Am I handicapped or what...?

Hey,

I was watching a japanese racing video and it showed a little window with the guys' feet on the pedals and when they entered corners they would heel-toe shift.

Well... after seeing this example I went and sat in my car and tried to get the footing right, but it seems because my toes point outwards so far that braking with my toe and accelerating with my heel was a little impossible. However, I found I could brake with my heel and accel with my toe.

Then I drove around my area for a while trying it while moving. I'm no master at it yet, but it worked and I managed to keep my revs up while downshifting so I thought I might come back here and ask.

Am I alone on this one?

(btw I seem to recall hearing a term called Reverse Heel-Toe Shifting... could be wrong though)

:dunce:

Heel- toeing requires a great deal of practice to perform correctly. It is also not easily practiced on the street (or with the car parked ;) ), since you must brake hard in order to get your foot positioned correctly.

Depending on the pedal setup of your car, it might be almost impossible. Some cars are very hard to heel-toe in.

Nope not alone, not handicapped either.....Just practice. You'll get it. Remember that the vid you watched was done by professional drivers, I'm sure they felt the same way when they first started too.

yeah i have the exact same problem my freind. my foot size is far too large for the amount of room in my car, and not only that but since the car i drive (03 sunfire:rolleyes: ) the gas pedal is placed farther in than the brake pedal, i also have to use the heel on the brake/toe on the gas method.
i think if the pedals are all equally level, and perhaps closer together, heel toe would be possible despite shoe size.
i found another thing that helps is buying thinner shoes as well. previously i used my fat nadia skate shoes, i bought a pair of thin canvas sneakers with a light sole, and it allows for smoother shifting and feel of the clutch, plus more room for heel/toe manouvers.
but i think at the end, pedal level is the main factor.

isn't your toe should be on the brake pedal and then the heel on gas?

It doesn't matter what part of the foot is doing it, the only thing that matters is how far the pedals are moved.

Personally, I use the edges of my foot without twisting my knee around at all. I found it to be the most comfortable way. Just do whatever feels natural.

Er. In the real world, not bothering to think about what you do on the road and rely on instinct is what causes accidents...

Oh, and for the record, it was 2 hachi roku versus a Skyline. Not drifting. Skyline came in last cuz the guy driving was a total bungmunch.

i got that video.. i think its just because the 2 drivers were tsuchiya and orido

It's been a while since I've seen that video, but I will say this: even when you're pushing a car, a skillful driver might not appear to be driving all that hard.

He had proper shifting technique, but look at his lines. The are so off. Thats what I mean when I say he drives like my mom. Fast and erratic. She also swears alot.

it was quite even in my opinion considering that tsuchiya had his own ae86 on the line along with orido's boss 86, both track tuned against a stock r34? even i'd say

I think that's a good buy, as long as everything is in order. You could always swap in another engine, SR20:D ;)

Yeah, here we go...from Edmunds.com:

With the 1988 redesign, the rear-drive Corolla coupe and Liftback were replaced with a new front-drive coupe. While enthusiasts wept, the new Corolla coupe and Corolla GT-S were in fact significantly more refined and capable than the rear-drivers they replaced. They just weren't as much fun.

Oh, I didn't realize they were switched to FF in 88'. I know the 4AGE would be an easier swap, but I own a 91' 240SX (usdm), so I'm a little biased toward the SR20DET. Although, I do have a certain fondness for the little 16 valve, since I also own a 91' VW Jetta GLI with a 2.0L 16V, and it has alot of pep in the mid to upper rev range. I know they are not the same engine, but they are simililiar in type, so I think a comparison of the two is valid.;)
