Analog Stick question

Hi guys, I used to lurk here a while back before life took over. Anyways, I just got the GT4 game. The first thing I did was go into the control setup menu to change the controls to what I grew up using :

Left Analog - Steer
Right Analog up - shift up
Right Analog down - shift down
R2 - acc
L2 - Brake

The rest I left as is.

But WTF!!! The stupid game won't let me set the right analog stick to shift. I can set the right analog to steer and the left analog to shift - but not the other way around.

This is the way I learned GT3. I tried the default settings , but it completely throws me off. I instinctly snap the right analog stick to shift and I end up slamming into a wall.

Is my game defective or does GT4 not have my fav control setting?

Ehhh, I even didn't know GT4 allows you to shift with a stick...

But your configuration is hard to use IMO... I just go with the stock setup, except now I've got a DFP :D

Which is hard to get used to :grumpy:

WHOA!!! That is one weird setup, but whatever floats your boat. Maybe you you need to get used to the normal setup instead.

Well, I don't know how weird it is, but if you play Need for speed most wanted on Xbox 360, my setup is the default for manual transmission.

If one of you guys won't mind, can you please check if my setup is doable? If not then I know I don't have a defective game.

I used to use the left stick to steer, buttons for gas and brake. I'm a automatic driver. :P

Just this week, I adopted my buddy's configuration: Left stick to steer, but gas and brake with the right stick, instead of buttons. It has worked marvelously, so far.

That's what I always did with the DS2 - left stick steer, right stick gas/brake, and shift with the shoulder buttons.

Yeah, the friend I got that from, he likes stick also, so exactly the same configuration as yours. What can I say, I'm a slow learner. :sly:

What would make an interesting poll is to see what percentage of GT racers use automatic. I would think I'd be in the minority.

Edit: I did find the poll. I am in the minority.

I first started out doing that, but you can't heel/toe in the game then, but you're either acc or braking. You can't stab the trottle mid while braking when cornering.

I'll see if I can configure it the way you wanted right now....just give me a sec

**EDIT**: Nope It cannot be done. I just checked for ya ;)

Ciao!

Why do you need to heel/toe when there is no clutch? Gran Turismo manual shifting is like a sport-shift automatic.

I meant the stabbing of the throttle (acc) when braking and cornering to keep the revs up for a faster exit speed.

In this game, without a clutch, the only thing that will do is partially negate your braking and possibly end up initiating some oversteer, which rarely gives you a faster exit speed.

I think the reference was for left-foot braking. You can emulate left-foot braking with the X & square buttons, but not with the analogue sticks.

man everybody uses weird setups. im still using the same setup ive been using ever since i learned to play ps1. the regular d pad steer, button gas and brake, l2 r2 shift. the only thing i changed was handbrake because i use it ALOT in drift so putting it for r1 makes for easy access.

If i drive something rear drive then i use the left to steer and the X and [] to accelerate and brake, but if im in a FF or AWD then i just use the stick.

I feel the benefit from left foot braking in rear drives because it shifts the weight over the steering wheels without losing much speed. I just feel it gives a bit better control.

AND unlike ps1 you can actual control your speed with the X buttons now which is fantastic. No longer is it simply on and off.

The use of right stick to shift sounds interesting though, but i dont see the use if GT4 doesnt have a clutch system (which it doesnt). Assuming it did though, and you could adjust the amount of clutch you want to engage, i would probably using that setup.. GT5 maybe?

The weird thing is , I'm not proposing anything new. GT3 ALREADY HAD this setup.... I don't know why they took it out. It was so much easier for me to shift the way I'm used to.

Your setup seems to make sense if you get used to it, but I personally use the left stick to steer, right stick for gas break since the force recognition on my DS2 is gone :grumpy:, and L2/R2 for shifting. Works like a charm :sly:

Yep, that's the one I use. What irritates me though is the sensitivity of the analogue sticks - at times they're as bad as using the buttons! I'm almost tempted to get a wheel setup. Hopefully they give you a bit finer control. I find that some of the cars in GT4 are monsters on a DS2 (although it could just be me... Actually it probably is me.:dunce::ouch:)

Quite honestly, using the right analog stick to shift seems like quite a good idea. I, however, never use the right analog stick in any racing games. Perhaps I will try to set the left analog stick to shift. Hmm...

Aren't the L2 R2 buttons for acceleration and braking not pressure sensitive? I would find it hard racing 100 or 0% acceleration all the time. Did you use driving aids to help you in GT3?

The DFP is great but it still has it's flaws, much like cars being monsters with a DS2. Very tight corners like amalfia are very slow to take with a dfp for me. Tight low speed chicanes like Côte d'Azur(copy/paste to the rescue) can be taxing to take well. LMP cars were always hard for me but I eventually got decent, laps are probably still a bit slower than DS2 on some tracks. Throttle control is great but when you have to turn the wheel very fast you won't be driving as fast as a DS2.

It might get better if you have a real nice table in the perfect position but this is how it is for me using a table just as big as the wheel and a little bit short. I can't but a lot of muscle into turing because the wheel would come off the ground. Still, driving is a lot more fun with it.

Road cars, especially road cars on N2s are just as fast or faster because of the smoothness.

pretty sure they are supposed to be 4am though, i'm not verifying.

All of the buttons on the Dual Shock 2 are pressure sensitive (except, obviously, start and Select). I can't use the PS1 pad with GT4 or 3, but the Dual Shock 2 is fine.
