Alpina can look back on a long and successful history in international motorsport. Well-known F1 and Touring Car drivers such as Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx, Hans Stuck and Dieter Quester gripped an Alpina steering wheel on their way to winning three European Touring Car Championships. Alpina pilots also won the Nürburgring 24 Hours numerous times, as well as the 24 Hours of Spa in 1970.
The idea of going racing with street-based dream cars has proven to be a great success for drivers, spectators and manufacturers alike. With this involvement in racing, Alpina will be able to raise awareness of the Alpina brand, especially in markets new to Alpina. With ten distinguished automotive marques, the GT3 Championship is the Crème de la Crème, and with starting grids of 45 cars in the European Championship and multiple national championships, quite compelling.
The B6 GT3 (2009 version) has always been fast, but the combination of high torque and vehicle weight often resulted in a disproportionate amount of tyre wear, so that top positions were lost in the final phase of the races. In order to stay competitive, especially against all the mid-engine concepts, a significant weight reduction and an improved weight distribution was needed.
By 2011, two years later, the Liqui-Molly Team Engstler and the B6 GT3 Evo 2011 took the Championship title with drivers Margaritis and Lunadari. The B6 GT3 proved to be a recipe for success.
The B6 GT3 Evo 2011 is equipped with equally powerful 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine (530 hp). The new engine in addition to the omission of the compressor and the inter cooler resulted in a weight reduction of 70 kg on the front axle, while at the same time the fuel consumption is reduced by approximately 15 percent.
The new naturally aspirated engine is derived from a well proven BMW race engine
from the American GrandAm race series, with which the racing team from Chip
Ganassi was able to reach a double-victory at the 24h Race of Daytona. In contrast to the GrandAm race series, the regulations of which stipulate a rpm limit of 7000 rpm for that engine, the engine in the B6 GT3 Evo 2011 can unfold without a rev limiter.
