
  • Williams
  • Honda
  • Toyota
  • or Prodrive (if they are confirmed to race next year)

There is definitely a lot of choices on where he would be next year, but its very unlikely he would be competitive (unless those teams pull of a miracle) but i guess Alonso would mind it now he's away from Hamilton. As for McLaren, odds are Ron Dennis is trying to get Nico Rosberg the seat for next year. It would be that dream team that McLaren always tried to make. But then again, there are many talents from GP2 as well. Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi could be favorites as well as the others, maybe even Bruno Senna (but that is highly unlikely :scared:) so it could be very exciting to watch the newcomers in the team. Heck, they may even outpace Lewis Hamilton in their first race! 👍

In 2006 Fernando was doing Renault Megane commercials, last year Mercedes C-class. I wonder if we'll see him chugging a Red Bull by March.

If this "no factory team" thing is true, then does it mean that he will be fighting in the mid-pack for the next 2 seasons? I don't know about everyone else but to me that's not right.

Spoken too soon...

Alonso 'free to sign for any team'

Alonso to Red Bull and Webber to Renault, prehaps?

One things's for sure - the driver market will get extremely busy of the weekend.

He's leaving the most dominant team from last year for what? Because his ego is just too big. He won't be able to overcome a lesser car unless the team he drives for makes some major jumps in performance. He clearly feels the need to be a true number one driver with most of the team's resources devoted to him. His best chance to be immortal was at McLaren, since Ferrari is NOT going to take him on. He should've just swallowed his pride and stayed. I don't see him winning another title in the near future. Is March here yet???!!! I can't wait to see where he goes!!!

I think rosberg will go to mclaren. I cant see alonso going to reno with heikki he would be afraid he'd beat him

I think McLaren wanted to get rid of him just as much as he wanted to leave, maybe even more since they have Lewis.

"I have some idea of what I want to do, a plan or a hope," he told Spain's Telecinco at the weekend. "I know what I'd like to do next year but I don't know if it's possible."

I guess this leaves him with the truly logical choice..... NASCAR!:dopey:

aaaauuuuugggghhhh! Nooooooo! Just Joking.:scared:

My prediction for next year's race drivers after this news:

McLaren-Mercedes: Hamilton & Rosberg (British-German pair up is no coincidence)
Renault: Kovalainen & Piquet Jr (Fisi gone)
WilliamsF1: Alonso & Sutil
Red Bull: Coultard & Webber (unchanged)

I'd interpret that as him wanting to go to Ferrari.

With Fernando's nice comments about Kimi after Brazil, Montezemolo's comments about Fernando and all the rumours about Massa's contract.

I wouldn't count out the possibility completely.

Next year's lineup

Ferrari: Kimi - Alonso
McLaren: Lewis - Nico
BMW: Heidfeld - Kubica
Renault: Kovalainen - MASSA :dopey:
Williams: Ralfie Schu - Liuzzi :nervous:

^^^
I don't see Alonso going anywhere that he is not the undisputed number 1 driver period.

I think Alonso has fair respect for Kimi Raikkonen, since they came into the sport at the same time, dueled for the championship in 2005, and Kimi has had to deal with plenty of media criticism throughout his career. For these reasons, I don't think that a Raikkonen/Alonso pairing would turn to shreds like Alonso/Hamilton did this year. They might not become BFFs, but they could probably maintain a working relationship.

Ralf should go to McLaren, he is the 3rd fastest driver in the sport after all.

Every article even mentioning the possibility of Alonso finding his way to Ferrari, regardless of what year it takes place, makes me shudder with revulsion. I know we can't express a desire to see a driver be injured, does that extend to people like Montezemolo?

Who knows, maybe Alonso will rediscover some of the humility he had at Minardi when he finds himself back in the midfield, but more likely I think he'll just put in comparatively strong performances and generally complain a lot. The concept of he and Trulli together at Toyota is a laugh - the Renault Reunion at +2s a lap.

Come right this way Nico, straight to the Silver Arrows :sly:

Jokes aside, that'd be pretty cool and I reckon they'd get along just fine. My predictions for the team line ups...

F - Kimi & Massa
M - Hamilton & Rosberg
R - Kovalienen and Piquet Jr (Sod off Fisi)
BMW - Heidfeld & Kubica
RBR - Webber & Coulthard
W - Sutil & Alonso

And the other teams I just don't care about enough to make a line up.
